Mastered! According to RetroArch, this took me 24:12:55 in real time and I finished with a final In-Game time of 78:19.

This is my 4th time doing a Professor Oak challenge in a Kanto game so I basically knew what to expect. If you've played any of the Gen 1 Professor Oak challenges, this is basically the same thing but now you have to use the TM for thief to get two 5% moon stones from 6% encounter Clefairies in Mt. Moon for the second milestone. There are some minor differences in the third milestone like being able to get 1% encounter Grimer in Celadon City, but otherwise this is basically the same as Gen 1.

The Post-Game is fun but nothing special if you've caught them all in any generation after Gen 1.

I recommend using your Master Ball on the roaming legendary dog as it is harder to catch than Mewtwo. I also recommend having a team of Meowths with the Pickup ability to potentially get rare candies throughout the run.

Overall, this is a great beginner Professor Oak Challenge. The Moon Stones in Mt. Moon are probably the trickiest part, but even they can be overcome with enough effort.

You can use the Repel trick in Mt. Moon (B2F) at level 12 to get a 16.67% encounter for Clefairy, so yeah, you might want to do more research on that.

@gauxel, I considered using the Repel Trick with a Level 12 lead but at that point in the game you only have enough money for about 10 repels at the most and they run out fast. You would have to soft reset constantly to use that trick.

Additionally, it appears that in Fire Red the repel trick decreases the rate of getting an encounter at all (IE, without a repel I get an encounter every 6 steps, with the repel trick I get an encounter every 60+ steps). I found that using no repels got me more clefairy encounters in the same amount of time, although this came at the cost of In-Game time for the leaderboard.

It does explain why your In-Game time was so low for that milestone if that's the trick you used.

Also, don't know if anyone noticed but you can trigger the leaderboard posting multiple times for a milestone if you view the Replay in-game when the game is loading.

Thankfully, it doesn't affect as much if you are further in-game since your time is already posted but I have had it happen every time I reset the game and the leaderboard would trigger giving time for the last milestone/gym you did.

Example: you are at Gym8 with timer (before battling the leader) 52:00: xx and the replay loads your Gym7 victory (which you obviously had less time than the above one); the set will try to post 52:00: xx as the time for Gym7.

Yeah, I messed up and assumed I'd only need the 2 Moon Stones before Misty. Guess I'm starting all over again, which is a pain as pre-Brock is definitely the worst grind.

Mastered. Aside from the pre-Brock badge it is pretty easy overall, the roaming beast can be frustrating, but oddly enough, it took me longer to fish up the Grimer than finding Entei lol, also got a Shiny Geodude while searching for Clefairy to get Moon Stones, so it was a nice experience.

has anyone had any issues with the patch used for this subset? i played through the entire sapphire POC and never had a single issue booting or saving it. but when i play this one the game freezes at the GBA BIOS screen and won't progress. i can only get into the game itself by enabling the 'skip BIOS intro' option in retroarch. once i actually play the game i get frequent save file corruption forcing the game to go back to a former save and losing me lots of progress.

have patched this myself on the correct rom (Pokemon - FireRed Version (USA)). using mGBA core on android device. i don't want to continue playing if i'm gonna potentially lose an hour of grinding lol, anyone able to advise on necessary emulator settings to make it save reliably?

Whew! My first attempt ar a Professor Oak Challenge, now mastered. Had a lot of fun with this. Encountered a shiny Jigglypuff shortly after Brock and it carried me through to the end. Sing was indispensable, as well as Yawn from Snorlax later on. Now to see if I have the gusto to master the main set!

Mastery #58! After Mt Moon, this wasn't too bad. The first section sucked, but it steadily got better as the challenge went on. In the end, it took me just shy of 26 real-time hours to beat, about 53:40 game time. 2 POC's down, probably more to go at some point.
