@ChaosKonrad, I once had a duel with Kaiba that ended in 2 turns. I set a Blast Sphere, he used Cyber-Stein to summon Ultimate, attacked it, then the sphere exploded and I win.

I finally mastered this game all within 1 year of game days

Mastery #2 VERY grindy. Especially since I decided that I would not use passwords for my cards. Make it more enjoyable that way. Glad to finally beat a game that eluded me in childhood

Mastery #5
Master # 270
YGO Mastery #1 - Decided to tackle the very first Yugioh game of my childhood and it shows its age, unfortunately

The Good
The soundtrack for duels is very pleasant! However, it's expected to run its course after 10-20 duels per characters. Expect to bring your own music. I would listen to it on its own, particularly Shadi and Pegasus' themes. You can also get all the staples, 1700-1900 beaters you need, and cards like Cyber-Stein and Gaia the Dragon Champion very quickly with passwords and then flesh out with duplicates later on or unpasswordable cards like BEUD. So, getting a strong deck is not an issue. You'll need it.

The Bad
The game design is very limited. Not to dock the first (western) Yugioh GBA game any points, but I gotta. All you're doing is dueling, dueling, dueling. No puzzles, no tournaments or challenge duels to break up the pace. Just dueling. Tier 4 has the most variety, but very quickly you will realize the shallowness in card and CPU deck variety. At the very least, you can exploit the AI somewhat by baiting S/T removal with a dud card, for one. There is an emphasis on getting good cards through the passwords. And you're limited to one deck, so make it the best deck. No reason to diversify. Right, the set.
A lot more can be done to at least reduce the tedium I felt. Cheevos for winning special duels (A list can be found on the tcrf page for holidays) for holidays, Rare Hunter encounters, etc. Summoning certain cards. Even just progression cheevos for unlocking the cumulative victory per tier booster packs or acquiring each key card at Nationals. Some ideas.
A bit more could be done to flesh the set out and revise it, within the scope of point total and achievement variety.

As far as revisiting the set after an update? Maybe. At its core, EDS does not lend itself to an engaging grind with its limitations. Do it for the Yami icon or the trip down memory lane and if you can stomach an easy, tedious grind.

Mastery #5

It's an okay-enough time, but it gets stale kind of quickly with how many opponents run a lot of the same cards due to it being a very early game and therefore lacking variety.

Honestly, the worst offender for this game in my opinion is having to hold down your keybind for the "B" button just to have duels play out at an acceptable speed. My thumb got sore quite often just having to hold down that keyind button the whole time.

I was in mid-October by the time the only achievements I had left were beating Simon and Grandpa, which required several meaningless duels against Yugi just to get fast and easy wins to get to the Championship just to unlock Simon and then Grandpa.

I personally would not do this set again just because this game is a slog to play with the same-y opponents' decks and unacceptable game speed if not making your thumb/other finger sore holding down the keybind for "B".
It took me over 2 months to complete to mastery because I just did not want to play it with these issues.
CassetteCobra 20 Jan 2025 04:28
Inoxcas, the better option for fast forward is simply having it run constantly by pressing one button and then change the speed of it throughout the game. That's what I did to get through this.
Senorsombrero 31 Jan 2025 21:19
Mastered. Nice
Jazerus 11 Feb 2025 23:01
You can hold R when you are doing rock-paper-scissors at the start of a duel, keep holding it until the duel loads and all of the unnecessarily slow animations will play out very fast. Once the duel starts you can release R and the speed-up remains.

A cool game! YGO was very limited back in this day but that's not necessarily a bad thing, especially for someone new to the game. The number of meta-relevant cards is quite limited and it's easy to understand when you might be putting yourself in a bad position, because the strong spell/trap options available to you are also the main threats that the opponent decks are using as well. I would recommend not hanging out around the bottom tiers and instead beelining for the good booster packs - the early ones are mostly full of cards that are very bad by this point in YGO's history, and the starter deck includes most of the must-have early pack cards.
Jazerus 11 Feb 2025 23:17
Oh, and if the grind is boring you, make a Cyber Stein OTK deck with lots of copies of Witch of the Black Forest and Sangan to search up Stein and Blue Eyes Ultimate in your fusion deck. The high-tier decks like Yami Yugi play enough removal to make it a real game even in the face of this, but you'll probably still win most of the time. Less-equipped opponents will usually fall in 2-3 turns. Equip and field strategies can be used, but are very underpowered in the face of this format's dominant spell/trap and effect monster meta.
karli 16 Feb 2025 10:30
MASTERED. this game is so dang slow to play and you gotta do all those repeated duels with everyone and they all got very similar decks and spam the same cards.. no variety whatsoever.. and waiting till in-game november was a torture.. but just wanted to write here if you are new to try this game, hold R on rock, paper, scissors screen till it fades to black.. you will thank me later.. nothing else realy to add here..
fuerted 13 Mar 2025 15:09
Master #300.
I ran just to get this number once I saw I could get it.

This YGO game is very simple, too much grinding and little variety. All the NPC decks have Raigeki and a lot of the cards are the same. It was very frustrating see Magician of Faith recycling Pot of Greed, Raigeki and Dark Hole.

If you want this mastery, I recommend take your time and play from time to time... because the grinding is very boring and monotonous.
Misa 18 Mar 2025 01:07
this set is basically a pretty vanilla "unlock everything".
you have to win A LOT so i'd recommend speedrunning 20 wins on Mako Tsunami, the Gemini Elf booster pack should give you access to a lot of beaters and then you can take it from there..

i feel there's quite a lot of things that could make for good achievements, like exploring a little bit like "win by exodia" "win by deck out" "win without attacking", and silly stuff like "win during opponent's turn" and "deal 8000+ damage with a single attack".. some things in that direction could be fun to break the monotony :p
CassetteCobra 18 Mar 2025 01:16
If you want variety, then 2006 Yugioh is for you :p
Saitakis 23 Mar 2025 22:45
Does this game have an in-game list of obtainable cards? I don't see any achievements related to card completion.
Clarent 23 Mar 2025 23:33
@Saitakis I assume there isn't one because you get a copy of every card upon beating Simon, if you unlock him from winning the National Cup.
As for outside resources, Yugipedia is great.

Mastered, very entertaining, and easy to complete. I really hated the spam of triggering spell/trap cards.
BuzzedLightyear 8 May 2025 06:17
1st mastery and man, this was a bittersweet experience. This and Forbidden Memories were my Yugioh go to growing up and while I've enjoyed the nostalgia of going back to play this... the grind was way crazier than I remember and some of the duels just made me want to pull my hair out (looking at Yami Bakura and most of the third tier duelists) but this game will always have a special place in my heart as the early days of Yugioh mean a lot to me.
Rensie 22 May 2025 21:37
Cyber-Stein the game.
