Sometimes life just doesn't give you enough hot dogs.

What helped me was only counting how many more hot dogs I needed. If I had 9, I thought "don't need any". If 7 hot dogs, "need two more hot dogs". Going for as many as you can is only practical if you have < 9, as they don't count as points.
