THIS EVENT HAS CONCLUDED. Thank you for your participation! Badges have been distributed. Be sure to check out the event page at Daily DistRActions Season 2 (Events) Daily DistRActions Season 2 (Events) and try to spot all the references to moments throughout the season.

I do not have a date to announce for Season 3, but it will be a longer wait this time. There's a lot of work that goes into this event behind the scenes, and I'm certainly ready for a break. I appreciate your patience, and thank you for making this event such a success.

-

Welcome to Daily DistRActions, the event all about randomly generated daily challenges!

How It Works
With the help of community suggestions, I have compiled a list of over 40 types of “distractions”. These are daily challenges designed to encompass a wide variety of what is possible on RetroAchievements. Most are gaming focused, but some explore other areas such as art and creative writing. Each distraction is active for 24 hours and worth 1 point on the leaderboard.

I generate each new distraction by using random.org to first select the category, then the specific randomized parameters. I only interfere with the randomization when the outcome feels excessively challenging or is overly similar to a recent distraction. For the most part, we are all at the whim of RNG.

To participate, all you have to do is post in the thread with some sort of proof that you have completed the currently active distraction. For most distractions, linking to your Daily History page is sufficient. If you aren’t sure how to access this, copy the URL from another comment and change their username to your own. Please make a new post each day that you participate rather than editing your existing post.

What’s New in Season 2?
Season 2 is a fresh start, with a brand new leaderboard and a new badge to earn. Nothing carries over from Season 1, so everyone starts on equal footing once again. Participation in Season 1 is not required to join for Season 2.

Season 2 introduces a brand new mechanic - bonus distractions! Every five days, a bonus distraction will be posted alongside the standard distraction, meaning there are two points up for grabs on these days. Some bonus distractions are “hard mode” variants, while others are secondary tasks to be completed along with the base distraction. Each bonus distraction will begin with either the word “instead” or “additionally” to clarify this requirement. Completing an “additionally” bonus distraction without completing the base distraction yields no points.

Also new to Season 2 are Rewind Tokens. These give you the opportunity to complete distractions that you have missed, up to 3 times per season. More information on how they work is available in the Rewind Tokens section below.

In addition, Season 2 brings forth several changes to the distraction list. Some new distraction types have been added, and some old distractions types have been altered, rebalanced, or removed. Always read the instructions carefully to make sure you aren’t caught off guard by these adjustments!

Rewind Tokens
Rewind Tokens allow you to complete distractions past their deadline. Everyone starts with 3 Rewind Tokens, and I will keep track of how many you have as the season progresses. There is no way to earn additional Rewind Tokens, and there is no advantage to saving them.

To use a Rewind Token, first complete the requirements for the distraction that you wish to make up, and then make a post declaring the magic words "It's Rewind Time". Let me know which distraction you are making up and post your proof as usual. If everything checks out, I will deduct one Rewind Token from your total and award you your point next time I update the leaderboard.

A few more points that may not be immediately intuitive:

1) When using a Rewind Token, you must fully complete the past distraction within the same day that you make your post. There are two exceptions to this rule:
- This rule does not apply to distractions which include the phrase "if you've done this prior to today".
- If you complete a distraction on the day it is active but do not post in time, I will not require you to do it a second time. It will still cost a Rewind Token, though.

2) You may rewind to a day featuring a bonus distraction to make up both the base and bonus distractions! This is the only way to earn two points for the cost of a single Rewind Token.

3) You may not "double count" achievements for both a current and past distraction when using a Rewind Token. For instance, if you rewind to an "earn x points" distraction while also completing a current distraction in the same day, points earned in the current distraction will not contribute toward the past distraction.

4) It is not possible to waste a Rewind Token. The Rewind Token is only "spent" in the same moment that I award you a point. If you ever fail to complete a past distraction properly, you can try again another day.

Timeline
This event will run for a period of 90 days, starting on the beginning of April 1st, 2022 and concluding at the end of June 29th, 2022. There are 108 points possible.

The event is based on server time, which is synonymous with the GMT timezone. An easy way to check the current server time is to look at the timestamp when you earn an achievement or post in the forums. I suggest familiarizing yourself with how many hours you need to add or subtract from your timezone. GMT is unaffected by Daylight Savings Time, but your timezone may be, so be careful.

Each new distraction runs for 24 hours starting at 00:00. I usually update the leaderboard and post the upcoming distraction within the first few hours of a new day, but be aware that I am occasionally late. Always review the dates carefully to make sure you are working on “today’s” distraction, not “tomorrow’s” distraction. The purpose of posting each distraction so far in advance is to allow players to continue participating at the beginning of a new day without having to wait for my manual updates.

