I'm not sure if it was the very first game I played, but it's the first memory that's vivid. As a child, I struggled with bronchitis, which meant I had to stay home more than other kids. Since we lived on an old farm, with not many kids nearby, my parents got me a yellow Gameboy Color with Pokemon Red. I was beyond excited to play it, and my first Pokémon was, of course, Bulbasaur. He's still the best boy.

I was 7 at the time, English was not my main language, so I got lost a lot. My parents would help with translations when I got really stuck, but it also motivated me to start learning English. I skipped the whole Game Corner Rocket section in my first playthrough because I didn't even know it existed, instead, I had learned what the Poké Doll did and used that to skip Lavender Tower. Thinking that was the intended way until I played Pokémon Yellow a few years later.

I struggled a lot with the Elite Four. My team consisted of Venusaur, Graveler, and Scyther, with only Venusaur being at a decent level. Agatha's Gengars completely walled me. After a ton of losses, I finally realized I needed to grind more levels and round out my team. So, I picked up Zapdos, Lapras, and Hitmonchan and trained them to be on par with Venusaur. That made all the difference, and I finally beat the game!

Those early gaming years are really special to me. They didn't just spark my love for games, they also pushed me to learn English. It was fun when I started learning English in school and got points taken because they wanted British English and all my English was from American shows and games.

It's hard to pin down my very first gaming memory, at one point I remember sneaking into my brothers room to play the original gothic, and being absolutely terrible at it. I also remember doing that when he bought Morrowind the next year and some point with a few GTA games, all games I was definitely too young for. Perhaps earlier than that my parents had bought me a game boy color (blue) to keep me entertained and I had of course the tetris that came with it and Pokemon Blue along with a few others. Pokemon felt so huge as a kid and instantly became my favorite of course, probably because I didn't have easy access to guides on the internet at the time so it was all a mystery to me and I never had a huge library of games at my disposal. My brother had red version so we would trade each others exclusives and battle each other via link cable. That's probably where I got addicted to gaming, a little farther down the road I would go to a military afterschool program where they had a row of computers with "educational" video games, you would have to sign up for your slot time to play and I would be on one as much as possible playing windows games like the incredible machine and ski tycoon.

- My Review of Super Mario Movie (1993) Spoilers!: Prior to this viewing my only knowledge of the “New York: Documentary” movie was images of the ridiculously tiny headed koopa troopas and how much the actors really wanted this movie to die in obscurity. So going into it I was expecting a lot of cheese and fun 90’s style B-movie wackiness, boy was I not disappointed at all.
The movie delivered amazingly on terribly funny dialogue, ridiculous cyberpunk-esque sets, and nonsensical story telling. Visually, I can see why some Mario fans really hated the direction they went, diverging away from the bright and colorful fantasy Mushroom Kingdom we see brought to life in the modern Mario movie (Completely inferior to this masterpiece) and instead creating a post-apocalyptic and dark cityscape you would expect to find in a Cyberpunk 2077 game, except with a lot more fungus. Puzzling direction aside, however, the creativity and boldness of the sets really was exciting to watch on screen and I can appreciate the amount of detail they put into it.
My major complaint about the movie (Because I generally love campy 90s movies) was how much it jumped around between sets with seemingly no explanation. For example, maybe I need to watch it again to see how it happened but the transition from the escape to the ending battle I looked away for a second and somehow all the characters went from being in King Koopa’s tower to all together on the street set. I understand that the city is supposed to be small and cramped, but it still felt a bit jarring at times. Maybe the characters were making full use of those green tunnels during transition. Other than that, the biggest crime of the movie for me was the fact that King Koopa never got to eat that delicious Koopa special pizza he ordered before he turned into a pile of green slime. All in all, the movie got a 2,000 Koopa Coins/10 from me, see you later alligator!

I can imagine seeing this when only FF7 existed must've been so exciting seeing almost all of your favourite characters in full beautiful animation partaking in amazing fight scenes, the plot being if your too sad you'll die just keeps making this world one of the worst to live in cause it's always something horrible going on, I would've been fine just dealing with Sephiroths kids since they didn't all get the most character development instead of Sephiroth showing up but i'll take it, the movie still gives the best line in fiction "Where can I buy a cellphone" So it all makes up for it!

Definitely going to enjoy the rest of the pizza too.

My avatar is Kakihara, a notoriously violent Japanese Yakuza. He is completely psychotic, to the point where if he met Crash, I don't think he'd hurt him. I think he'd erupt into uncontrollable laughter and they would have quite an interesting day together, with Kakihara treating Crash to various types of sushi and Crash showing Kakihara various gems, crystals, Wumpa etc. At some point I imagine Kakihara would grow bored and would perhaps look to hurt Crash, but Crash would have no issues here. A quick spin and he'd send Kakihara straight back to Japan!

Honestly, I totally understand why this movie received and continues to receive so much stick. It's so weird. I don't know why someone thought a weird cyberpunk type setting was appropriate for Super Mario but here we are. Nevertheless, I watched this film a lot when I was a kid and I always really enjoyed it. The whole parallel universe stuff beyond the wall and just the general...weirdness of the movie continues to influence my taste today. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a good movie, but I enjoyed it for what it is and felt it brought some really interesting ideas to the table.
