Anyone know of any tricky enemies involved in the Missed a Spot achievement? I have 45/46 :/
UnicronLucas 26 Aug 2023 03:08
I can't seem to get the good ending, every time I walk into the room where Jill is locked, the emulator I am using (retroarch with beetle) freezes. I am guessing this emulator just isn't compatible very well? hopefully this warning will save someone from playing through the game only to get stuck at this part hahaha
Princescyther 26 Aug 2023 04:52
I'm using the same emulator with Retroarch and it worked fine for me :/
UnicronLucas 27 Aug 2023 19:48
That's so odd. Perhaps it is my computer that cannot handle it then

Mastered. Battle Mode was miserable.

Mastered! Tough set, but it was fun

A tip for anyone struggling with this set, I just found out that the japanese version, which is also linked, has auto aim, unlike the american version. Honestly it's worth sacrificing the ability to read for that in this game if you are already familiar with it. No auto aim is completely busted and kinda ruins the game by taking a lot of the speed away from the player, which just destroys the ability to properly fight fast enemies. Old school RE may be no RE4 when it comes to shooting mechanics, but it certainly isn't meant to be this messy.
WeskerHunk 23 Oct 2023 12:34
Saddly though the savea don't seem to be compatible between these 2 regions, so I guess no swapping to the japenese version just for certain parts for those that really want to read the texts in english.
WeskerHunk 25 Oct 2023 00:50
Was this set as a whole tested with the american version? The japanese version is far easier due to auto aim and other balance differences. I know at least the Tyrant is more resilient in the american version, which together with the lack of auto aim makes the "Speedy Destruction" achievement (see it's page for more info in the comment I left there) far more complicated than it should be, if not outright impossible. I also noticed that the american version only gives 2 ink ribbons per pickup instead of the japanese version's 3, but at least that doesn't change much about the set. Anyway, this set seems unnecessarily painful with the american version, it's also very odd that both versions are linked when one is far more brutal than the other. If the idea was to balance around the easier version while still allowing people with the harder one to try that's fine as the easier one's clearly closer to the developers' original intent and just works better (removing auto aim is just asinine), but there should be some warning for people playing the american version, like a 0 points achievement when starting the game for the first time.
WeskerHunk 25 Oct 2023 01:00
By the way, it's not just "Speedy Destruction", most achievements that involve not taking damage are also far more brutal in the american version due to a lack of auto aim and enemies being more resilient, and that extends to the no healing run as it would still accept very little damage. I also imagine that the knife only run would be awful there without auto aim, as an already clunky challenge would be made many times clunkier. Lots of challenges that look fine in the japanese version are just egregious in the american one.

Finished the set a while ago and just coming here to say that it's quite a cool set with some really interesting challenges. I recommend it to anyone who wants more out of the OG RE1 and can get their hands on the japanese version, which provides a great experience with this set. I wouldn't recommend playing the english version lacking auto aim though, there are better things to attempt in life than that unnecessary frustration. I don't see it as a flaw of the set though, just of that version, seeing as the set supports both and if it held back due to the clunkiness of the american version it would just be a less interesting set.
endiihz 26 Nov 2023 00:09
I recommend everyone to play the Japanese version (Biohazard) because it's easier. You have auto aim and double the ammo.

Huge thanks to Siouxerskate for this great set, but I had a terrible experience.
Beetle Saturn (Retroarch) was the only emulator that actually worked, the rest were plagued with graphical issues, freezes and major slowdowns.
Beetle Saturn doesn't appear to be the most reliable emulator, I had constant issues with achievements:
* "Cutting a Rug" not popping despite getting the full knife only achi
* It took 6 attempts before the herb combining achis popped
* When playing as Chris, the Spencer Explorer counter wouldn't count certain rooms until I re-visited them multiple times after Mansion 2, (VJolt Chemical Storeroom, Costume Closet and Greenhouse)
* Launch Party had to be manually unlocked as it wouldn't pop for any character

I can also confirm the Beetle Saturn freeze that UnicronLucas mentioned above, it happens as Chris if you use the three MO passcodes and talk to Jill BEFORE fighting tyrant. After the tyrant fight, if you enter her cell to free her, you'll freeze. Don't talk to her through the cell door to avoid the issue, or use Kronos (it can load Beetle saves)

I'm almost 100% sure all these problems are due to the emulator.

