Fun game but obviously the controls can be a massive pain. There'd be times where I'd make a correct jump and I simply miss or just slip off the edge. Overall it's not too bad tbh. Hover glitch isn't needed but it comes in handy for later levels. I wish I knew it existed earlier lol
Kamikoopa 9 Jun 2022 00:50
I'm my own worse enemy. I have to master this because of the progress i have made, so right now It's just the completionist driving. As for the game, I genuinely wish the developers nothing but pain and misery. This is the most god awful game I have ever played. Horrible levels, bad design, bad camera, worse depth perception, speed runs, and so much more. Croc should be destroyed and removed from the earth. I won't even play Croc 2 because of this.
Kamikoopa 10 Jun 2022 01:32
Mastered. Best game I’ve ever played, highly recommended.
DistalSoul 28 Nov 2022 12:04
Fifth game mastered but first ps1 game. Fair set overall. The toughest challenge for me was 5-3 Trial on the Nile speed demon.
Golbi2654 13 Dec 2022 19:06
The PC version with a definitive mod is better. I wish RA would somehow support old PC games (even if they still don't support achievements on their Digital Distribution rereleases).

Done. That was a cool challenge. :D

It's a real pleasure to make the successes of this game, it forces you to really do everything, see everything about the game. On the other hand, the successes concerning the time records, it's much too hard. For what ? Because it is played each time to the nearest hundredth of a second. Not the right to make the slightest mistake or lose a second or two otherwise it's screwed. And since the timer also starts as soon as a level is loaded, this makes us lose almost 10 seconds....It's really not easy. Especially a game like Croc where the gameplay is horrible.
DistalSoul 1 Jul 2023 05:18
@ToxicNight you can increase the disc speed in your emulator’s settings which makes loading screens way shorter, giving you more time.
rvreq 1 Jul 2023 07:28
@ToxicNight You can also learn hover jump glitch and do easier skips with tanking first damage with gems.
sioneus 22 Nov 2023 23:28
this set breaks the Geneva Convention

i wish the speed demon acheivements werent a thing. it makes this game waaaaaaayy less enjoyable :(
kuwannu 20 Dec 2023 11:27
Mastered. Cool to play one of those games I might have touched a couple times as a kid on someone's computer but otherwise never got around to. Croc is fun, if frustrating. Most of the challenge comes from trying to do basic platforming with tank controls and a homocidal camera. Enemies aren't particularly inspired, the gimmicks are mostly just annoying and poorly conveyed, and the level design is restricted by the limitations of controlling Croc. At times I genuinely wondered why would you design a level like THIS why are you expecting THAT of me under THESE conditions what is wrong with you? Discount Yoshi himself is cute though, and I'm sure I'd have enjoyed this game much less if not for him and his noises.

You can power through the issues and develop something resembling proficiency with the gameplay, and handling this awkward control scheme with enough finesse to do the somewhat unreasonable things the game expects you to do for collectibles sometimes is certainly satisfying. It's rough around the edges to say the least, but if you're like me and you find 3D platformers compelling enough to 100% this game, you can handle the damageless boss fights and time trial achievements. You don't need to learn any speed tech or fiddle with emulator settings, they're balanced nicely as an experienced casual player's final exam for each of the game's stages. Some of the shorter and easier stages are a bit tight, but the hard ones have quite a bit of leeway. It all seemed quite fair to me.

But fuck those little guys with the projectiles that are everywhere in the lategame and usually positioned to be nearly impossible to avoid. I dislike them strongly.
WumpaGem 25 Dec 2023 22:58
The Speed Demon achievements should've been in its own subset.
Aros2k 9 Feb 2024 12:26
Never played this before (and certainly won't be going for all cheevos) but as a famously bad game, considering it was part of the very first wave of 3D platformers, it's surprisingly good. The short stages work a LOT better than the endless boring slogs that soon took over the genre.

With some control amendments, a better shadow for tracking your position and so on, there is actually the core of a very good game here IMO.

I'm quitting after the end of world one to avoid the parts where the game is actively not designed around the control scheme - but so far it has surprised me and I can certainly see why it did well.

Croc 2 should have kept this structure but improved the controls rather than changing everything and just being a rip off of the "work for 40 mins, fail and do it all again" awful n64 style games.
Aros2k 9 Feb 2024 12:37
Actually wow it's all one developer not knowing where to draw the line for designing a fun set. There should definitely be more training on what people do and don't want to see. Speed run challenges are so niche they should ALWAYS be a subset, unless they are easy enough to be fun and the comments here certainly indicate it's not the case. It's sadly, as usual, defended, rather than wiped off of the set or heavily amended. No cheevos should require emulation settings changing to be possible - for anyone who doesn't check the page they are just literally impossible without that trick, yet it's somehow agreed it's a good idea to have them lol.

ANY set where so few players bother to attempt more than the first couple of cheevos is a bad design and the few hardcore players who argue it's good design do so much damage here when they want to be one of a handful to complete a set. I've got cheevos where I am the only player to get them and I still think it's bad set design. Anything that makes people nope out and quit is not a good thing, and anyone reading these comments not followed up with "all the time cheevos have been removed/had +0:15 added" won't bother.

It's just a shame as a great set would make even an average game like this something very fun and worth playing through for the completion. And isn't the point of RA to make people play more of and get more out of the retro titles we all love?
Schengo 25 Mar 2024 11:49
Good set in my opinion! But let's give a standing ovation to the game's camera and controls – an absolute gem
Nabas6545 29 Mar 2024 19:11
I know the Speed Demon achievements are contentious, but I recently revamped the demonstration videos I made to show how they can be achieved without needing to use the jump hover glitch. Each island now has its own video, so if anyone is struggling with a particular level and wants to see a successful run you can find them all in the following playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfZbxnFekfWiCQHT6Lsb8z4sxvJIJWqya

I owed this one to the little me. One of my favorites when I was little. It's funny to play it again today and think how a platformer with tank controls is one of the worst ideas ever, but I have very special feelings about it. The set is great, but the speedrunning ones do feel like they really need the tweaking in loading times in the emulator. You can't have the game taking almost 10 seconds to load a level and that time counting for the cheevo, I don't know if it's truly possible like that. I'm not opposed to speedrunning cheevos, but this must be at least clearer. And I feel like the points are too low on this. Some of these were really hard and deserved to be 50 points.

Finally, completed this nonsense! After trying to collect the gobbos until the game glitches out and I have to play the game normally on duckstation doing the speed demon and boss battles no damages, I have to started playing the game again at the beginning to the end once more in retroarch of course, and it takes me about an couple of days and MONTHS to get there, and thank goodness I finally got here!
