This shouldn’t happen! This website should be inclusive when it comes to games it is going to keep, not exclusive! There should be a precedence for keeping achievements for games that that were officially released for the first time on a system that emulates an older system to play them achievable on an emulator for that older system! Especially if they are added to the site before the system they were officially released on is even supported!
sandro4912 3 Nov 2024 11:59
Master Quest was never released on n64.
Cardboard 4 Nov 2024 11:05
Alright, I finished going through the 5 stages of grief. did some research. From what I could find, master quest was never even developed for the n64. It was originally made to show off the n64dd. By the time it was done the n64dd was already failing. That version of the game was never released. It was later downgraded to run as a n64 game so that it could run on the gamecube using the same system developed to run oot.
Cardboard 4 Nov 2024 11:08
I was under the impression this released in japan in some form for the n64. But it was released for the gamecube the same way as it was in America.
xmarkwx 17 Nov 2024 00:39
Very clumsy to change systems for a game. If it runs on an N64 emulator, as it always has, of course this is an N64 rom. Whether it was released officially or whatever is not very relevant; there are many protos, hacks, and homebrew on this site. Just add a label to indicate this.

If there should, in addition, also be an entry for the official GCN release, fine. Why anyone would want to use a GCN emulator to run an N64 emulator is beyond me, but to have the option won’t hurt.

But to remove this game from N64 as if this rom never existed is very strange and needlessly causes people trouble. Fact is there is a GCN release and an N64 rom file, both of which are perfectly acceptable on RetroAchievements and should not be removed for arbitrary reasons.
Sefler 19 Nov 2024 00:36
Why not add the GCN version but leave the N64 version as a hack/homebrew?
GoombaGoo 19 Nov 2024 19:39
+1 for leaving as a n64 hack and making an identical GC set

Adding my +1 in favor of keeping this on N64 for inclusivity reasons. I really can't understand why we'd want to force players to run an emulator in an emulator when it's not necessary. I'd be in favor of either a duplicated set for GCN, or the development of an entirely unique set. Plenty of games have multiple versions across different consoles. Just slap an "Unlicensed" tag on this version and make the GCN version use a separate set.
Olboll 23 Nov 2024 06:27
+1 ^

I don’t see why that would be a problem when we have ps2 and GameCube sets of the same game
(The SpongeBob movie game, Simpsons Hit and Run etc.)

There needs to be some blanket consistency on this site for stuff like this I think. The same can be said for the Pokémon sets sometimes being seperate and other times being linked.
KettleClog 24 Nov 2024 13:03
from all the comments it seems pretty much EVERYONE (including myself) is unhappy about the set switching to the GCN version.... So why change it when literally no one wants it to change?
xmarkwx 24 Nov 2024 16:00
The official reason is you can’t have a single hash assigned to two sets (on different platforms) on RetroAchievements as it messes with the logic of the system. However, all one needs is to provide a patch that doesn’t change anything but a byte in the header info to generate a new hash. The patched file can then be linked to this N64 entry, and the original to GCN. No need at all to just remove one of the two as if this isn’t actually an N64 rom that many like to play on an N64 emulator.

I hope this alternative solution will be considered even though it seems people have already made up their minds.
TheSilverLeaf79 29 Nov 2024 02:49
Shame my controller broke 5 achievements away from mastering the set.
yaguarasu 2 Dec 2024 18:27
anybody know whether they're still planning to outright remove compatibility with the N64 emulation of this game? have been going through it relatively slowly due to the water temple being kind of a drag lol (master quest may not have been the best version to choose for the first time playing this game, but the choice has been made... so). already had to restart my save once as a result of losing the first one upon getting a new PC. would really rather not have to either rush to finally beat it in under 2 weeks, nor restart it just to be able to gain achievements.

