Been slaying this game since childhood, and it's being revised yet again? I don't need to prove anything else, I learned secrets by word of mouth, tech by experimenting amongst ourselves and strategies by experience. I'm good. Cheers.
AuburnRDM 23 Apr 2025 00:26
The revision won't require you to unlock any more achievements if you already have 100%. It's just to overhaul the mini Mario challenges to be a little more forgiving while also covering more content. The trade-off is that everybody who already has them will have the new versions unlocked for them when they release.

MASTERED AT LAST!
Felixen 25 Apr 2025 21:55
I just wanted to share some thoughts about the Mini Mario challenges in the set. Personally, I donโ€™t think they quite fit. A solid achievement set, in my opinion, should reflect the challenges that the game itself presentsโ€”what it encourages or rewardsโ€”not necessarily what players think would be fun to try.

Take the 'Professor Oak' challenges in Pokรฉmon as an example: even though they're considered Subsets here, they're deeply rooted in the core mechanics of the gameโ€”catching them all is a natural challenge the game presents. On the other hand, Super Mario World doesnโ€™t encourage playing as Mini Mario. Itโ€™s not Kaizo Marioโ€”thereโ€™s no real design incentive to avoid Power-Ups, so forcing yourself to do so ends up feeling unnatural and unrewarding.

This is actually the first game Iโ€™m planning to master here, mainly because of the legendary status it holds for me. Iโ€™d just suggest that challenges like these, which arenโ€™t really supported by the gameโ€™s design, might be better suited for a Subset rather than the main set.

Said and done. My first mastery had to be Super Mario World. This game is legendary to meโ€”not just for what it is, but for what it means.

I still remember playing it with my best friend when we were kids. We'd start a new file almost every time, but I only ever wanted to play the first world. Anything beyond that felt too difficultโ€”Iโ€™d hand over the controller, afraid of the ghosts, the lava, or just the unknown. It's funny thinking about that now, because today, playing this game feels like muscle memory. Itโ€™s like my hands already know every jump, every block, every secretโ€”like theyโ€™re following a script written years ago.

Mastering this game here felt more like a tribute than a challenge. A way to honor all those hours spent passing the controller back and forth, arguing over who got to play next, and laughing at silly mistakes. Itโ€™s surreal how something that once felt intimidating is now second nature.

โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… - Five stars for what this game means, specially for retro-gaming lovers, but those Mini Mario ones could have been easily left aside.

Mastered #7.
First game played in SNES and now is completed.

My first game mastered
The Most difficult achievements imo are mini mario challenges and everything is lava
Really challenging and fun!
somerandomguy1234 27 Apr 2025 21:27
Mastered #27! This is a good set, I like the challenges, obviously there's the Mini-Mario vs the World achievements which were a little annoying (MMvsTW SPECIAL was pain), but other than that, it's pretty good! I recommend to anyone who's want a set to start with but I don't need to say that considering 1000 people have mastered this game. (I was mastery #1000!!!)
Glitchy88 27 Apr 2025 22:20
I find it funny that this set has 1000 masteries and people want the achievements made easier yet Sonic CD that doesn't even have 60 masteries as of this comment and people are fighting tooth and nail to keep the absolutely ridiculously difficult achievements in that.
darly 27 Apr 2025 22:59
@Glitchy88 It's an interesting phenomenon. The people trying to make these achievements easier are trying to prevent it from turning into a set like Sonic CD.

Having a main set that's exceedingly difficult, especially on a popular game, doesn't bolster the community. It pushes people out of that community. And then you get people wandering in unaware and getting pitchforked in the arse by the elite few left behind to gatekeep and make sure no common scrub could ever be granted mastery.

Most of us are just here to feel a bit of nostalgia and have a record of games we beat and hopefully mastered. A scattered few are here to directly compete with everybody else and don't want it to be fun and enticing for as many people as possible. They want it to be a place for only the most elite to show off their accolades. They want to be able to measure their self-worth against the tough achievements they've conquered. They want to feel better than the people that couldn't earn a certain achievement.

Take a look at Metroid Zero Mission. It's hugely popular on this site, but the achievements are so insane that you've got even speedrunners in the comments saying "yeah this is a bit much". And not a thing has been done about it. But that also highlights overarching theme here on Retro Achievements. Not a lot ever changes once a set is published. It's entirely up to the dev unless it actually violates some very oblique rules.

Maybe they should just change the term from "Mastered" to "Gilded" or something. So that it just means you've completed all the achievements without the connotation of mastery. One suggests doing everything you can do in the game, the other implies a very high level of skill. And the sets on this site are all over the spectrum between 100%-ing and mastering.

