| | ikki505 Jan, 2020 23:56(Edited 13 Jan, 2020 14:30) FAQ Do I have to do anything special to participate? No – all you need to do is earn the achievement, and you’re in! The Leaderboard is updated only once a week, so don’t worry if your score doesn’t take any new points into effect right away. Can I play in Softcore? Only Hardcore wins will be counted this year. Make sure that if you’re going after the AotW, that your emulator is set to Hardcore Mode. What are some guidelines for achievement selection? -Try to keep the time to earn the achievement in mind. Achievements that can be earned within 2-3 hours are preferred, though exceptions can always be made depending on the difficulty and learning curve of the game. -Anything brutally difficult might be better suited for TBA2020. -At the same time, ridiculously easy or meme games/achievements are best avoided. -"Beat the game" achievements may be acceptable if the game is short enough - if it's a longer game where trying to rush through it in a week might detract from the experience, it may be better suited for an Achievement of the Month. Will there be catchup weeks this year? There aren’t any catch-up events planned for this year, but Achievements of the Month are re-introduced this year to allow for some extra points to earn here and there. Will passwords/level select/etc. be allowed? Typically, anything the achievement developer allows in their achievement code, will be allowed here. However, there is no short answer to this – whether passwords are allowed or not will be judged on a case by case basis, depending on the achievement chosen and the difficulty and length of the game. Where applicable, whether or not passwords are allowed will be stated in the weekly announcement on Discord. In games with a save system, using a downloaded save file isn't allowed (unless specified) - you will need to use your own save file. When such achievements are picked, we will usually check to see if other progression achievements were earned, including their timestamps. Do I need to join Discord to participate? No, but it is highly recommended. Your points will still be counted even if you don’t have a Discord account, but since achievement selection takes place in the Discord server, you will miss out on voting for the new game each week. It’s also much easier to keep up to date on events that are taking place throughout the year, such as themed weeks. Can games/achievements be changed mid-week? Typically, no – what you get, you’re stuck with for the week. The only occasion where an achievement would be changed mid-week would be if the achievement code, or the code for the set, is broken or poorly coded, to the extent it needs a complete re-work. Can a set receive a revision while the game is being featured in the AotW? No. Revisions can be planned and voted on, but they cannot be put into effect until at least the end of the week, when that game is no longer featured in the AotW. Exceptions may be made for things such as adding save protection, though this is typically put in place before the contest starts or within the first few hours. I missed earning it by X minutes, does it still count? 9:00pm AST/ADT on Sunday evening is the deadline. The old achievement is considered retired the moment the new achievement goes live on the site. Please keep the end date and time in mind, and plan accordingly - try not to leave things until the last minute. In the case of missed time due to situations beyond your control (computer/network problems, emergencies, etc.), let ikki5 or Flara know. We may be willing to make an occasional exception in such circumstances, such as allowing a "re-do" of the missed achievement. Keep in mind that this isn't to be abused. If we see evidence of this sort of thing being abused, we may no longer allow exceptions for any reason. Will there be seasonal events? This is in the works. We may have up to two seasonal events taking place this year, which may or may not involve badges. Seasonal events will be announced in separate forum threads when the time comes. |

 | EverElsewhere18 Jan, 2020 02:50 Man, I was looking forward to doing all the cheevos of the week this year, but Pokemon Naranja has totally killed my interest now. I've always avoided rom hacks assuming they would be unpolished and glitchy, and this game has confirmed my fears! I'd gotten as far as the Mikan Gym but then decided to go exploring elsewhere before fighting Sissy to level up, and then for no reason the game refused to let me go back into the water to return to Mikan. Sissy then appeared at another Gym and I beat her there but no achievement popped. I've no idea where Kumquat Island is as the emulator crashes every time I try to look at the map! Anyone else think that rom hacks shouldn't be eligible for AotW? |

 | Shmelyoff18 Jan, 2020 03:05 I have not an opinion about rom hacks and AotW. But I want to tell you that some hacks are more polished than the original game. For example in  Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow Alter (Game Boy Advance) Hack all bugs and in-game glitches have been fixed. There are many other quality hacks like  Rockman 4: Minus Infinity (NES) Hack or  Castlevania: The Holy Relics (NES) Hack etc. So it all depends on the specific case. |

The challenge of AotW should come from the achievement itself, not from battling with the big messy glitches of games that have never been professionally playtested and released. I agree, maybe there should be an updated thread on RA that keeps a list of rom hacks considered to be at a really professional level... Shmelyoff, looks like you've started the list off! I didn't mean to sound so snobbish about rom hacks, I'm sure there are polished ones out there like you mention. I'm just salty because I'm falling off the AotW bandwagon on week 2 goddammit! |

