@jazmataz Man, this game is long to be taken safely, and has to be done all in one sitting. Plus you use a turbo controller in all of your battle of olympus videos, it is ok, but is not original as people might play it. Mega man and castlevania once learnt are played through in 40 min. This is a massive game in comparison and could require even 2.5 hours or more to be safe in the strategy and still dying of platforming. We are all happy of new achievements that are made for better ram, memory, logic and even anti cheat, we would re do it for just that, the fact that the content of the new achievement goes against game real mechanics and core is a bit tedious. Now it is trend to have any game deathless and next time will be hit less, next time will be without turbo controllers and so on.

It is not a battle between who has it longer, it is about playing games and pushing them to a limit that in this game was already passed well with last revision due to using less items which is a fair challenge for the game, deathless in a side scrolling role play is a bit off topic
CarloAndrea97 12 Apr 2023 12:36
Everything can be achieved, the point im saying is that has been pushed an achievement also based on your success at it, but you used a turbo controller which doesnt make it a whole lot easy but makes it a bit bit more stress free, the thing is that this is not a curated game as platforming goes like castlevania or mega man. In mega man if drop the ladder you go bottom scrolling, here you insta die because the game doesnt track the bottom scroll.

The point is that once they will be able to detect turbo controller in the future, also turbo controller will be considered softcore and so on, there is never an end at making a game harder, the thing is that considering the game, a deathless in this game feels subpar compared to mega man and castlevania, and nobody says that those are the staple of achievements.

We accept it anyhow, but we feel it disrupts the community of the game only for the learning of cheevos coding.

Also im most mad at the one sitting for this game cause it is very long for safety gameplay, castlevania or mega man deathless with normal pace could end in 40 min, this might take even 2 hours and that is where it falls short to me.

I am extremely happy cheevos have been made of this kind and clymax has been great at doing it and learning them and im sure he will bring his knowledge to other games who better suits deathless, i just feel that for this game the content of the deathless is a bit off topic.
ChronoGear 12 Apr 2023 13:10
I feel like it would be better if the top 10 people to master a game were able to vote on whether a set should have a revision or not. That would make more sense to me than a group of admins that might not even be familiar with the game saying "Deathless? Sounds great, add it in"
CarloAndrea97 12 Apr 2023 20:08
Man, as far as i see it you're not having a nice behaviour, we are critizing what has been made with plenty of points, if you are happy with it i'm happy for you man, but you showed no empathy towards us that criticize and as showcased your last reply about turbo buttons, it shows you don't even hear the other view.

From what i see with these 3 achievements:

Deathless challenge adds nothing to the game core and mechanics, there are already challenging activities well integrated in the game and that is very tedious on a main set and is not tailored to the game engine.
Then the password thing. People already finished the game with loading from a password, what is the difference with finishing it without a load? I think that also makes a distinction of players which shouldn't exist. Deathless can't be done if loading, ok, but then why the entire game has to be done without the password, it adds nothing new to the table.

Then i also would like to hear your point of view, but not just "i did it so everyone can".

I will probably never start and experience this game because of the new achievements. :( The top 0.5% decided. Achievements are supposed to be fun, engaging and make you learn new things about the game. They are similar to a love letter. I heard the word doable doable thrown around a lot. What does that mean? Should the world record holder of smb design achievements for it? Hey guys I will ignore all people who's against this so I decided speedrun it in <4:55! Good luck for me!
ChronoGear 13 Apr 2023 17:59
Deathless is a miserable experience. There's far too many instant death pits and poorly placed enemies designed to knock you into those pits. Is it doable? Yes (as shown by jazmataz with his 10 videos. we're all very proud) Is it fun or rewarding? Absolutely not. And for people like dettomi, it's driving them away from trying the game entirely. I would reconsider having deathless in the core set.
ChronoGear 13 Apr 2023 18:44
A high nose? Nah I actually help people out on RA when they have questions they DM me. Every interaction I've seen you be a part of they call you rude or arrogant. You just admitted yourself you were rude before. So maybe, again, get your own attitude in order.
CarloAndrea97 13 Apr 2023 18:59
Also on ninja gaiden i gave a suggestion under an hard achievement to help people and you told me that it was obvious and useless that i gave it @jazmataz
ChronoGear 14 Apr 2023 10:04
Remastered! You know what I say, 100% or nothing. I just hope that my mastery of this won't make any other proud individuals feel like less of an elite pro gamer. My opinion of this deathless is still the same. Glad it's over with.
GrayCloudSpectator 14 Apr 2023 12:12
"I will probably never start and experience this game because of the new achievements"

