Mastery #19: Man I really enjoyed this! Such a blast from the past. I played for like 12 hours in one stiting at one point hahaha. I did it in just under 26 hours!

Mastery #3 - First mastery on my Steam Deck! Played on MelonDS with little issues. Mainly the flickering at times when paused.

This was one of my favorite childhood games on the DS. Truly ahead of its time with the multiplayer back then. I will say snaking is your best friend to guide you on this mastery.

I will say though, I don’t think I’ve ever 100% this game legit before. As a kid, I went crazy with the action replay cheats.

The balloon fight was my last achievement, and the comments got me frightened on whether or not I’d be able to master this game. It really only took me a few losses in a row to get my rhythm and strategy down. I basically stuck around back trying to preserve red shells, then peeking out to KO the other drivers.

A fun, simple set. Definitely great to scratch the itch for a fun driving game. Thank you!

Mastery #2: very fun to revisit this childhood game. I do wish the tt / gold 150 were expensive of every kart, I'm sad I never had to play with some of the character's higher speed karts. Still had a blast though :)

Mastered #13! A very dear childhood game and still holds up great to this day! Well, as long as we forget that the AI genuinely is cheating in 150cc and Mirror, just look at those random speed boosts lmao. Watching a lot of speedrunning history videos on this game brought me back to it :)

Mastered. Really fun set (except balloon battle, good lord that was stressful). Lots of nostalgia for this game. First time getting 3 stars in every cup in this game as well. 29/32 were first try, 150cc star and special took 2 tries and Mirror special took several...that was painful.

Mastered #9 - 'Twas fun going back to this, was one of my first DS games and going back to it I was reminded why I love it but also why I never went for full 3 Star Rank (Moreso for the Cups, Mission Mode aside some annoying ones in the later levels were fine) were cancer. But omg what the fuck was that Balloon Battle achievement, absolutely absurd and took forever meanwhile the Shine Sprint I got done literally in a minute.
Overall very fun game and not too bad of a set.

Put this one off for a while, those 3★ 150CC Cups got brutal.
The DPad on the SteamDeck is very well made for snaking I've discovered, so I gave it another go and finally managed to get them all, after getting Blueshelled on on the RR loops too many times.

Looking forward to checking out the rest of the Mario Kart DS RomHacks now.

Had to start with one of my favorite games of all time. Played this game so much as a kid and I always keep coming back having even more fun than the last time. Getting these achievements were very fun and rewarding! The achievements I think I enjoyed getting the most were the character specific ones like "Borrowed the girlfriends car" Which was a fun way to try out all the characters and different karts. Overall this has been really fun to go through again and will definitely be starting to play more games in the future!

(Side note: I never realized how frustrating battle mode was until I had to win 5 games on hard mode. It felt like it was a 1v7 battle lmao.)

Mastered! Had been more than a decade since I last played this one, but I still got it! Not a hard set overall, but some achievements took me a few tries, like Mirror Special Cup 3 stars, a few of the missions, and SNES Donut Plains 1 time trial, that one being CONSIDERABLY harder than any other time trial, most of which I got first try. The most annoying cheevo is undoubtedly the balloon battle one, basically a test of patience and luck, one that took me 3 hours to get it (and none of those hours were fun).

This game also has some weird quirks, like the INSANE recoil if other karts bump on you if you're using a lightweight character (making Rainbow Road borderline impossible for them on higher difficulties), and how red shells are straight up busted, often ignoring your protection and hitting you sideways or even in the front. Also fuck SNES Choco Mountain 1, worst track in the game.

I haven't mastered this yet, I will soon, but here are some things you're gonna have to deal with:

- Learn to dodge blue shells for 150cc and Mirror, because there will be A LOT of them.

- Getting 3 stars on 50cc and 100cc may actually be tougher than on higher modes just because of the annoying low speed of this game, and you won't be able to dodge blue shells on these ones as a result of that.

- The graphics of this game on higher resolution screens are just so nauseating. I can't play this for too long, and that's probably the scenario for most of DS games here.

- The requirements for 3 stars aren't explained anywhere, but as for my experience, it's just a question of how fast you finish the Grand Prix, as well as finishing all races in 1st, of course.