Personally i voted it because i knew it would be a trainwreck and i'm so glad i did. This has been the best aotw by far in terms of entertainment tbh and i couldn't be happier that this awful dumpster fire of a game actually got picked. Obviously if we could have had a good game like  Crystal Clear (Game Boy Color) Hack or  Pokemon Prism Version (Game Boy Color) Hack instead for our aotw pokemon hack that would be better but i'd rather have a complete mess of a game that's entertaining than a boring nes platformer. I'm just upset that this is probably the last hack content we will probably see in aotw because i doubt ikki and flara will let this happen again.I've always avoided rom hacks assuming they would be unpolished and glitchy, and this game has confirmed my fears! don't assume that all hacks are as bad as naranja. There are plenty of good hacks out there that are just as good if not better than the original game. Naranja was just an awful choice if you were going into it expecting an actual video game like most people. |
| | Blazekickn18 Jan, 2020 04:11(Edited 18 Jan, 2020 04:14) at least the aotw isn't that long. It's basically open world so just grind lapras to around level 25 and use the route below provided by ViperZang to get to the aotw gym. I recommend catching 5 teddiursa for free pickup items while you grind, it'll help give you rare candies as well as items to sell for the money cheeve  Then you can continue to explore buggy hoenn and get the rest of the cheeves if you want. just remember to go to charizard valley for cut charizard before getting the 4th badge because he dissapears when may gives you go-goggles for some reason. Also you might have to reset your save to fight drake because he thinks you fought him already if you have all the badges. |

Objective
The Achievement of the Week (AotW) contest, as the name suggests, is held on a weekly basis. One achievement is chosen, and players aim to earn that achievement during the week of the contest. All you need to do is earn the featured achievement during that week, and you’ll be added to the leaderboard at the end of the week.
In addition, an achievement will be chosen the first Sunday of each month. Typically, these “Achievements of the Month” will be ones that take longer to earn, chosen f r o m games where it’s not practical to rush through the entire thing in a week – where doing so may detract f r o m the enjoyment of the gameplay, game world or the story. “Achievements of the Month” may include such things as late-game achievements in RPGs, challenging achievements in longer games, or “completionist” achievements.
Which achievement do I have to earn?
The chosen Achievement of the Week will be displayed on the site’s home page.
The Achievement of the Month will be announced here in this forum thread each month.
Both achievements will be listed at the top of this post.
Scoring
1 point is earned on the AotW Leaderboard each week if you earn the achievement in Hardcore mode.
1 point is earned for each Achievement of the Month you earn (in Hardcore).
The maximum number of points you can earn throughout the entire year is 52 weeks + 12 months = 64 total points.
Rewards
-Year-End Awards: Awards will be given to players who have earned a certain amount of points on the Leaderboard by the end of 2020. There will be four tiers for this award:
🏆Champion’s Tier: 64 points
🥇Gold Tier: 48-63 points
🥈Silver Tier: 32-47 points
🥉Bronze Tier: 16-31 points points
-Achievement of the Month Award: An award will be given to players who earn all 12 Achievements of the Month.
-All users who complete the AotW (on Hardcore) will get a coloured role in the Discord server for that week, as well as access to a private "winners" channel.
Schedule
AotW 2020 will run f r o m Sunday, January 5, 2020, until Sunday, January 3, 2021.
The contest will begin weekly at 9:00pm AST (Atlantic Standard Time) or ADT (Atlantic Daylight Time), depending on whether Daylight Saving Time is in effect. DST will come into effect this year on Sunday, March 8 and stay in effect until Sunday, November 1.
Currently, weekly contests start on Sunday evenings at 9:00pm AST (1:00am Monday mornings GMT/server time).

On Monday evenings, five games will be chosen at random and a poll will be created in the #achievement-of-the-week channel on the Discord server. The poll will run until the following Sunday evening at approximately 5:00pm AST/ADT. Vote counts will remain hidden until the results are revealed.
Once the game is revealed, discussion will take place on an appropriate achievement for the week. The new achievement will go live at 9:00pm AST/ADT.
Reroll
A “reroll” option will be available this year. Sometimes you might just end up with a terrible batch of games in the vote and want something else. Each week, a second poll will be created where players can vote in favour of or against a reroll. This poll will run for approximately 36 hours.
However, there will be a limit on its use. We are allowing a maximum of 15 rerolls for the entire year, so think carefully before you vote for a new batch of games! Once 15 (positive) rerolls have been spent, the option will no longer be available for the rest of the year.
