The longplay I saw had the guy jump back and kick to rapidly gain height up the hill, and as soon as he was near the top, he could get enough height to leap directly into the chimney. I could pull this off twice, but the third time I spent about a half hour trying unsuccessfully. Triple Jumping might be easier if it doesn't require exploiting the game's geometry. If anyone has a link to more detail, please let me know.
TristantineTheGreat 17 Oct 2023 10:39
Yeah, I saw the long play as well. Spent nearly an hour I think attempting to replicate it, but couldn't. I've personally never been good at glitching or exploits, so I may have to stop my playthrough here.

This game has some nice presentation and even some good ideas, but it desperately needs to be updated beyond the initial release. The 35-coin key doesn't save, you can't access one of the levels because talking to Hoot crashes the game, and there a lot of small glitches. Plus, a lot of the level design, most notably the haunted manor, seems to be built around using save states, which seems like a bad decision. I'm tempted to just reset my progress and play a different game, hopefully one that was tested before it was released.

A few bug fixes, aglab cam and infinite lives would definitely make it more enjoyable, but it's still manageable, with savestate training for most stars (especially if you're going blind).
To get into the cauldron level, I did a triple jump to get on the side on the roof (the gray part is not a slope), then another triple jump toward the chimney (second jump in the middle of the slope), and wall-kick + ledge-grab on the chimney. Good luck with the last cauldron, it's full of invisible walls and the moving platforms are buggy as hell...

Mindhral's comment got me on the right track to consider it, but I still didn't understand immediately. I did figure out a relatively easy solution, and decided I'd record it if others (like me) would prefer a visual reference: https://youtu.be/PhLNk7OHYtk

Basically, backwards somersault onto the lip of the roof (I find them easier than triple jumps, and it gives exactly enough height), tiptoe over to the cornet away from the chimney to give yourself enough distance, adjust the camera, and then you can triple jump right into the chimney. First jump in place, second start to move forward and up the slope and land about 2/3 up the slope to give yourself enough height, third jump right into the chimney, and it's possible that you'll have just enough height at the apex to fall right into the chimney.
Mindhral 18 Oct 2023 07:57
Nice, it's indeed much simpler that what I did and described! I didn't realize you could sideflip directly on that lower spot, or that you could triple jump directly on top lol
TristantineTheGreat 20 Oct 2023 12:00
Thanks Melo, after taking a break, I finally came back and made it into the chimney after a few tries. Too bad the cauldron level was abysmal. I got tired of Mario screaming every time I landed in the broth, and sometimes he'd fall through to the bottom of the cauldron. Luckily I finished the game, though RA seems to consider the cheevos from my last session as still locked for some reason. At least the minecart and UFO level were fun.

Wow, just realized the Halloween event is hard-core only. I literally got angry at this game for nothing lol. I am not doing this thing without save states. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Haunted Manor and Witch's Cauldron for the most part are fine...but there's one part in each level that REALLY brings it down in enjoyment. The blue platform that's high in the air and you need to either a wall jump, a backwards jump, or a triple jump on a small tiny platform above a bottomless pit is such hell. The final section in the Cauldron level with the whirlpool has such janky physics that more often then not you'll die from not landing on a platform. The terrible camera doesn't help either.

A small quality of life tip for those working on this. The key cannot be saved by grabbing another star after obtaining it, however, unlocking the door with the key CAN be saved. So get the key, unlock the door, then go get the Deadly Slide star. No more coin grinding required.

And mastered after 5 and a half hours. The hack has excellent geography with nice textures and everything, I enjoyed the way on how you access these levels. Unfortunately, this is heavily brought down by the high difficulty of most of the levels. 6 of the 8 levels were seemingly designed for veteran players of SM64 who know all the movement tricks. For casual players like me this was really frustrating to go through. The level themes themselves are alright, but most of them don't fit Halloween. The contrasting themes makes me think this hack should've been called "Horror Mayhem" instead.