Overall I had more fun with this game in the past. After experiencing so many different games and the craziness of 200cc in Mario Kart 8, this game just feels boringly slow.

done! had some issues getting one of the character & kart specific mirror cups to trigger but got there in the end

the Nintendo DS battle track can be cheesed by sitting on either side of ledges on the top screen next to the latch in the middle. should be a sweet spot that saves you from getting red shelled from CPUs driving down the speakers since they'll just throw them into the void

Here is a guide on how to get 3 stars on 150CC Cup & Mirror mode for those who struggled to get the achievements (credits to KirbyManiac from gamefaqs & GanonNess deep in the sticky topic):

Your GP rank is decided by 2 scores, your Championship Point (CP) and your Hidden Point (HP).

CP is the point given to you based on your rank in each race.

HP is a score that is hidden from the player, it's given based on how "well" you performed in the race starting from 0 HP, and according to what you did, points are added or deducted from your HP (it can also go below 0 based on your actions).

--------------- ACTIONS THAT ADD HP ---------------

-- Total Time for Each Race --
You will be awarded HP depending on how much faster your time is from the preset time.

-- Lead Time --
HP is given for been in 1st place. The longer you are in 1st, the more HP you receive.

-- Rocket Boost/Start --
(+25) HP for each successful Rocket Boost.

-- Mini-Turbo --
(+2) HP for each successful mini-turbo.

-- Item Attack --
(+5) HP for each successful attack using item.

--------------- ACTIONS THAT DEDUCT HP ---------------

-- Off-Track Time --
HP is deducted for the amount of time you spend off the track. The longer you are off-track, the more HP you loss. Exceptions are when you are under the effect of star, mushroom, bullet pill, or ghost(Boo).

-- Hit a Wall --
(-20) HP everytime you hit a wall.

-- Hit a Course Obstacle --
(-30) HP everytime you hit a course obstacle (car, fireball, etc.).

-- Fall Off Track/ Pick Up by Lakitu --
(-70) HP everytime you fall off track and get picked up by Lakitu.

--------------- SUMMARY ---------------

To get 3-star (***):

Get 1st place in all 4 races.
Finish the race as fast as possible.
Stay in the lead for as long as possible.
Don't go off-track unless you are using star, mushroom, bullet pill, or Boo(ghost).
Don't fall off the track.
Don't hit the wall or course obstacles.
It's OK to use item.

Finally got around to mastering this! This is honestly my favourite game in the whole series, and all of the Nitro tracks are incredibly fun and iconic. Most of the Retro tracks are great picks as well, aside from the glaring outlier of SNES Choco Island 2. Mission Mode was extremely fun to get 3 stars on, especially for the more challenging levels, so its such a shame that it was never introduced again in any other Mario Kart game.

Dealing with the AI was quite frustrating at times, since the rubber-banding in this game is really unforgiving, but I found it was still possible to beat them with enough skill and perseverance. It was also quite annoying finding out that the AI will specifically target you, to the point where they will attempt to throw red shells backwards to try and hit you instead of throwing them at the easy target in front.

Overall though, I highly recommend going through the entire achievement set if you are a fan of the Mario Kart games. It was really fun reliving the nostalgia of this game again.

It took 17 and a half hours to master. Oh man, this one was pretty tough; but I suppose it's pretty comparable to Double Dash in terms of difficulty. In that game you have some strict time trials, and the 'All Tracks' Grand Prix (man did I loathe that!); in this game you've got the annoyance of the ranking system, and the fun-sucking-abyss that is Battle Mode.

My main gripe with this set are the character/kart specific challenges. I wish they didn't require you to have completed the -entire game- beforehand in order to unlock the needed karts. It would have instead been nice if you could have tried those challenges the -first time- you attempted the cup (and maybe kill two birds with one stone if you managed to get a 3-Star rank with it). That needless repetition aside, the set was a load of fun; thank you! exceptbattlemodeholycowwhatawasteofmylife.

There should be a subset for beating the time trial ghosts. I feel like this is one of the few sets I've seen where I feel like something that should be required for 100% completion is not in the set.
