It was a good challenge to master the haunted house

I'll assure you most of your time in this game will be spent playing Level 9 trying to get the no death cheev. Took me dozens upon dozens of attempts, but I finally gotten good RNG with the first few rooms giving me all the pieces. The constant flashing lights and the unfair enemy placement makes the cheev hellish to get!
CassetteCobra 19 Oct 2023 18:32
And mastered! This was an ok game. The cheap deaths you can't see coming and the inability to have your light on when an enemy is in the same room as you gets VERY annoying to deal with. The bats are the worst enemies to deal with 7 as they can stop a run from completion. That said however I recommend this one for those doing the Halloween event. Don't expect to complete it in 30 minutes though.

I thought "I ain't afraid of no ghosts" was just to avoid the ghost. I didn't think it was a damageless run avoiding everything OMG. Why am I "scared" of insects? Am I the eyes of a little girl in this game? lol
Overkill2301 22 Oct 2023 09:14
i recommend drawing a map, some levels have Nearly Identical layout except Level 9. and for Level 9 how i did it was i found the route to floor 4 to get the Sceptre (almost always at the beginning of floor 4) so you can only worry about ghosts when looking for the pieces. Locate all of the pieces and plan the way out then collect them as fast as you can and get the hell out.

I'm sorry but this is the worst game I've ever played lol

First mastered Atari game. What I liked most was the fact that the game encourages you to use your memory and reasoning for each phase and go where the pieces are to put them together and complete the next level. Third game of the event.

Mastered. Maybe it is just my opinion, but the RNG (especially on the later difficulties), the fact that your moving in the dark post-Game 1, and those *annoying* green bats, sadly made this game not all that fun for me. I'm sure it was okay for 1982 standards, but it didn't aged all too well in my eyes. Of course, your opinion on *Haunted House* may vary here. As do mines from Yours Truly. - VenHur, R.A

pure RNG hell. only mastered because of the halloween event
after you learn how the game works, the "normal" levels can be.... rewarding to clear, but level 9 + damageless is just hell.
you can just manipulate the RNG in level 9 though:
restart until a red spider spawns in the room below you, then all the pieces will be in floor 1 and 2, making you able to complete the run in less than a minute
LazulyLily 26 Oct 2023 00:45
For the level 9 no scare ach restart for red spider in the first room you enter. As far as I can tell this locks you into two or maybe three possible seeds. The one you want has a piece in the first and second rooms on the first floor (only way you can go).
From there you go to the second floor via the south stairs and head directly up to take stairs on the left wall back down to the first floor. This room has the final piece in it and all you need to do at this point is backtrack.
The green (alien?) will be your biggest issue in avoiding getting scared. I found if you wait in the room with the third piece for a little while (10s maybe) my path back was clear making the ach fairly free. Took me my second run after figuring out to wait to get it.

Thanks for the great tip, LazulyLily! Was able to get it because of you.

For those using the game manual's map, be aware that the map is incorrect on the 3rd floor, from levels 3 to 8. It displays 2 locked doors in the wrong places for the game. There is no locked door at the bottom of the second room on the left, and there is no locked door at the bottom of the first room on the right. The correct location for the locked doors is between the two bottom rooms and at the bottom of the first room on the right.

i have mixed feelings for this game. on one hand, it's a cool very early predecessor to horror games, and a sort of spiritual successor to Adventure in some ways.

but the sheer number of enemies on the later difficulties makes you spend more time in the same room with an enemy than not, which gets annoying quickly since you are unable to do anything while an enemy is in the same room. plus randomly bumping into one instantly as you open a door. the mansion just feels too small for so many enemies at once roaming around. (and it does feel like they gravitate towards your position at all times)

i feel the game would have been improved if you could still light matches and pick up objects while they are in the same room, since it's just so constricting to know an item is RIGHT THERE but unable to do anything about it because an enemy just happened to enter the room.

it's like a 3/5 for me
