Allowed cars for Car challenge achievements - this list was mostly for dev/scripting purposes, but still good enough to validate exact cars allowed for the achievements.

Stick to SET A in your CAR SETUPS! An exploit was around that allowed you to bypass setup limitations just by sticking to SET B or C, the achievements will not work with B and C for now. It's possible to make it work with B and C, but due to how my code is currently structured and with plans to rewrite it so I can reuse said code for subset - I applied effortless Set A limitation instead. I apologize for inconvenience. No longer an issue since JUN 7 2024

I want to express gratitude to people at Gran Turismo modding discord for helpful commentary and some of the suggestions. I also want to personally thank Diatosta for testing early batch of achievements in unofficial mode and sending me valuable bug reports.

-- Things to consider --
. This achievement set works on PAL and NTSC versions, or SCES-51719 and SCUS-97328 respectively.
. To quote tcrf.net: "In the US version of the game, under certain circumstances, if the first Driving Mission (The Pass: Deep Forest) was not completed first, the mission may not be marked as complete no matter if the event has been finished or not, preventing the player from getting the DMC DeLorean S2 '04 (awarded for completing all The Pass Driving Missions) and 100% completion of the game."
. NTSC version plays smoother and you probably can achieve the most crisp graphics with it because of in-game Full HD output support. While PAL version has 5 languages and can import GT4 Prologue save. PAL still looks good with hardware rendering at 3x resolution.
. I mostly developed and tested the set on PAL version, afterwards I noticed that NTSC version has some duplicated cars only present in the US, so I had to edit the Car challenges abit. There is a low risk that car challenges may have oversights and not unlock for certain expected cars.
. When achievement says "in one sitting" I mean - do not reset the game or emulator.
. Dodge RAM truck and Chaparral 2J have broken A-Spec point calculation and are banned from A-Spec related achievements for regular events. I didn't want to mention it constantly so it's not mentioned in most descriptions.
. Car challenges that ask you to win in a road (!) car also allow cars from Tuner dealerships. I consider them heavily tuned road cars.
. If achievement asks you to win the event in championship mode - you have to do exactly that. If you have enough championship points, you can enter the race and exit it to skip to the next one or final results if you wish.
. In championship mode, you're allowed to exit into GT Mode main menu. This doesn't abort the championship, you can save your game and do minor things like visiting GT Auto, all while you're in a state of being in championship. If you restart the game and go back into the 1st race of the championship while in this state, you can still get the achievement. If you restart the game and go back into other races of championship - you won't get the achievement.
. In championship mode, do not ever pick B-Spec mode or switch to it if you're going for Pit Stop - this will nullify your attempt to get relevant achievement.
. In any other race, starting in B-Spec mode but finishing in A-Spec mode will award you 0 A-Spec points.
. The leaderboard indicator for Time Trial achievements will appear to be stuck, it's because it relies on "Last Lap" value, and this value may be invalid when you start. So don't pay attention to this and focus on setting good times.
. Leaderboards have less readable times because it's the only way to preserve all milliseconds, just like in GT4 Prologue leaderboards. If website will allow us to render that properly in the future, those can be modified.
. The cars in Arcade mode appear if you buy or receive them as prize in GT Mode. Trading cars from other memory card does not unlock cars in Arcade mode. That means the only way to acquire Ford Model T there is to gold the Super License. If there's demand, I can make Model T achievement work with GT Mode too.

-- General random advice for new and seasoned players --
. If you also happened to join RetroAchievements recently, don't forget to play on Hardcode mode! It only disables save states, while keeping your achievement statistics more legit.
. Bunch of the first races don't require license! You can go straight into Beginner's Hall and race there. Some One-Make events at dealerships also require no license.
. Don't make golding licenses your first priority, these are supposed to be very tough. Might be a good idea to revisit them when you have an idea how to race perfectly.
. Bought a used car? Head to GT Auto to replace oil to boost car's power.
. Used dealerships update each in-game week, some of the car challenge achievements require cars you can find only there!
. You unlock cars in Arcade mode by buying them in GT Mode or receiving them as prize cars.
. You unlock tracks for Arcade mode just by playing the game, unlocks are tied to in-game day counter.
. Pressing L1 in GT Mode main menu points you at Home. Pressing R1 points you at your car's Country dealerships.
. At Home screen, pressing START allows you to tune the car right there.
. If you're not driving a fast car, consider turning off ASM aid - it can really slow you down if you steer too hard. You can turn it off in Tuning Menu under Driving Aids button. Unfortunately some Licenses (and missions?) do not allow you to turn it off, in that case try to be smooth with your steering, the ASM usually kicks in the moment you hear your tires screech.
. If you're not driving FR/MR car, or a very fast one, you may also try turning off TCS which prevents wheel overspin and oversteering/spinning out as you throttle.
. The general money farming method is Special Condition Hall - Capri Rally Easy. There you can win Toyota RSC Rally Raid car and repeatedly sell it.
. Yet I suggest you restrain from money farming, if you don't randomly buy tuning parts you don't actually need and if you sell all the cars you don't need anymore - I believe you won't have money problems ever. Getting a headstart by selling that Toyota RSC once is still worth it.
. The Tuning dealerships provide "Original" kits of Turbo and Suspension, you might be interested.
. If you drive Automatic, holding "Shift Up/Down" buttons prevents gear shifts you may find unnecessary - the latter is one the main reasons why people prefer Manual transmission in the first place.
. In Rally Events and Rally license tests - if you want to cheese, then bump into the walls with your rear, that way you don't get penalty.
. Wallriding is also a cheesy option we could always do in Gran Turismo.

