14h game mastered, very fun to play, maybe a speedrun of it would be cool.
Elmotus 23 Dec 2024 21:22
Man, I was confused as to why the missables weren't popping for me even though I beat them with full health, only to come here and read the comments that it means to have full health AND fully upgraded health. I think those descriptions could be a bit clearer on that

Mastery #7 | An alright game, probably too easy if you're just planning on beating it, so I would recommend mastering it as the set is pretty fun and a bit more challenging.

No racing? No matter. This game deserves its reputation, it is a good platformer for the old Nes, and even the tunes are good!

The bosses are mostly pattern-based which will take trial and error, but nothing too intolerable if mastery is what you want
Great set.

Нормальная такая игруха на вечер. Мастера я делать, конечно не буду )

Mastery #205! Took me 4h20 to master. My strat was to grind a ton of levels on A-1 so I could re-attempt the bosses a ton of times without going game over. Another level I found was great for grinding lives was C-3. My suggestion, do world A, than C, than B spending a fair few minutes grinding enough lives to be able to figure out the bosses. The Slag Brothers especially felt really hard, but after throwing 30+ lives at it I eventually got it.

Master #12: Considering how many terrible licensed NES platformers there are, the fact that the worst you can say about this one is its very easy and simple says a lot. For those looking at it to see how easy mastery is, there are several stages where you can grind lives, but even if you have to continue you just reset your healthbar and start on the stage before a boss. Most of the difficult bosses are after stages that contain extra lives, so its easy to get your bar back up and get back to practicing the boss. Most bosses have a simple pattern you can learn, and after that its just execution (barring Red Max who thought precise jumping on a slippy slidey ice stage was a great idea?). Since there are three routes done separately, you don't have to do all the bosses in one go, and can focus on one route at a time.

fun little game, although the no hit chevos are gonna be hard and like someone else said, descriptions could be a bit clearer.

Assumed this game would be mid but saw it'd be easier for the event, turns out it's a blast!
The music is great especially

I chose this game for my Christmas event and Play this Set article because it is a game I likely never would have played on my own but was actually borderline a hidden gem for the NES. Solid soundtrack, nice visuals and animations, and really tight controls without stupid "don't rent this game" NES level design (also infinite continues is nice.) My only real complaint is honestly with the damageless achievements rather than the game, there is no reason to require fully upgraded health for them just make them basic damageless. If you want to master this game best advice is honestly brute force the damageless, the more lives you get the easier a boss is. Also bomb upgrade is far better than that worthless bark powerup so keep that in mind too. With a little practice anyone can master this because the continues are infinite. And as mentioned above this game is broken into three routes so you won't have to do EVERY level to challenge some late game boss so just be a bit persistent and you'll get it.

I'm confused on what the Full Heart Bar achievements. Is it no hit and have max health? I assumed it was just no hit based on the wording :////////
ZSlyzer 19 Jan 2025 10:20
@WadeB, as far as I have realized, it's just ending the fight on a full (upgraded to the max) health bar. So you could use the heal if you have it before the last hit.

Mastered #43.
The last of the Christmas event.

It's a decent platformer. Controls great, the power-up system is nicely done in terms of how much you need to put in to get the better stuff. The game could do with being harder so you'd actually lose this stuff on any regularity though.
Actual level design is kind of mid, and while the bosses are unique, they're very pattern-based.
Except that their big ball shots have RNG on their speed, which was quite annoying.

Set is fine, though asking for full health rather than no-hit is an interesting ask, as this means you can just fully heal before the fight ends if you have it available to you. (I only did this maybe twice successfully, so my initial run was teetering on the brink getting through as I had to redo the bosses to learn patterns)
Hot tip: All bosses take 8 hits for both phases, for a total of 16, so you can just count to 8 on the second phase for the heal.
WadeB 23 Jan 2025 06:40
So if I have 6 hearts can i take hits and beat the boss and get the achievement yes or no im still confused and have been doing 6 hearts no hit for every boss
UnrealGecko 23 Jan 2025 11:57
Just make sure you finish the fight with full 6 hearts. You can take hits as long as you are able to heal yourself before finishing the boss.
firkinblin 29 Jan 2025 19:50
^ Really good tip, Gecko. Yeah, just hold a heart recharge until right before you beat the boss, and it's a good way to cheese those. Other than that, grinding a bunch of lives, as others have mentioned, is clearly the path to mastering this one.

Beat it for the event, but I'll definitely come back someday for the mastery. Probably one of the few 2D platformers that I've actually enjoyed -- likely due to the fact that this is Atlus we're talking about, which is still wild to know that they partnered up with Hanna-Barbera. Plus, the way they divided the three parts of the game and structured the continue system was extremely smart for its time. This made it more palatable for the event than the other 2D platformers by a long shot.

The power-up system is confusing and weird at first, but over time, it becomes kinda cool and gives the game some uniqueness and sense of strategy. The bosses are the only hard part, but they have fixed
patterns at least. So figuring out these patterns is extremely rewarding and the key to mastery.
