I don't know about solo plays, simple challenges can work. "Defeat the lich without anyone dying." or "Defeat Krakken using only items." Simple things like these just to have the players do something different for their 5th run of this game.
Kingsombra 10 Mar 2023 23:27
an MSX version? I am a big fan of Final Fantasy, but i never heard about this version.
Pikacshu 11 Mar 2023 01:18
Why not making the "Only Mages" and "No mages" achievements work if the player purposelly have those killed before attempting them?
Dividing the party sounds way better than 2 playthroughs of this version :(
WanderingHeiho 11 Mar 2023 03:18
The split was done this way to greater emphasize the use of the different classes, giving players the option to try out every class in the game if they so wanted.
vintageclassicgamer 11 Mar 2023 14:47
Hey more FF1 pts nom nom nom.
MogomraZero 7 Jun 2023 14:07
For all of the achievements "without mages", I would recommend running a party of 4 Fighters/Knights. Black Belt/Masters aren't NEARLY as good in this game as they are in the NES version of the game. Their unarmed attack power is NOT equal to "Level*2", nor do they gain "Defense = Level" if unarmored. They have to use Iron Nunchucks and Thief-level armor for 99% of the game, and while they get a lot of attacks with the Iron Nunchucks - they seem to get roughly double the number of hits they get with it in the NES version - their damage trends towards the low side, even with critical hits. I don't know/wasn't able to intuit the formula used to calculate BB/Master damage with Iron Nunchucks in this version of the game, but as a point of reference, my Level 33 Master was doing 8 hits against The Eye for an average of 23.5 damage per hit. Against enemies that had a higher Absorb rating, my BB/Master did very little damage compared to the Fighters/Knights in the party.

Somewhat interestingly, BB/Masters get more attacks and do more damage with the Masmune in this version of the game. In the NES version, Fighter/Knights and BB/Masters max out at 7 potential hits with the Masmune, whereas level 50 BB/Masters in the MSX version get 9 hits a round with with it. However, I don't think that justifies putting up with their low damage throughout the rest of the game.

Honestly, you might be better off with a Ninja (not a Thief) then a BB/Master - the weapons available to them do more damage, and they can cast the FAST spell on themselves to double the number of their attacks. And when I'm recommending a Thief/Ninja over another class, well, that's a pretty bad situation indeed.
jeftah 25 Jul 2023 04:42
Damn, thanks for the recommendation. MogomraZero. I chuckled at the Thief comment because it's usually FF1 noobies that defend that garbage class, and if Monks have been nerfed here, then 4 fighters it is.

Should make that run your "no promotion" run too, Fighters ought to be able to handle the game with equipment and Giants Glove buffs.
MogomraZero 11 Aug 2023 11:50
@jeftah Oh, I almost forgot - Melee characters start gaining spell slots in this version of the game once they hit Level 15, even if you haven't upgraded their class(es) yet. The spell slots just "sit in reserve" until a class change is triggered. IMHO, this still doesn't make playing anything but 4 Fighters worthwhile, but I suppose this might appeal to some players?
leonox2335 12 Aug 2023 11:50
Mastered! I was able to play the performance patch with achievements by adding the patched dsk file in the m3u playlist, so then it boots into the normal dsk file at the start of the playlist, so then I change and reset into the patched dsk, played thought my mage only run and all unlocked properly.

Just some addendums, as the patch creator said, bc the english translation expands and relocate internal files, the patch will mess with games created with it, for example, Garland and the princess will be missing from the Chaos Sanctum at the begging of the game, so create a new game and create/save your user disk in the non-patched version, also you can't create a user disk with the patch or reset via retroarch quick menu after the game loads, it'll softlock.

(Sorry for not waiting oficial support, but I just couldn't take having to fast forward every second...)
leonox2335 12 Aug 2023 11:52
About the gameplay, I'm sure it'll be more docummented as more ppl play this version but I say what I found about the game mechanics compared to the NES version, this is all observation, so it could be wrong:

- The RUN issues from the NES seems to be fixed, IIRC in the NES the game screws the calculation with the LUK values and character slots in the party, so only the 1st and 2nd character are be able to run properly.

- Sleep status work as intended.

- TMPR and SABR seem to not work at all, I tried using SABR via the power gauntlet multiple times on my 4 Fighters playthought and I never felt the supposed effects, no luck with TMPR also.

- Enemy Attack properties work properly I think, the original NES game would use a monster's weakness elements as its attack property, so for example, the late game Sorcerer enemy that can cause KO/Death with its attacks, bc that enemy was no weakness, its KO/Death attack is considered as a non-elemental attack by the game, so you couldn't even resist its insta death with Ribbons or Pro Rings, in my 2 playthoughts during the grinding to find the Warmech, I fought Sorcerers multiple times and I was never slain by their insta KO normal attack with resist equipment, could be a case of extreme luck, but it's very unlikely seeing how these enemies are so annoying to deal in the NES version.

That's all, Thanks for the set!
thereallouca 9 Sep 2023 07:46
I would love to do this set but the MSX emulators are a pain.
vintageclassicgamer 6 Oct 2023 23:58
So a heads up to everyone that does this set. The treasure Cheevos are kinda broken. They work but if you do it wrong they break. If you leave without getting them all, the gold boxes reset. You go get them again and they won't trigger the achievement. I did this twice for the earth cave and the volcano. Basically if you don't get them all.for.one reason or another reset.
solidification 12 Oct 2023 10:15
By the way, anyone wanting to grind and really can't get over the horrible frame rate in moving around, just go to the Ice Cave to where the Eye boss is and keep stepping on that tile. 806 EXP and 3225 Gold is easily the best bang for your buck in terms of what you get and how risky it is and how slow the game is. At level 25 with 2 RW, 1 WW, and 1 BW, he was dead in one round. At level 30, it was about 2.5 minutes per level up. Plus all the money EASILY gets you all the magic/items you need.

I encountered a game breaking bug where the princess(the one who got kidnapped from first dungeon) blocks the path to final chaos temple. Please help me!

Just got the Lute achievement after the Princess gave it to me but never the Garland achievement on BlueMSX core, maybe I should let this pass for now and play something else in a while.
vintageclassicgamer 4 Feb 2024 15:35
Or just make a ticket. It's not hard. Especially with it being so early game.
FPurpose 5 Feb 2024 14:08
Strange, I collected the only 3 chests the same day I failed to get both Garland achievements but today, I straight up beat him without the chests and got the achievement after giving up on trying to use a different core, but maybe I'll play this instead.
FPurpose 13 Feb 2024 11:20
16th of the game and 25th for me, Mastered! this used is one of my favorite versions of the game because of the graphics and audio but I now played it, I can say it's actually good but it introduces a bug that broke the Monk class, also not a bug but airship is far slower in this game, it's also slightly harder than original game, I like this game and thank you for this set, feels fun to play the same game over again differently, time for Pixel Remaster.