Many endurance races do not have achievements for completing them in A-Spec mode because they require more than 2 hours in one session, which I personally find an unwelcome concept: your emulator/PC can crash and make it all for nothing. Using B-Spec instead has no challenge and is generally a time waste. On a regular PS2 around game's release, most people would just B-Spec all the endurance races.
If we could legally save mid-race during those endurances, I would consider it, sadly it was only an option in GT5.
I've favored endurance races that take up to 2 hours because that's exactly the limit original GT1, GT2 and GT3 games had, I believe that limit is reasonable.

Instead of requiring player to finish all 15 tough endurance races, you only have to finish 3 of them. While each takes roughly 1.5 hours compared to longer infamous endurance races, I've chosen to go easy on player. If you can finish these three - I'm sure you can finish the others too. GT4 has so much other content that I'd rather you spend time on all the variety instead of this. Mind you, if I were developing GT3 set, which also has similar Formula GT events - I'd make you finish all races there because GT3 has less content.

For the same reasons, you're allowed to finish only one race instead of all 4.

I'd put all these missing races into a subset. Also if 24-hours achievement is really implemented, I wonder if it'd be okay idea to grant two-three 100 pointer achievements. But maybe we still should limit at 9 hours instead, say, if some people have mastered the set and want more - ask these people if they are willing to actually attempt 24 hours, like seriously.

-- How to enjoy this achievement set and reach mastery --
. Do a new save file and progress through the game naturally.
. Before entering the event, check the additional challenges for it in the achievement list - usually it's earning certain amount of A-Spec points. Decide if you can and want to do that right away.
. Got a new car? Check if it's in car challenge list and see if you can finish that one alongside your regular progression.
. Generally pay close attention to the achievement descriptions, you're often not allowed to use Nitrous, but sometimes that's not the case! Or when car challenges explicitly state it must be a road (!) car.
. Consider keeping your experience varied: like finishing the license, then finishing all the events you can with said license while doing the Car challenge achievements alongside. Focusing on one thing exclusively can get tiresome quick.
. You're reaching endgame and need cars that are locked behind very long Endurance races? If you do not wish to waste time while also staying on your personal save file - the legal way is to get a memory card with savefile that has filled up garage, put it into Slot 2, visit your Home and use in-game trade function. You can even get Formula GT that way, which costs over 6 million credits.
. Generally the whole set is designed in a way that losing the save file means nothing, so don't be ashamed to borrow 100% save file if you have to, especially if you're already familiar with the game and just want to race.

-- Manipulating A-Spec --
Many achievements require you to earn certain amount of A-Spec points in races. You may benefit from knowing what does and doesn't affect the amount.
. More horsepower and less weight - less points. So giving yourself weight ballast - more points.
. Better tires - less points.
. Worse tires only on rear or front - more points.
. Starting the race with worse tires, going for Pit Stop and switching to better tires - no change in points (abuse this for endurance racing).
. More downforce - less points.
. Brake upgrades - no change in points.
. Nitrous - no change in points, but it's not allowed for most achievements.
. Anything involving drivetrain upgrades: Gearbox, Clutch, Flywheel, LSD, Driveshaft - no change in points.
. Body rigidity upgrade - no change in points.
. Exiting and lunching the same race again may give you different opponents - and different amount of points you'll get.
. Arcade Races and Family Cup in GT Mode allow to specify opponent difficulty. For most car challenge achievements, setting it to +2 or +3 is a good pick.

-- Additonal commentary on this set --
Due to RetroAchievements limitations, I had to resort to "in one sitting" conditions. This also acts as reasonable save tampering protection. Ideally I wish we could group achievements, so website tracked each race individually without making them look like separate achievements, the latter is exactly what I did with certain big and long events.

