Is there a strategy for Chaos with the solo thief that I'm not seeing? I've gotten to him a bunch of times but the only thing I can do is just use the Defense sword twice and then attack with the Masamune and hope; I also recently started using the Bane sword if he slows me, as that has a 1/201 chance of killing him which seems more probable than doing it through one-hit physical attacks. Am I missing something or do I just have to get luckier?

@14ausher I made sure to save scum almost every single levelup i got, i had about 52 strength, low 800 HP, about 102% natural evade %, i casted from the defender sword twice and then just spammed attacks hoping to get lucky, thankfully i managed to kill Chaos on my first time reaching him, but it took me about 1-2hours of resetting before i even got to him.

I dont know if my savescumming really payed off, or if i just got really lucky.

It really is just luck - you can vastly improve your odds if you save scum level ups like Orph suggests (I would recommend this for Thief, Black Mage, and White Mage at least -- there's a reason I gave them 100 points for beating Chaos).
Your strategy is basically all you can do against Chaos. The average Thief does about 188 damage/turn to Chaos on average, so you need 11 turns of attacking to kill him (reduced to maybe 7-8 turns with an optimized Thief and good luck). If you get slowed, it's virtually impossible to kill him with attacks, so you'll have to pray to RNG for the Bane Sword then. But I think it's a coin flip as to whether you're more likely to win by just attacking each turn after setting the Defense, or by just using the Bane Sword each turn after setting the Defense.

Starlite is right. I just used defense until he cast cure4 for the first time and then bit my mouthpiece and attacked him furiously. I was lucky to do a lot of crits and i managed to kill him before he went for cure 4 again. But really this is just luck based at this point

Ironically the problem against Chaos is not really to survive against him, it's to do enough damage between his healing turns.

Also I 'd suggest to start your class runs with the lower classes first, get to the volcano, level up and make a back up save there. That way when you're done with the lower class you can start a new game with the evolved class, just go defeat lich, then load your backup save you made on your lower class run and go see bahamut to evolve. That way you will save a lot of grinding time

I finally did it; thank you, Bane sword. I'll never make fun of you again.

Anyway, I did optimize my level ups for every level I gained before the volcano (which was a lot of them; I fought Astos at the level where you get a third hit, 26, and didn't actually go into the volcano until I had the airship and had also looted the good stuff out of the Waterfall Cave and Sunken Shrine), but I didn't do that for the ones after that because I figured that the benefit would be pretty minor compared to the time save of being able to grind Agama's instead of overworld mobs. I'm inclined to think that I was correct given that I apparently lost out on 3 damage from Strength, 3% Evade, and like 50 HP maybe? My final HP was 777. I'll probably do the same thing for the Black and White mages, though I might try and just grind on the overworld so I can do it for every level given their even worse physical prowess and HP (though the White Mage's natural HP is slightly better than the Thief's). Overall, I'm just glad to be done with this run as at least the White and Black mages will be more interesting, even if they still will require a good amount of luck.

Stat gains on level up are fixed to some degree, in that you will always gain certain stats at certain levels for each class, but you also have a 1/4 chance of each other stat going up as well. If you save before leveling up, you repeatedly level up to try and get more of the actually useful stats, which are Strength, Vitality, and Agility. Intelligence does literally nothing and Luck is useful to get to 16 so you can always run, but that isn't a huge deal because most characters will naturally get to that point quick enough.

Strength is useful because every 2 points gets you one extra point of Damage, which is sorely needed for the classes that can't wield decent weapons like the Thief and the non-Red magical classes who are stuck with weapons that have a pathetic base damage of 19 for the Thief and 12 for the others for most of the game.

Vitality is useful because every 4 points gives you an extra HP on each level after that; this means that it's best to optimize it early on and it doesn't matter nearly as much later. This can get you like 100 extra HP by the end-game, maybe more, which can greatly improve your survivability and protect you from bad luck.

Agility gives you one extra point of evasion, which basically just gives you an extra .5% chance to dodge any given hit of a physical attack. This is by far the least important, as you should be using the Defense sword to cast Ruse twice in every scary boss from that point onward, and that'll give you enough evasion to dodge almost everything regardless. Still, passively dodging more attacks certainly doesn't hurt.

Overall, it's a good idea to try and make sure you get Strength and Vitality on every level up in the early game for each of the weaker characters, and Agility helps too but you could probably skip it without too much issue. It's not crucial, I've found some people off this site taking pride in not fixing their levels at all, but it can give you an edge.

It also has a list of every single random encounter and whether or not you can run from them.

That guide goes into the nitty gritty about how everything in the entire game works. It's not presented nearly as nicely, but it does have information like level up tables and formulas for how everything works.

@14ausher i disagree with agility being by far the least important, when im doing runs through the dungeons, im either running away from the battle or casting defender then fighting if the fight is unrunnable.

Even on runnable fights the enemy will get a bunch of hits in, so having that extra agility is really needed for the final dungeon to try and preserve as much HP as possible.

Instead of attacking CHAOS in waiting for him to cast CUR4, if your defense setup has already been done, you can heal with items or magic or even drink the remaining Heals if there is anything. Every bit of HP can make the difference. :)

man that blm one was intense. THF and WHM can't be harder than that can they? That one felt like VIT and STR were absolute requirements on every level up.

I did one playthrough with moderately above average stats at ToF. Continuously died to being nuked twice by Lich and other bad luck. Came back with a new file nearly fully juiced with STR and VIT. Went from 527 max HP to 617 max HP and could survive 2 nukes. Difference between life and death. Went from getting to kraken like 10% of attempts to about 90% of attempts. Hit a damage threshold where I didn't need my spells for lich and kary and fast + mage staff outdamaged my spell charges averaged over the fight. These little stat increases matter so much. And man those worms on the air floor became the hardest part of the whole run even with max evasion they love to sneak in 200 damage hits.

I also found probably the greatest leveling spot for BLM is Astos's castle. The trap room with mummies. So many charges can take them out. FIR2, FIR3, LIT3 and all of those are different tiers. You're close to a map for saving and getting better stats on levels and the area is accessible extremely early from when you get the key. You don't have to leave the volcano for leveling bonuses or leave long dungeons like with other spiked tiles and BLM can wipe those packs out fast. All the way to level 50.
