You're not imagining things, the enemies are effectively faster in this version than they are in the SNES version. This is the opposite of the other non-SNES, non-3D versions where they (and sometimes non-instant actions) became slower instead. If the achievements don't demand otherwise, try dropping the ATB level if the enemies seem too fast; this will usually effectively make you faster, as you won't bleed as much time to menuing as you otherwise would (Berserk and the auto-Berserk sword, the Avenger, are really good because they also avoid menuing). Dropping the speed was already sometimes useful in the SNES version (particularly against Zeromus, who can go from getting two Big Bangs for every one of Rosa's turns on Battle Speed 1 to one Big Bang per two of Rosa's turns on Battle Speed 6), but it's probably outright necessary here to make Zeromus reasonable.

Yeah this version is rough. Thanks solid for the read.

After some further testing, it seems like it's actually the ATB system that's been sped up; this means that Berserk is even better than it normally is, because it seems like your berserked allies essentially also gain the same speed boost that the enemies got. You can't make good use of it against Zeromus though, because Black Hole gets rid of berserk.

Also, I'm 99% certain that the long range glitch is still present. Basically, in all SNES versions (and probably this version), if you gave a character a long range weapon, it would set the long range bit for that character permanently, and so all of their weapons would just ignore rows forever (enemies also have a back row). As a result, if you just give everyone a bow briefly, they're more effective physical fighters forever. The only characters that can't make use of it are Yang and Tellah. Almost everyone else can use a bow. Kain and Edge can't, but Kain can use the Dwarven Axe (it's long range for some reason) and Edge can use any boomerang (it might have to go in a certain hand; just put it in both to be safe).

That glitch pairs well with the berserk status because it means that berserked people attacking the back row isn't really penalized any more. It also lets Edge stay in the back row while still being able to use his best weapons, which he greatly appreciates.

It also pairs well with a strategy where you just stick Cecil in the back row and have all your allies near death so he covers them. He's very resistant (often immune) to physical attacks back there, and he's taking all of them. This basically lets your team be immune or near-immune to physical attacks if there's not other attacks to get killed by in the battle, so it's great for bosses like Asura or the Demon Wall. It's kind of annoying to set up though, and very unnecessary most of the time. Note that Cecil does not cover people if he's defending or berserked.

Mastered :) Thanks for a really great set and it was interesting to learn more of this version and the differences etc!!!

One more piece of advice; using Slow on the final boss works, and actually stays through the Black Holes (though Black Hole does get rid of Haste). You really want to have someone use a Spider's Silk (which is basically equivalent to casting Slow twice) on him as soon as he's transformed; he'll counter with Flare, but this will weaken his first Big Bang. With this, it's feasible to beat him at battle speed 6 with your characters at like level 57 or so (Rydia will be lower because she gains levels slower); you basically just want Rosa above 2700 health, as that's the most Big Bang can do, though it does have a sap effect so you need a bit more. Rydia won't get to that threshold in a reasonable time even if you gave her every HP apple like I did, so let her die (you want someone dead anyway for more powerful Cure 4s and all of her spells invoke counters anyway) but then revive her when he starts using Meteo for the "end the fight with everyone alive" achievement, as it can only deal 800-1050 damage and is likely to miss her. Once he's using that, it's the only thing he'll use, and it also means he's under 12000 health.

Do be warned that the stealing success rate is based on Edge's level; the minimum is 2% no matter what. The actual formula is usually Edge's level + 40 - the monster's level. Zeromus's level is 96. As a result, the steal chance is 2% through level 58, then 3% at 59, 4% at 60, and so on. Unless you grind a bit past the minimum, you'll be stuck with repeated 2% chances until you get lucky, which can be very miserable and tedious. Going a few levels higher would both make stealing much easier and probably make the fight a bit safer.

Anyway, that was a fun set; I really like the SNES version of FFIV, so I'm glad that this was mostly that but a bit harder if you didn't turn down the speed. It was a little absurd at times but not too bad if you use Slow a lot. Thanks for not including the rare drops.

Hot dog, Mastered! Excellent set. Thanks for giving the playstation version some much needed love.

I hope no one will do a revision saying "Ohh what about the tails and the summons? It is a part of the game! so it must be added" Had enough of these items lol
Valvadis 10 Feb 2024 22:03
I’m going to prepare subset with rare drops. So if someone really wants to do that things, will be able to use saves and test they luck. I just need an aporovement and I’ll start working on that ;)
RedrumOverdose 10 Feb 2024 22:04
That would be awesome.
QRS666 10 Feb 2024 22:08
Count me in! I have no problems getting some tails and summons if it is a subset! :) Hmm can be really tough to get the pink tail though, as you really need the alarm items and they can't be bought in this version. You can steal them but I think that place is missable, right? Some of the towers or/Giant? In any case, will be cool to see and try this subset!
RedrumOverdose 10 Feb 2024 22:11
There are two (missable) locations to get them and you can stockpile multiple 99s, which is nice. I usually just run with a 300 count and reset to my previous save if I run out.
QRS666 10 Feb 2024 22:20
Yeah I remember that was my strategy too mor or less :) I only have saves near the end though :/ And I'm not that eager to replay the game at the moment from start to finish lol. Well, we will see what happens :)
Kinlaien 10 Feb 2024 22:35
Thank you for keeping the rare drops as a subset. It is nice having one set of the game that doesn't have those on core.
14ausher 11 Feb 2024 01:36
Given that it will apparently be a subset, will it also have the less commonly represented rare drops like the Medusa Sword, the Crystal Ring, the Glass Mask, and so on? It’d be interesting to actually go for them, though you’d probably want to steal an absurd amount of Alerts first…
Valvadis 11 Feb 2024 17:21
I’ll consider it. I plan to prepare list of rare drops and publish it on the forum so you’ll be able to put some ideas :)

If it helps, here's a very easy-to-read list of all drops from the people who made Free Enterprise, an FFIV randomizer.

https://wiki.ff4fe.com/doku.php?id=item_drops_vanilla

It's for the English SNES version, which removed a bunch of items, but it didn't remove any equipment and so most of the unique rare drops are the same. I think the only notable exceptions are the Soma Drops and HP-increasing apples, though I could be wrong. It also removed just the Cockatrice summon for whatever reason (the other 3 droppable summons are still there).

I also believe that the "With j-items" version of the table is pretty much the same as the actual Japanese version of FFIV, at least as far as actually used drop tables, but they do explicitly mention removing the Medusa Sword due to glitches it can cause.

@14ausher thanks! This will definitely help
vintageclassicgamer 18 Feb 2024 09:10
Is it me or is the encounter rate through the roof on this version?
Eltana 20 Feb 2024 01:15
Great set, nice and straightforward! Looking forward to (and dreading) the rare drop bonus set!