You can still experience this game with turning achievements off or just not getting all of them. Countless people, which are possibly the majority of people who play with emulators, have enjoyed retro games way before achievement trackers existed and still do so. This argument which I have seen repeatedly on this website that RA sets are the only gateway to playing on emulators and will stop people from playing retro games is not a very convincing one to me.

"The top 0.5% decided"

I haven't decided anything. I just gave arguments forthe inclusion of deathless by comparing other sets which you can read in the thread if you haven't done so already. I assume that my arguments have been considered but in the end I still had no say on the decision.

"Achievements are supposed to be fun, engaging and make you learn new things about the game"

You do learn new things when attempting deathless, for instance, figuring out save approaches to certain situations and also planning what can or should be skipped because it's too risky or if a risky situation should be done anyway, because it eases the remainder of the game (getting optional but valuable items for example). I believe in regard to the above, this lets you engage with the game on a deeper level than just going through the game without these considerations.

"I heard the word doable thrown around a lot. What does that mean? Should the world record holder of smb design achievements for it?"

I agree that using the word "doable" without any context can lead to a slippery slope. What I mean with that is doable for anyone who invests the time in learning on how to overcome a particular challenge and which doesn't necessitate elite skills. I already pointed to instances of the run I uploaded where my play is subpar, which I thought was good evidence that this is beatable without being godlike, but feel free to disagree.
CarloAndrea97 14 Apr 2023 14:36
Yeah but do you understand that you are slowly building trophies as leaderboards themselves this way? If you always want to push the needle further because everything is doable, then it becomes like a speedrun leaderboard where if the first one did it, so everyone can and he's the only one winning. Nobody wants to remove your chance to showcase what you did even deathless in this game, it's just that is only a mastery badge, doesn't have to be a speedrun leaderboard that locks everyone out at first. I find achievements great to force you on finding secrets that blind i wouldn't know of, or to push the mechanics of the game further, and there are plenty of games that could need a deathless run just fine. For instance i just recently played metroid ii and i died only once cause i pushed it, yet there is no deathless there, and that is a game that has no instant deaths, but only safe strat for combats. This game is not curated well on the platforming enough to need a deathless to be considered master of the game, cause in this type of game making it deathless means really nothing if not only showcasing it, but for that there are leaderboards already and in the future when they add more hardcore set, they can be there.
GrayCloudSpectator 14 Apr 2023 19:03
Believe it or not, I definitely do not play for showcasing, since the primary purpose I use this service is that I can look back on which feats I accomplished. I do upload videos sporadically, but often for tutorial purposes which I do post here every now and then. I didn't even post the link to videos of deathless runs of other games until this one, but in this very case it was really just for showing evidence that there is room for error in a deathless run even in critical moments.

Also I do understand your reasoning that you are not generally against the idea of deathless achievements as long as they don't contain instant death situations citing Metroid II as an example. We just seem to be philosophically opposed in this regard, because I think in some cases it's pretty hard to draw a line of which game is reasonable to run deathless and which is not (most games with platforming elements just tend to contain instant death situations by their very nature).
Using Doki Doki Panikku as an example, while doing that game deathless sounds trivial if you have already gone through the SMB2 set, you'll notice soon that playing SMB2 without running, more collision glitches, less fair enemy spawns and not being able to switch characters between levels plus with the caveat of not being allowed to use warps is significantly more difficult than doing the very same in SMB2 and except for the stuff I mentioned, both games are basically identical.

