Having loved Duelist of the Roses, I was a little apprehensive of the prequel's reputation for being brutal and having a bigger grind- which was impressive considering that DotR wasn't exactly grind free. Overall, doing research is practically a requirement once you make headway into the campaign. Fusing into Flame Cerberus, Crimson Sunbird, and B. Dragon Jungle King were things I learned on my own, but I had no clue about how to get a monster with more than 2300 atk for ages. Learning about Twin-headed Thunder Dragon got me through the early Mages, but I had only really been getting POW as TEC is incredibly tedious to grind out, and had practically no real magic cards besides field spells. Using a second save to help trade in some spells from other starter decks feels like a requirement unless you want to spend dozens of hours grinding out spell cards. I was pretty lucky with my drops though, got a Meteor Dragon first try against Meadow Mage.

It was pretty fun to learn the fusions and tackle opponents, but the strategy aspect of the game feels like it breaks down after the Mages. Getting anything in my hand that could handle Blue Eyes Ultimate felt like winning a lottery, and losing half the time to rng makes it planning feel worthless. I was able to do all the rituals quickly thanks to Simon in free duel; consistently got 3 ritual summons a duel. For the fusion achievements, I found a fusion calculator online for helping keep track of what I could fuse since a lot of the fusions I had no clue about, having stuck mostly to just a few bread and butter types for my playtime.

If you want to master this set, you're going to have to get really familiar with the wiki and research a bunch in order to know who drops what cards, how to spend star chips, and what cards fuse for the achievements. Overall it doesn't feel super well nuanced and having to spend so much time grinding only for mostly useless drops is not very fun. Cool to see what came before DotR tho.

Can someone please help me? I’ve never disabled Hardcore Mode on RetroArch and I never use save states. But out of nowhere, my achievements are now registering as Softcore. I’m currently at 63 out of 200. I tried resetting the Softcore achievements and replaying the same duel, but they still register as Softcore. I haven’t used any cheats or anything similar. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

It’s possible you’re using an unsupported emulator which forces you into soft core. This started April 1st.

I can confirm that this is the issue @MajinWamu

I've downloaded the standalone DuckStation for Android and the hardcore mode is working again.

Finally mastered it. Gotta say a set where you have to earn every card available in the game would be welcome. Considering you can't 100% collect cards it would be good to get as many as legit possible.

Why are there missable campaign achievements? Isn't it supposed to restart the campaign with the same cards when you finish the game, so they're not missable?

It still counts as missable as if you don't do it, then save, you can't go back to it without starting a new playthrough. The existence of a NG+ cycle where you get a second chance doesn't negate the fact it can be locked out of.

It took me about 9 months to master this.... Everyone was sound up until the big three.. Getting the Blue Eyes was horrendous and getting the Gate Guardian Pieces i think i just got lucky, but this took some extreme levels of self discipline and burn out avoidance. Then i had to get at that point, 100 cards for 600... I mainly completed this with the help of the site YugiohFM and a mix of drops and starchip grinding. Not horribly hard, but such a tease after getting those previous 6 cards...

So so so so so super relieved to have finally mastered this though.. My gooooodness.

I came here fearful I'll see people just praising this game as a hidden gem or a masterpiece...

Glad to see this is pretty hated even by the masters. It's pretty terrible What sucks is Yu-gi-oh is a fantastic series, and the card game is great, but man... This one is rough. (Ok the original Yu-gi-oh decks were... not great, but not as bad as this)

Mastered. Thank God I'm now free to go back to the good yugioh games. Yeah it's a nostalgic game from my childhood, but I swear I'm never touching this game ever again in my life.

Honestly this game isn’t bad had it had all the cards available realistically and the ai didn’t cheat.

I've kinda just given up about the sheer amount of rage this site has against games that don't deserve it, but some things are still pretty frustrating. The earlier YGO games will never be appreciated, will they? Feels bad. Strange to see Reshef get more respect than FM these days. Also strange to see all the rage about 2004, but I guess that's what NT is for.

I just wanna say that speedrunners love this game for a reason, and FM isn't like other video games where speedrunning is wildly different from playing it normally. If you can beat the game or even master this set, you already have a lot of the knowledge required to speedrun it. Of course, maybe the FM speedrunners should try Reshef.

Trying to master sets can certainly burn you out for the most part. Sometimes it’s best to take breaks. Not mastering a set is not a form of failure. Achievements are created to have fun, so there isn’t a reason to force yourself. I eventually mastered this game, but I didn’t do it all at once, I did it over a course of several years. I came back to it when I was in the mood and missed the game. The sets are here whenever people need them, they aren’t going anywhere unless they are poorly built. I suggest to take your time, enjoy yourself, don’t stress yourself.

Anyways, Capsule Monster Coliseum is probably one of my favorite games.

Several years to master a game is kind of tough xD YuGiOh FM is hard... but you is not that hard.
1. Farm dragon, thunder, water.
2. Get at least 2 Umi.
3. The rest is just grinding against strong duelist.
4. Finish the game.
