While the shoddy writing is its most obvious fault, imo the fact that djinn usage turns 99% of the combat in the game into a joke as another substantial flaw.

There's a genuinely interesting class system (that gets much more fully expanded in the sequel) but no reason to ever make use of it when everything bar a few bosses dies to high-level summon spam. And for bosses that can tank that, Granite/Flash alternation cripples enemy damage output, Luff locks down psynergy (absolutely wrecks Deadbeard), Ground straight-up stops an enemy action, etc… if anything it gets worse in TLA because you have even more djinn with these types of effects.

And even without that, combat isn't difficult — I've done challenge runs with no djinn usage in battles and the only battle I found truly challenging was Saturos on top of Mercury Lighthouse… where I'm substantially underlevelled for what the game expects because I always do the lighthouse before Kolima.

And no, I wouldn't say the writing gets better in the sequels. Though I will say I did genuinely enjoy the optional dialogue in TLA where Kraden goes off on you if you've selected 'No' _every single time you're asked a question_ in the whole game so far.

I will say the grind to get Isaac to 40 even with the Storm lizards grind was not a fun one, but I greatly enjoyed the challenges the other achievements offered.

Hey, did anyone unlock the "God of War" achievement? This achievement does not appear on the page, it is as if it did not exist... The requirement is to win 50 hordes of enemies, and whoever appears in the achievement image is the guardian of the elemental stars. I already completed it and it didn't give me the achievement.

The god of war achievement was demoted about 4 years ago and is only visible in unofficial. If it showed for you in emulator it's because you have a setting enabled to make unofficial achievements active. These will never unlock for you on the website so it's best to disable that setting.

Mastery 30: I have very fond memories of playing this game on my old GBA on holidays. In my memories it was a grand and complex RPG. On replay the game is way shorter than I remember. The djinn system adds a layer of depth but tbere are a few very clear "best things to do in combat". Still a great story and competent RPG though.

The achievement set was great for the most part. The only really annoying achievement was the level 40 one. When I finished the story I was level 29 and with speed up/autofire it took me roughly 2 more hours to reach level 40. On the upside, the two achievements that required monster drops were very easy for me even without the RPG manipulation. All in all I had a blast revisiting this RPG. Thanks for the set!

I liked the set. Its a little simple but Golden Sun is a relatively tight RPG especially if you've beaten it a dozen times and remember how everything works and where everything is. I do think the achievement to grind to 40 is not worth it as even then the arena was not especially challenging. I was ready to finish the game at about 16-17 hours and had to grind for about 3-4 hours to then take about 15 minutes to finish the arena on my first try. But I love this game so much and it was fun to get achievements for it. I'll likely still replay it every few years anyway.

I was able to complete this and loved doing it, but the grind to 40 was the worst and unnecessary. I'm not a fan of missable and RNG achievements either, but thankfully they weren't terrible, and the missable ones were easy with a little planning ahead. Overall pretty decent list, thank you!

Once you beat the Venus lighthouse you cannot go back and get other achievements! Double check your save and BE SURE you don't save after the final boss fight unless you have everything else done!!! Learned the hard way just now!

Mastered! All in all this was a really chill set for a game that was as good as I remember it being :) The level 40 grind was iffy but aside from that, it was very enjoyable and taught me a few new things about the game

Mastered! Good set, the grind is not as bad as other rpgs, in a couple of hours killing tempest lizards you're done and you'll get so many healing items from them that you won't need healing psynergy on the arena.

Second mastery, first 100% hardcore! This was a good set, the most annoying was the lv 40 grind and even that was mitigated with 5x speedup

Mastered. Honestly, you'd have to remove the achievement for reaching level 40, which requires you to farm XP for hours on end, only to inflict the arena on yourself. If you really want to keep it, lower the level to 30, which is the natural level reached by the end of the game.