Rewards
Season 2 features a brand new badge, separate from the Season 1 badge. Following the conclusion of the event, a Softcore badge will be awarded to all participants who have earned at least 30 points. If you earn at least 60 points, you can trim the border and turn it into a Hardcore badge. There is no penalty for skipping days, so I encourage you to pick and choose the distractions that align most closely with your personal interests. There is no special reward for reaching a perfect score of 108.

For the more competitive players out there, the top 10 will be recognized in the High Scores section of the event page. For an example of what this will look like, see Daily DistRActions Season 1 (Events) Daily DistRActions Season 1 (Events) .

Rules
Because this is such a complex event, I may need to add or modify rules as unforeseen situations come up.

1) Each day starts at 00:00 and ends at 23:59 GMT (server time). Distractions must be completed while they are considered “active” in order to receive credit. The only exception is if you use a Rewind Token.

2) Although distractions are posted one day in advance, this does not give you free reign to start early. All relevant achievements must be earned on the appropriate day unless explicitly stated otherwise.

3) All achievements must be earned in Hardcore Mode.

4) You must post in the forum in order to receive credit. I will not retroactively award points to participants who completed the distraction but failed to post when the distraction was active. The only exception is if you use a Rewind Token.

5) Usage of an alt account is not allowed.

6) A few distraction types require me to make subjective judgment calls. As the event host, my ruling in these cases is final.

7) Resetting and re-earning achievements to complete distractions is allowed unless explicitly stated otherwise. Reusing the same achievement(s) or proof for more than one distraction per season, however, is not allowed.

8) In the event that you require a manual unlock in order to complete a distraction, please bring this to my attention. As long as the request is submitted before the end of the day, I will honor it even if it is granted late.

Frequently Asked Questions
“I have a question, what’s the best way to contact you?”

For time-sensitive questions, you can either post in the #daily-distractions channel of the official RetroAchievements Discord or send me a private message here on the site. If you post a question here in the forum, I probably won’t see it until it’s too late. I try my best to address questions promptly, but I cannot be available at all hours.

“Is Discord required to participate in this event?”

No, but I recommend it. It’s an active community for discussing the event and sharing strategies with fellow participants. It’s also an easy way to view my announcements without having to sift through pages of replies.

“Why aren’t I on the leaderboard?”

If I haven’t added you to the leaderboard, it’s most likely because I can’t see your post. If your post says “unverified”, this is an automated anti-spam measure that needs to be manually overridden. If this happens to you, send me a private message and I will help you out.

“My score on the leaderboard is wrong, can you fix it?”

First, I recommend double checking when I last updated the leaderboard, as the discrepancy may be because I’ve fallen behind. I do make mistakes sometimes, though, so feel free to let me know if you think there is an error, and I can double-check things on my end.

“Does _____ count for this distraction?”

This is the most common question I receive, and I’m glad to answer these sorts of questions, particularly for the more open-ended distraction types. I like to reward creative thinking, so the answer will usually be “yes”. I may not always be around to answer you in time, though.

“Why aren’t I allowed to use an alt?”

Since this event requires a certain amount of daily maintenance on my part, I like to keep things as simple as possible in order to streamline the process. Alts introduce a layer of complexity that I’d really rather not deal with for a daily event, as well as some potential cheating concerns. I understand why this is such a common request, though. I will continue brainstorming to try to come up with a way to accommodate this in the future.

“I have a suggestion, can I share it with you?”

Yes, please do! I’m always looking for feedback on how I can make the event better. Ideas for new distraction types are always appreciated. If you prefer to remain anonymous, I will distribute an anonymous survey at the end of the season.

Question: are rewind tokens only for tasks previously missed, or could one technically skip one days task to do an easier / one the player prefers a second time?

Take tomorrow's for example, 150 Gbc points. In a week, if one is Complete a set, could I use a rewind for the 150gbc points, yet also do the 150 gbc point distraction ?

Maybe I need to clarify the wording. Using a Rewind Token allows you to earn credit for a past distraction that you have not completed, but you still need to complete the distraction. You may not apply the same achievements to more than one distraction. It's not a reroll to "replace" a distraction with something easier either.

Ahhhh, so theoretically, I skip tomorrow, and do both tomorrow and Fridays using a token for tomorrow's?

Yeah. You can skip tomorrow's, then at any point later in the season spend a token and make it up.

Yes. You can see this in the forum timestamps. I posted the thread at 00:00, exactly 24 hours before April 1st. So 24 hours from now will be the beginning of a new day.

Well, let's see how I do this time that I don't count with all free day-time.

I red the rules and I think I got all the conditions. But just to confirm I got the 7th rule, when you say that I don't carry the past season, this means I can re-use achievements I used for the first season if I want, right?
