🎫 Welcome to Challenge League 2024 - Ticket to the Universe! 🎫

Pack your bags and bring a controller as we explore the landscape of retro gaming.
This event uses a "Choose Your Own Adventure" style where you get to choose the games that you play so long as they fit within the theme of the board. It also features community goals that will unlock power ups and other bonuses to aid you on your journey!

Each month will feature a new map with multiple nodes and paths between the nodes, similar to a railroad system which connects station nodes with paths of railway. Each board will host a theme for the month with challenges related to that theme. Players will be given a starting point and a goal. In order to complete the board, they must reach the goal node. Some maps may have the same starting point/goal while others may have randomized starting points/goals.

Once a board is revealed at the start of the month, it can be played at any point for the remainder of the year. Every 3 months, a break month will be added to give players time to catch up on previous boards, however, there may still be an opportunity to earn a power up during those months!

To aid you on your journey, power ups and shortcuts can be earned by completing community challenges on each board. Power ups may only be used on the board group in which they are earned. This means that powerups obtained on boards 1-3 can only be used on boards 1-3. Same with those earned on boards 4-6 and boards 7-9.
🎟️ Ticket Reroller - Replaces your existing starting point and destination with a new one.
🚉 Station Skipper - Allows you to skip a node without completing its objective.
⏱️ Chrono Trigger - Allows you to roll back time and complete a node using a game you've already beaten.
🏆 Mastery Token - Allows you to skip a node by mastering a game.
🗝️ Skeleton Key - Guarded by fiendish villains, this special key unlocks a shortcut on an upcoming map.
🎖️ Medal of Commendation - Awarded for acts of service, this special item unlocks a shortcut on an upcoming map.

Group 1 - All participants will start with one 🎟️Ticket Reroller and one 🚉 Station Skipper to get them started.
Group 2 - All participants will start with one 🎟️Ticket Reroller and one ⏱️ Chrono Trigger to get them started.
Group 3 - All participants will start with one 🎟️Ticket Reroller and one 🏆 Mastery Token to get them started.

Participants that clear at least 3 boards will earn a 🥉 Bronze event badge! Badge upgrades are available for completing 6 boards (🥈 Silver) and 9 boards (🥇Gold).

General Rules:
📌 Players may play any unlocked boards in any order they choose.
📌 Gamer tasks submitted for one challenge cannot be reused for another challenge. Some powerups may override this rule.
📌 Developer tasks completed for one board may be used on a different board.
📌 Low effort/free points games are not eligible for credit unless specified.
📌 For hub related challenges, the game must be in the hub to be eligible. If the game fits the hub, add it to improve the site! Hub addition requests can be sent to the #site-cleanup-forum in Discord.
📌 The progression system will be used to determine “Beat” conditions for each game. If a set does not have progression, raise it to the event team for investigation.
📌 If a player has completed all the possible goals for a challenge, they will receive free credit.
📌 Achievements earned or games beaten/mastered any time after the challenge is revealed may be used to complete challenges. You may use a game you started before the challenge was announced as long as you have not yet completed the task. Resetting a single achievement to use as credit for beating or mastering a game is not allowed.
📌 Players must submit challenge completions to the forum topic for validation.
📌 One Alt account is allowed. Please declare it when you first use it.
📌 All achievements must be earned in Hardcore mode, as required by other community events.

Having conquered all the challenges laid before you, the Challenge League welcomes you into their ranks with open arms. In celebration of your accomplishments, a victory tour of the RetroAchievements Events islands is held to introduce you to the other RA events. Visit the islands to learn more about their local customs! On behalf of the Events Team, thank you for joining us on this journey through time and space!

Theme: RA Events
Node Challenge: Complete a node on the board by clearing the challenge associated with each event.
Special Rule: Earning Proof of Legend allows you to freely pass through nodes that you’ve already cleared. Scott’s Cap also developed additional paths that can be used to move between nodes!
Starting Point: Random Node
Goal: Travel to your destination node after passing through your midpoint node.
Community Goal: When the community reaches 50 gold badges and when the community reaches 400 board 9 nodes cleared, a special announcement about the future of Challenge League will be unlocked!

📌 Each node has a unique challenge related to each event.

📌 Once you clear a node, you can freely pass through that node again thanks to the Proof of Legend.
📌 Free point games are allowed for Peak Streak and April Fool’s Day nodes. Standard rules apply to the other nodes.