The best part of this port is the battle mode, it's a shame there aren't more levels for it! Thank you for the amazing set regardless.

Mastered on the American version!!!

I did every single achievement exclusively on the US version.

It was a freaking pain in the ass, especially those achievements involving the knife, not taking damage, dealing with hunters, the Tyrant, and the Battle Game.

You have no idea how much I missed the auto-aim.

There should be an additional badge for doing it in that version since the Japanese version is totally easy mode compared to the American one.

I think that both versions should not be considered "the same game", given the abysmal discrepancy in difficulty between Resident Evil and Bio Hazard.
WeskerHunk 31 Dec 2023 17:24
@LuisEduardoGQ I don't think a separate badge for those using the american version would be feasible because I don't see anything in retroachievements suggesting that which hash was used is even tracked. I mean, sure, it must be a linked hash for the achievements to even work, but after that initial check there's nothing visible anywhere (as far as I can tell) saying that I got X achievement on the american version, which leads me to believe such information isn't stored anywhere, and it's probably like this because there isn't meant to be any discrimination between which linked version a player chose to unlock an achievement. In this particular case it would make sense to separate based on this criteria since the gap in difficulty between each version is wild, but this isn't the norm. Honestly the correct solution here would be to just have each version separated as it's own game in my opinion, just like you suggested on your last paragraph. Either this or have the american version be used for a bonus set and the japanese one for a regular set if it's even possible to use that feature like this. Let's face it, both versions having the same achievements still wouldn't be ideal even if there was some recognition of which version a player used because that would still mean that it wouldn't be possible to balance the set for both versions. Separate sets seems like the way to go here, with the one we currently have being kept for the japanese version. And even that would be controversial at this point because it could piss off the people that mastered this with the american version, since a split the way I mentioned would only recognise that they unlocked the achievements on the easier version. On the other hand, with the current system no one has any evidence on the site that they used the harder version anyway, so maybe that doesn't actually matter in this case.
WeskerHunk 31 Dec 2023 17:40
Personally though my recommendation is to just not bother with the american version regardless since any version of a classic Resident Evil without auto aim is just a busted game not working as intended in my opinion. I do like how the american version increases the difficulty in other ways, but this one just ruins everything and sucks the joy out of playing this game. RE2 did this better, at least in the Dual Shock release (there's no reason to bother with the original one nowadays anyway) you could always just enable auto aim in the menu, which still keeps the other changes that make the american version harder, and there isn't even any penalty for doing this. And then they even went and made the Dreamcast and PC versions have both regional settings and even harder difficulties as well (one for each regional setting even!), all while still allowing auto aim. If you want hard as balls classic RE try that, not broken RE1 without auto aim.
Ryudo 31 Dec 2023 17:44
Did it without auto aim. Wasn't aware of the JP version having auto aim lol
QnubJin 10 Feb 2024 22:38
I also did it on the American version, it was tough but I enjoyed the challenge, PS1 and DS were cakewalks after I mastered Saturn.
QnubJin 10 Feb 2024 22:39
I was surprised why the Saturn version yields so little points compared to the other ones, I guess many people just switched to JP which explains that. Didn't really make sense to me that DS or PS1 yielded more points than the much harder Saturn version.
WeskerHunk 14 Feb 2024 20:49
@QnubJin It's probably a complicated situation having to balance points for a set that supports 2 versions with wildly diferent difficulties. In a case like this it would probably just be better to have two different sets. I like difficulty too, but not the kind that comes from the frustration of having to deal with a game that works poorly due to the lack of an intended feature. It would have been better if the JP set had harder conditions to compensate in my opinion, though I still enjoyed the experience.
