@Ghal416 Yeah, I don't think anyone has a problem with having to do the Shinespark shortcut. It's about having to do it in such a tight time limit. It'd be nice if there was a way to detect using the Shinespark shortcut without relying on the time.
Ghal416 29 May 2023 03:33
I don't know, some of the comments of precise inputs could be read to be not liking the sequence as well lol. Beyond that though, there is a way to check what animation that Samus is in (was mentioned in the forum), but on testing it was hit or miss that it would work to catch the hit that Samus is in that animation at the right time. Even so, it really wouldn't take away the insanity since it is still easy to screw up the sequence. In the end, itd be frustrating no matter what beyond the logic writing. Finally, as far as I've been able to find, there isn't a way to assure that a player is fighting the silver pirates without the AI manipulation. I suppose I could have locked what coordinate a player is at when fighting them, but that would be fraught with its own issues that likely would lead to tickets since it'd be easy for players to run afoul of that.
bcrew1375 29 May 2023 04:51
@Ghal416 Yeah, I'm not sure it would be an easy problem to solve, but I can personally testify that if not for the precision required to charge the Shinespark in the robot room, I probably could've had this in half a dozen tries max. If you miss that charge on the first try, you've likely already wasted too much time. Unless you perfectly nail it, you either hit the wall or fall through the floor. Nowhere else in the run requires that kind of precision.
Andrevus 29 May 2023 05:53
Every line of criticism can be handwaved away with "well it's supposed to be hard and frustrating" and any sort of leniency asked can also be handwaved away with "well that would make the whole point of it skippable", which i'm sorry but it's an incredibly toxic way of viewing any criticism. I understand it's most likely impossible to add checks to see if "this one specific method" was used, but that doesn't change the fact that this is still ungodly levels of punishing. That is to say nothing of the whole "ai manipulation" angle that i'm not even touching.
bcrew1375 29 May 2023 07:02
Just wanted to add some perspective that multiple people advocating some sort of tweaks to Speedspark Escape are people that have already unlocked the achievement, myself included. Just want to make it clear this is not a "whining because we can't unlock it" thing.
Ghal416 29 May 2023 14:05
I never said that it was. I value hearing different opinions, as well as constructive critique, and it allows me to see other manners of views on this matter. And if all things could work out, as I've mentioned before, I would consider tweaking things (I in fact did). But again, there are aspects that are just difficult to measure through. If it changes though, it will be because of such conversations that it was possible.

Let me in fairness point out that I have also heard from some who did get the achievement that were fine with it, as well those who haven't said anything. This isn't to diminish the opinions mentioned here of course, but to point out that the overall picture is what I expected...some like or don't mind it, others don't like it, and others just move on. It matches with the fact that it is definitely a rough achievement and will get that kind of varied response.

Finally, in response to another comment, I don't see how a different perspective is "toxic". While they might not be something one agrees with, that doesn't make them problematic. I strive to not assume the motivations of any one speaker, and I sincerely hope I'm not being either. There is no point to it, and all it does is provide an impasse toward understanding each other. I have multiple times said that I understand the achievement is difficult (in my opinion, not much different than many across this site either core or bonus, and even some within the same franchise), and where I stand on that at the moment. If that isn't good enough, well not sure what else to say. Perhaps that just demonstrates that we have reached as far as can be discussed, and again, nothing wrong with that.
hbROBO 2 Aug 2023 13:27
With all due respect this is exactly the kind of set that people see right after discovering RA that turns them away from the site forever. If devcomp really did unanimously approve this revision then the entire team's decision making needs to be in question.
Hatty 8 Aug 2023 08:29
Great game, horrible set.
If you're trying to get all achievements in your first run, you're gonna have a horrible time. Do yourself a favor and play the game normally then go for the remaining achievements ONLY if you really want to do it but beware, you're gonna have to do stupid movement techs that speedrunners use if you want to get all the achievements.
BrutallyDigital 22 Sep 2023 12:06
Mastered! LET'S GOOOO!!! Holy cow, I put more dedication to this game than I ever did back in 2004.
leonardvgs 13 Oct 2023 11:41
Excelent remake of the classic metroid.
WhyNot360 19 Oct 2023 02:02
Mastered. This set is fantastic, I don't know what people are on about. The hardest things about it are the challenges imposed by the game itself.
Chickenzes27 27 Oct 2023 12:40
Personally I'd be inclined to agree that some of the very difficult speed achievements should probably be moved to a subset. There's really no reason why there couldn't be a "Speed Tech" subset, since then people who want to do the achievements still can, and those who don't want to practice for hours to master the set don't have to. Obviously there's a case to be made about the set not being too easy to master, but I feel like doing all the bosses damageless on hard mode is already a steep enough challenge for most players.
WhyNot360 27 Oct 2023 18:41
The hardest speed achievement for me was actually the beating the game in less than 2 hours one, which is rewarded by the game itself so of course that has to be part of the set.
The other one people struggle with is the final escape one, when I did it I had time to make some mistakes and do a less than ideal fight against the pirates at the end and still finished it with a couple of seconds to spare. It took me 1 hour from no hitting mecha ridley the first time to getting the escape achievement, just practice with save states and you can get it surprisingly consistent.
About the damageless bosses, this game played normally you can tank through the bosses with no strategy and win easly. The achievements force you to actually learn their patters and do a clean fight. All of them have exploits you can make use of, and they're really not hard unless you're trying to combine them with other achievements like low% at the same time.
Shmayd 14 Dec 2023 16:01
what is going on with the hard mode leaderboard lmao
Boblers 10 Jan 2024 19:20
Regarding speedspark escape: I don't see how even 1:40 or 1:45 without the shinespark is possible, given how twisty-and-turny the room the shine skips is. Dropping the achievement to that should still be reasonable, I think.

I'm also kind of confused why we don't want players to AI manip the silver pirates - players pretty much have to AI manip the damageless bosses, why are we suddenly not okay with AI manips?
MuffinJets 3 May 2024 21:43
Made the comment in the relevant achievement listing, but even as a speedrunner expecting 1:55 Chozodia escape as a part of the normal set is ridiculous at best.

The author's takes are inconsistent and have made this set not worth reattempting in the future.

To be clearer: To any future players looking at this set because the item-collection achievements look easy enough, your enjoyment will either die at damageless Hard Mother Brain or 1:55 Chozodia escape.

Disappointed.
Tetsutekken 2 Jul 2024 02:45
Something is wrong when a game this popular half of the achievements are not even 2% rate
MirrorDark 7 Jul 2024 19:11
Oh wow, yeah, the unlock rate is really low. Guess that's what happens when you're stubborn about your achievement set. Fortunately I'm not really a hardcore hunter, so it won't affect me.
Raykusen 2 Aug 2024 08:02
Good game, horrible set. The worst experience i've had in the RA site so far. Won't touch this set ever again. Don't even try the set if you are not into sadistic stuffs.