I've only mastered 17 games but if at any point somebody came along and made the achievements for those games easier, that's fine by me.
goabernathy 27 Apr 2025 23:11
I would consider myself a casual player in comparison to a hardcore enthusiast or speedrunner. I mastered this game anyway. How?

Like a good chunk of the masters here, I dedicated time to accomplishing each one of the achievements.

Iโ€™m proud of knocking it out and the feeling I had just popping the โ€œeverything is lavaโ€ cheevo was pure joy. adjusting the cheevos to be easier is an insult to those who dedicated their time to mastering.

Sorry @darly, I disagree with your argument because it just sounds like an excuse.
ShadwSonic 27 Apr 2025 23:26
Honestly, the Sonic CD thing is a bit more nuanced than "people fighting to keep things in". Actually, we more want to boot the Dev Times OUT into their own subset, but Devcompliance rejected that idea. Robbing those who already earned those cheevs would be worse than leaving them in, so...
contusion10 27 Apr 2025 23:33
come on guys, i dont consider myself a pro gamer, a speedrunner or an enthusiast, but the minute i saw what this site is about and read some comments, i decided to try and yes, it was hard as hell, yes i was frustrated and yes it took me many days to master, but i have never thought of complain about the sets or ask for the devs to make some achievements easier to get... i think the correct approach is to learn what the site has to offer and if im cool with it then i stay... i guess its not for everybody... i too want to have fun with these old games but also discovered the pure satisfaction of achieving something only a few other people had the balls to, that feeling is great and i truly belive the most difficult achievements here are also the most cleverly designed, i mean, the mini mario one in the awesome level is hell, those damn fish made me suffer and almost quit many times, but when i finally unlocked that damn thing i realized how cool is the concept of those achievements and the hard work the devs have to put into program them... so id recommend to chill and try to enjoy, this site is giving me so much joy and the only thing frustrating at this point is not the dificulty of some achievements but some people not giving them the chance and effort to find the greatness in them
Felixen 27 Apr 2025 23:37
@darly I'm still pretty new to this community, and as I look ahead to the games I want to play, most of them seem to have sets that are either moderately difficult or just slightly challenging to master. I understand the point you're making, and it does make sense, but at the same time, I can't help but wonder: isn't it kind of pointless to treat this as a competition?

After all, RetroAchievements is a place built by fans of games, for other fans of games. Who exactly would someone be trying to impress by making a set overly difficult? Other players who are probably here for the same reasonโ€”to pay tribute to the classics they love? It just doesn't add up for me. If anything, it almost feels like a misunderstanding of the spirit of the community.

At best, maybe the developers who create these super challenging sets are just exceptionally skilled at the games they loveโ€”well above the average player. And thatโ€™s understandable; some people are simply better than others. But to me, it doesnโ€™t seem like thereโ€™s much point in showing off or trying to create "status" in a space that was clearly meant to celebrate games, not gatekeep them.

Again, I'm still new here, but that's the feeling I've gotten so far.
darly 28 Apr 2025 00:33
@Felixen I understand why there's competition, it's just disappointing that it rears its head in every facet of life. It's like going to a birthday party and witnessing people compete over who can shut their eyes the tightest and blow the birthday candles out the hardest.

Generally things are pretty great here. But when something not great crops up they're often feels like there's little you can do about it.

Ultimately though you have to be careful about which achievements are unreasonable and which just require more effort than people would like to put in. People don't like the mini Mario achievements in this set. They can be tough, but they're not unreasonable. The only one that's unreasonable is the flying fish level, but eventually I got through that one too. Twice. And I feel like a better player now.

A lot of angry posts on this site are heat of the moment reactions to being frustrated over an achievement they have trouble with. But they too eventually get the achievement.

It's mostly great here. As I said. I don't find anything wrong with this set, personally, but if changes were made and it made a lot of people happy, I've got no problem with it. And I understand why people don't want the bar to be lowered, ever, but I don't agree with it. Wanting people to struggle just like you did is kind of bizarre. And not being able to understand that other people might be struggling is equally bizarre.

We are all here have a good time. I'm always in favor of what lets more people have a good time.

Mario World is such a superb 2D platformer. Loved it back in the 90s, still love it now. Feels good to finally get the mastery.

This is a solid set. Thank you, all the authors.

Itโ€™s very fun beating this game, but there is a savage difficulty curve in some of the final cheevos if you go for 100%. Mini Mario III felt particularly cruel with the very hard to avoid checkpoint on Valley 4, which could bork a run right at the doors of Bowsers Castle and require a restart back to Choco 1.

But you know what, restarting multiple times meant I got really good at all those levels. Same with Mini Mario Special. And I guess feeling like youโ€™re (kinda) mastering the game is what the mastery badge is all about.