Props to Sarconius' tip above, I never realized that but I wished I did lol.

Kaze makes Masterpieces. I want to get that out of the way, he is brilliant. This hack however, might be one of the absolute worst Mario hacks ever made that arent Kaizo. Not only are all but 2 levels annoyingly difficult even for Mario players who have beaten most of his hacks, The fact that you have to spent 5-10 minutes going through the unlock process for each level every time you game over, which will be frequent due to the extremely precise platforming required during these long levels, makes this just an absolutely atrocious grind

OK, I remastered this set for the Halloween event, and I'll give newcomers a general review of it.

Positives: Some cool level ideas (I like the Cauldron and Minecart levels the best), nice music remixes from other games well incorporated and arranged for the levels. The overall atmosphere is quite good and is appropriately Halloweeny.

Negatives: Buggy and clearly untested. The owl tree you need to get into Cauldron literally crashes the game so you have to cheese to get in. The Haunted Manor level is one of the worst hack levels I've ever seen. Some other annoying levels too but that one is egregiously bad. It has bad difficulty spikes and valleys, no sense of gradual difficulty increase at all.

Overall it's a middling to bad experience with brief bright spots; the hack feels very rushed.

For general tips, the biggest is (more a warning than a tip) if you do not have much Mario 64 experience and want to do this game for the event, do not bother. You need some level of skill in M64 or you will hate every second.
Next, I'd say Haunted Manor is by far the most difficult level, if you can do that you CAN beat this hack so don't get discouraged if you do that level but struggle on another.
For a couple levels (mainly the Tomb and Showdown) a good tip is if you hold Z down and jump you can continuously long jump without risking a crouch jump messup and that can be immensely helpful (especially on Tomb).
Next, to get into Cauldron you can either do a Triple Jump glitch or what I like to do, use the nearby slopes to get enough height and speed to jump into the chimney (kinda fun once you get the hang of it). And if you really struggle with anything super specific or are lost, there is a great YouTube longplay of the game of someone really good at this hack that is under a half hour.
Lastly, you need a Parallel Core for this, Mupen doesn't work.

Good luck to all newcomers, and play some of Kaze's actually good hacks after this to wash the taste out.

I have like 0 experience with more imporant M64 techs other than just beating the vanilla game with 120 stars a couple of times as a kid and I managed to beat this hack.

The Cauldron stage was by far the hardest for me just because of the final cauldron with the cheese spinning so fast!

A good tip I can give you for the manor is to unlock the level with the key and then beat a DIFFERENT level, like the slope (Doesn't matter if you already got the star before) So that the game can save and you don't have to gather the 35 coins to open it every time.

The only difficulty in the manor is 2 long jumps.
My suggestion to those is to release the stick before landing, this will make Mario stop all momentum at landing and just stop in place without sliding to his death.
The Pyramid is also harder than this level IMO

Mastered! It took me a little under two hours, which I can only attribute to Manor and Cauldrons, the rest being rather easy and jank-free
toddbstreams 2 Nov 2023 17:05
Mastery #24: Definitely got humbled a bit after being rusty with Mario 64. The difficulty was fun, though, and I liked the levels. The jank and being swallowed by geometry was a lot less fun (shoutouts to the first cog in the clock level). Appreciate the set, and I hope Kaze comes back to fix this one up some day.
ThePixelJunkie 18 Oct 2024 13:41
Looks like I missed the event last year but still ended up mastering this. I've only beaten a few Mario 64 hacks outside of mastering the OG game.

Man, this level design was just so annoying lmao. I've tried to give Mario 64 hacks a chance multiple times and I just hate it I think. SMW > SM64 hacks imo

Regardless, some cool ideas here. Many not so cool ideas. That owl crashing the game is just ridiculous. Of course it's tied to one of the most annoying levels in the hack.
Between this and trying Simpleflips Halloween Competition 2019 cheevos, think I'm good on Halloween hacks in general lol