The set may give an impression of being bloated with all these individual car challenges. Hear me out: they are here because Gran Turismo is considered more than just racing, it's a way to get familiar with cars, how different they are, their history. Gran Turismo in general is a reason why I've got into racing games and cars, as I played plenty of GT1 and GT2 on original PSX. Pretty sure I'm not the only one, even the people featured in Gran Turismo 7 say the same. Some of the cars featured in GT4 are so weird or uncommon you may've never heard of them, and the game doesn't force you to do anything with them, so I make you try driving them by featuring achievements instead. I also believe it's kinda funny set design, as car badges on your profile page actually may look like a collection of cars. It's also a legit way to give more purpose to the Arcade mode, as you can access these cars there too and quickly finish off some of these bite-sized achievements.

I've met opinions that Core set absolutely must include all endurance races because they're part of the game. I consider such opinions rather extreme in case of GT4, as doing do would be disrespectful to average's player time spent. Just because developers have made bad game design decisions doesn't mean we always have to put up with them. I personally have played many Gran Turismo games and most of the times endurance racing is just a slog with no challenge. Only starting from Gran Turismo 6 the devs started to make them more fun - by making races last up to 30 minutes, with more than 6 cars on the road, with dynamic weather and day/night cycles. If you happen to share an opinion to include all endurance races in core, I dare to ask you: Have you actually played any of those endurance races?
Just so you know: none of endurance races in past games go over 2 hours. And Gran Turismo 4 is the first game to include B-Spec mode, in which AI driver does racing for you.

Gonna be frank: the real reason I've taken Gran Turismo 4 is because I'm afraid some other person would do "Achieve 100% progress" achievement and I'd go mad.

There's no need for that, game is extremely big, but rather open-ended, most of the achievement set would be progression anyway so what you have there will contribute to your "real" 100% regardless of save files. But for licenses you will 100% need a fresh file, because I will make an achievement for each test gold, but not passing the test, only actually getting the license.

To prevent cheesing, easy events will likely have A-Spec points requirement on top of them, if I can manage to code that in achievement logic.

I also want to spare players of extremely time-wasting endurance events like those 24 hours ones, 1000km. They're stupid waste of time even in B-Spec. I'd say disable achievements, then cheat them to atleast get the Formula One car (from 24hr nordschleife), save the game and enable the achievements back, or just take one of those 100% saves.
Do expect playing actually tolerable Endurance events in A-Spec though, these were in GT1 and GT2 sets and I consider them bearable.

I will prioritze PAL version because of different language support, but I want to support NTSC too.

I should also look into making you drive weird cars that the game doesn't have events for.

I like the more creative approach to making cheevos instead of 100%. I also hope that the NTSC version gets supported, since I'm used to NTSC versions.

I'm already having a slight craze over B-Spec, it's just unless I do an achievement for every race (that will make them over 600 for sure), it will be possible to cheese.

Because I can take 100% save which may have all races with best A-Spec points result filled in, then I reset event trophies and replay them all with B-spec, it's impossible to know if all events were finished A-Spec because the "best A-Spec points" values are not reset.

If I don't find anything, I may look for compromise: maybe simple events you would be required to do A-Spec in one sitting, but for hard events - achievement spam.

200 A-Spec race subset seem like a cool idea on paper that I wouldn't like to bother testing myself. Would be nice if some hardcore player could assist in making a list or validating existing ones.

I may put "win any 200 A-Spec point race" in core set tho.

Don't be too aggressive with the easy A-Spec limits. It's fun to take a good (not insane) car, and just trash the competition. That's the point of the easy events in my opinion.

Honestly for the A-spec races, it might be fine to give 1 point for beating each race ignoring the limits otherwise you'll have to craft a lot of hand crafted achievements for an already bloated achievement list.

No achievement per individual race makes sense, gold per individual license will be fun to work for (or skip).

And yeah, Coffee Breaks are not required, but are some of the best challenges in the licensing.

Kinglink You do reflect my thoughts, as of now if I consider Sunday cup, I will probably make it like "Finish all 5 events in one sitting" (no A-spec restrictions), and then also "Finish ANY Sunday cup race and get 50 A-Spec points or more" - that's how I'm thinking to approach most of the easy/short events.

But then I'm yet to decide what to do with harder ones, like final Professional championships or many of the Expert ones, because I do remember them being hard, yet I still don't want 1 Point cheese.

By the way you talking about trashing the competition made me realise it might be funny to do something like "Lap an opponent in Sunday cup".

Also I found out about Dodge RAM 200 A-spec exploit, have to ban that truck unfortunately.

Glad to hear it, I know there's some proper hard races, but I always feel like there should be a good gradient in the difficulty for both casual and "mastery" junkies.

The 1000 Miles has 4 endurance races, I wanted to make player A-spec only one of them, ok

But then there's Formula GT championship which has 15 endurance races and I'd like to oblige player to use Formula
But I feel like making you win all 15 races legit is overkill, plenty of set is "choose your own challenge", thinking of toning Formula achievements down to "Win any 1-5th race", 6-10th, 11-15th..

One may argue "this isn't real mastery", well and I think driving the formula on gamepad without breaks for two hours is insane enough already.
