I can about guarantee you that there's no way to verify specific songs are being played. CDs (which is all that the game sees regardless of what you give it) have very little metadata attached to them, and using slightly different masters of a song (say, a 1991 original and its 2011 remaster, or even just a video copy versus the album version) would generate different levels, so you can't use the game's output as a guarantee of anything either. You'd have to provide the music to players of the set, which of course runs into questionable legality, and even then you might still be able to exploit it (say, using songs of the same length).
PS2Hagrid 30 Mar 2024 01:44
in regards to legality, surely it would be legal in the same way custom songs for clone hero are legal right?
mariteaux 30 Mar 2024 01:46
CH doesn't come with custom songs. They all come from various people's Google Drive accounts and the CH team doesn't touch them because they are objectively redistributing copyrighted material. If you'd like to post them somewhere that isn't RA, then yes, I'm sure you could get away with it.

Why does it disable Hardcore mode if I'm swapping discs???? I'm not changing to softcore last minute after grinding all those songs on perfect ;-;

use retroarch
Monolate 9 Jul 2024 11:00
You can also do this in Duckstation just go to play with my own choice of CD in Vib-Ribbon then change disc from file in Duckstation to the audio cd you wanna play.

if you want to stay in hardcore after changing discs, make a .txt file with all of the exact names of your vib ribbon and custom CD .cue files each on a new line, then rename the extension to .m3u and open that in your emulator

If you are having issues with the Custom CD achievements, please read the Forum Topic Tutorial: https://retroachievements.org/viewtopic.php?t=11871&c=74178#74178

Its lengthy, but its how I've earned the achievements and several others. There are two methods in that post, the 2nd one is hidden by a spoiler tag as its outdated but still works.

I heard that this got a 60Hz patch https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/8674/ can the patched game be supported?
mariteaux 29 Aug 2024 14:44
Would that give players using it an unfair advantage? If so, I don't want it.
Golbi2654 29 Aug 2024 14:52
This was originally released in Japan & I thought the patch would make it more of a similar speed as the Japanese version.
mariteaux 29 Aug 2024 14:53
That doesn't answer my question. Is the game easier at 60hz than it is at 50hz? If it is, then it's an unfair advantage to the 60hz players and I'd rather not see it be supported.
Golbi2654 29 Aug 2024 14:59
You could patch the game yourself and make a comparison to see the difference.
mariteaux 29 Aug 2024 15:00
Yeah I'm not doing that. I already mastered the set and I don't really care that much. Since you're the one asking for it to be supported, you should do that and let us know.
Golbi2654 29 Aug 2024 15:01
Ok.

best ps1 japanese game. period.

Fantastic little gem. While there's always a bit of a mismatch between the song and the timing of the obstacles you're supposed to avoid, it's never too egregious. It's a shame this is the case even with the songs included on disc -- I would have expected those to be manually adjusted in some way. [So if you're having trouble mastering a track, it's sometimes best to just mute the game entirely, lol.]

Being able to play your own songs is a great novelty. Generally, the best charts are made from songs that lack repetition and are without a thumping bass drum. I really enjoyed what came out of using the 'Kakariko Village' track from Twilight Princess. I should note that the guide included in the forum was helpful in making a working CD, but exporting the songs as .RAW made them sound high-pitched in game, while exporting as .WAV worked fine.

My thanks to the author for creating this set. I would agree that supporting either the 60Hz patch or the Japanese version would be ideal, but I would stress that the game is already playable as-is. I highly recommend others to give it a go.

Underrated PS1 gem with one major flaw: the strict timing that you had to press the buttons for each obstacle. This game loves to mess with a song's tempo, which can make it a hell lot less enjoyable when it decides to be cheap and unfair. This is most noticeable in the song "Roll Along" and pretty much any custom music you try. Not at all a dealbreaker if you're just playing this game casually. But to get a perfect in any song, this is incredibly annoying.

And when you use your own custom tracks, the game can throw a lot of different visual effects at you to completely mess with your eyes and it is so poorly designed. The effects with the flipping obstacles moving at different speeds can screw off.
mariteaux 11 May 2025 00:47
Eh, you'll get used to it.