if they are, it's... whatever, it seems they will be going through with it despite the outcry, can't do anything about this other than the prior two personally undesired options available, and simply just continuing to play without getting achievements anymore once december 15th comes to pass, which... just really sucks, to be frank; achievements are fulfilling.
SporyTike 2 Dec 2024 19:01
It is still planned to be moved, but as I said enough times I am open for reasonable hold off. I am not in a rush with this, so if the last two users want more time, I can even extend it to 1st January. But that would be my final extend to allow them finish off. Would still require some work from you guys, but since you really try to just beat the game and don't waste time complaining much, I am willing to help you out. Let me know if any of you is interested to delay it by 2 more weeks.
JD931 3 Dec 2024 03:27
That's disappointing.
xmarkwx 4 Dec 2024 22:14
SporyTike, why not just patch the N64 ROM to generate a new supported hash? The current hash can be linked to GCN as proposed, but this entry would still remain with the patched rom linked. It wouldn’t change anything other than some meaningless byte just to get a different hash, so all people have to do is patch their file and they can keep on playing—new players or those who have already made progress, doesn’t matter. Then everybody can be happy and choose how they like to play for themselves.
SporyTike 4 Dec 2024 23:03
Before doing such claims saying that this solves issues, please make sure you are actually knowing what you are talking about. Doing false claims just result into disappointing people, upsetting them and putting devs in a situtation they need to clearify why they simply can't do the proposed "solution". There are two main points in your comments that are simply wrong. First of all, the GCN version already generates a completely different hash than the N64 version. there is no need to do some kind of patch to get a usable hash since the hashing is not even an issue. Secondly, I already mentioned that I would have liked to support both versions but simply can't because the emulators refuse to load a set for a console if the hash is from a different one (so loading the N64 hash will instantly throw an error and saying achievements get disabled since a different platform was detected).
To be honest, I read every single comment and DM on that matter but ignore them because it seems like 90% of the people didn't even bother to completely read my post about it why this change is made and I am getting tired of repeating myself and hearing people providing ideas that I already stated why they don't work. For your particular suggestion, I am unsure if you didn't actually read into it or I was lacking information that this suggestion is not possible, so I want to make it clear that I can't support the N64 version due to emulator limitations. If I could, I would love to support it and if in the future there would be a way to support it, I would happy to add it back. For now, it is simply impossible and I know people are upset, but I am ignoring them on purpose for my own sanity. I already get enough hate for this change - which again must be done due to how our site rules are and how the base of this platform works - and I am the one that accept this work and the incoming hate with it.

Anyway, these are my final words about this again.
xmarkwx 8 Dec 2024 19:00
SporyTike thanks for your response, then I think I am just not understanding your explanation. You state that “ hashing is not even an issue,” but then right thereafter that you “would have liked to support both versions but simply can't because the emulators refuse to load a set for a console if the hash is from a different one (so loading the N64 hash will instantly throw an error and saying achievements get disabled since a different platform was detected).”

What am I missing here? Consider this:
Two entries on RA, one GCN with one unique hash, one N64 with another unique hash. Both have the same achievements, sure but the platforms, entries, and hashes are different. It’s like any other multi platform release really.

I don’t really understand what you’re saying about the emulator throwing an error when loading a hash from a different console. Why would you even want to do that anyway? To avoid exactly that I proposed the solution of creating a unique hash per platform. Now you’re saying they were already unique to begin with. Then what is the issue? Sorry if I’m too dumb to understand your explanation but seemingly I am not the only one.
SporyTike 8 Dec 2024 19:11
The issue is that by our standards we are not allowed to have a set for the N64 version because there does not exist an official N64 version. The known N64 hash is just the rom found in the GCN game extracted to make it work in just an N64 emulator, but our rules forbid extracting games from collections to make sets for them. Back in the day this was an exception because GCN was not even planned to happen at all, now however we have it so the set must be ported over - resulting in no N64 page, but a GCN page (in practice it is just me adjusting achievement logic and changing the game's console ID so nobody loses progress)
What I mean with "I would love to support N64 but can't since the emulator throws an error" is that we can only assign one console to a game entry, which will soon be GCN for this game. With admin tools it is technically possible to add an N64 hash to a GCN entry after porting this over but as soon you would try to load the N64 game the emulator would give an error saying you can't load a set of a different console than what your game is from, and then shuts down the emulator.