In the end I believe though whenever the day should come when it's possible to load bonus sets without patching a ROM first, that damageless and deathless will probably be moved to their own sets, since having them in conjunction with achievements that are recognized within the game and achievements that point to secrets and easter eggs usually leads to the same debate of what and what shouldn't be included in the core set.
GrandmaNorma2 2 Jun 2023 15:39
Hey guys, just wanted to input on the deathless achievment. I think it should definitely be in the bonus set, considering this game is similar to zelda II in design, and similar games LIKE zelda 2 and castlevania have deathless in their bonus sets. Plus, the bonus set for this game has like nothing in it that's been achieved, so giving people a good jumping off point for tackling the other bonus challenges would be awesome. Mega man's a bit of a different beast, they are all real short games and the longer ones like x4 onward don't have deathless or have saves. I think damageless bosses is more than fine, because it shows that you've mastered sections of the game. Doing these damageless bosses shows skills and proficiency at the game while deathless is more a test of patience and consistency in those skills, similarly to Mein Kampf from Wolfenstein 2. Honestly, a no continue achievment or just keeping survivor around sounds fine to me, but that's just my opinion. Give the bonus set a bit o love and put deathless in there.
dettomi 2 Jun 2023 19:44
Yes that one belongs to the bonus set and it's simple to prove. Read Developer's Code of Conduct, Unwelcome Concepts 3. Falling is instant death not just damage loss so you need perfection. It really is a zelda II type of situation. That's the point of bonus sets not making it into a leaderboard for 4 people.
GrandmaNorma2 3 Jun 2023 14:47
No worries, Jazmataz, and I honestly didn't know castlevania IV had a no death achievment, that's also a bit of a problem but castlevania IV is quite short IIRC. Honestly, I'm not opposed to the game having a no death achievment, and I obviously have less experience talking about it as someone's who only played it as a kid, I just think the bonus set would appreciate having something as a baseline super challenge. I think it honestly can be a case by case basis, and I still have yet to actually start grinding this so it could be fine. Sorry if this post seems scattered, I'm new to this type of posting.
CarloAndrea97 3 Jun 2023 16:26
@Jazmataz

4 people that are within 3% rank of the whole site users is not a good testimony, it is so very biased towards challenges even outside the game box. Mega man plays much faster and if you are fast you can make it into 1 hour once you know the routes, this game if you wanna get items to play it just safer requires a lot of time, even up to 4 hours of stressfull situations because the hitboxes, the instant death and random spawning of enemies, plus all in one sitting.

Also we should never take other games or other sets as examples because nobody says that the other games with deathless achievements are any good cause of that.

It all depends on the game structure and the mastery badge of the game. In this game once you have taken already all the challenges of the bosses and such which were in the prior revisions why would you take it even further with one sitting achievements, the challenges to outake the mechanics of the game have already been laid out well enough before.
Slackot 9 Aug 2023 08:00
Mastering this sometime soon out of spite and to just say how making it harder was an awful decision. Subsets are a thing, for a reason. Use them.
SamsamDaGameMan 31 Aug 2023 00:40
Remastered! Happy to be done with that. Gonna boot the game back up and go jump off the Phthian cliffs just because I can.

I deleted my Comments from this. The Cheevo was moved to the Bonus Set. You got what you wanted. GG

@Jazmataz

Mate we know your vision of this all, we understand your point of you and sentiment for it. Be sure that in the event that the community of this game grows larger, I'll make sure the challenges you are also fond on for this game are presented again for this or the next generation of players for this game, and in case the new community of this game will find those challenges fitting the game and so fitting the new community sentiment for it, we will have no problem having them in.

Right now it was unjust the passing of a trophy considering the high sentiment against it from new players, to already masters of the prior revision, in the future everything can change and we want you to keep your sentiment on it.

This procedure doesn't mean at all that you are wrong about this all, and surely doesn't hide what you managed to do in the game, which is of course inspiring many to play the game that way aswell.