Group 1 - Previously Released Boards

We've met the Community Goal for Board 1 and Board 2! All participants have been given two 🎟️ Ticket Reroller and two 🚉 Station Skipper for this achievement. All participants have also been given a mysterious old 🗝️key which Bowser and Ganon hid for safe keeping.

Power ups may only be used on the board group in which they are earned. This means that powerups obtained on boards 1-3 can only be used on boards 1-3. Same with those earned on boards 4-6 and boards 7-9. This change is to allow more flexibility in the types of powerups and maps in later sections of the event. It will also ensure that later challenges do not need to be extended to account for participants hoarding power ups all year and turning them in for a free pass on Board 9. Where in the world is Mario? Bowser has invaded Earth, but Mario is nowhere to be found. It’s up to you to find Mario and put a stop to Bowser’s evil plans. The invitation you received in the mail contained a special ticket that allows you to travel across the globe. The ticket recharges each time you beat a game, but each station master will only accept a particular genre! Start your journey at the station closest to you, or start at a random location provided by the event team. Reach your destination to rescue Mario! You can also take on Bowser yourself in his secret castle in Antarctica…

Board Theme: Genres
Node Challenge: Beat any game from the node’s genre OR Develop a game from the node’s genre
Starting Point: Players may begin near their home country or be given a random starting point
Goal: Travel to a random node given to you by the event team.
Side Quest Bowser has hidden a skeleton key in his secret castle in Antarctica. Pass through this node to pick up the key! It may help you on a future board… The side quest can be completed before or after clearing the board.
Community Bonus: 50 players pass through Antarctica OR Beat 100 Mario Games.
Rewards: Unlocks 1x Ticket Reroller and 1x Station Skipper for all participants. All participants acquire Bowser’s Skeleton Key.

Board Notes
📌 A mysterious portal has appeared in Greenland that can take you right to Bowser’s Castle in Antarctica. The portal can be used to travel both to and from Antarctica.
📌 Only one Skeleton Key can be earned on this board. Clearing both the side quest and the community bonus will not grant additional keys.
📌 You must beat a game on both the starting and destination nodes, in addition to the nodes in between.
📌 When backtracking to a node you cleared earlier, you must beat another game in that genre.

⚔️February - Heroes Assemble!⚔️

After defeating Bowser at his castle in Antarctica, you step into the warp portal to return home. You emerge from the portal and find yourself in a strange land with a large tower in its center, shrouded in darkness. Princess Zelda has asked you to raise an army to assault Ganon in his tower. She provides you with a magical train that recharges each time you beat a game, but only if you recruit a specific type of hero! Start your journey at a random location provided by the event team. Reach your destination to recruit the legendary Hero of Retro and return to Ganon’s Tower to stop him! Or you can team up with friends to take him on yourself.

Board Theme:

Node Challenge: Beat any game featuring a protagonist that matches the node OR Develop a game featuring a protagonist that matches the node
Starting Point: Players will be given a random starting point
Goal: Travel to a random node given to you by the event team and then return to Ganon's Tower (Wildcard) at the center of the map.
Side Quest: Ganon holds another skeleton key, but has secluded himself in his tower. Unlock access to his chamber by restoring power to the four temples in Hyrule. This can be done by restoring power to each temple by clearing its node.
The temples are located on the following nodes:

💧 Water Temple - Knight Node

You may split your quest with up to 3 additional event participants, allowing each party member to tackle a different temple. Each participant may only join one party. The side quest can be completed before or after clearing the board.

March - Assault on the Dark Castle

After assembling an army of heroes, you and the Hero of Retro face off against Ganon’s forces outside his tower. Ganon’s defeat turns the tide of battle to your favor, but something doesn’t feel right. Zelda calls on the Triforce of Wisdom to unseal a veil surrounding the tower. As the veil breaks away, the tower transforms into a fortress of darkness: Dracula’s Castle! Creatures of all shapes and sizes pour out of the castle. While your forces hold them at bay, it’s up to you to sneak into the castle. Find the legendary Vampire Killer and put an end to the castle’s dark master.

Node Challenge: Beat any game with a theme that matches the node OR Develop a game featuring a theme that matches the node
Starting Point: Players will be given a random starting point
Goal: Travel to a random node given to you by the event team and then defeat Dracula in his throne room (Wildcard) at the top of the map.

Side Quest: Every chamber of the castle contains a host of demons, creatures, and fearsome beasts. In order to pave the way for your forces, clear out as many of the rooms as you can on your way to Dracula’s Throne room. Station Skippers will not contribute to this side quest, but may be used to travel through a room undetected.
Rewards: Participants that clear out the most rooms by the end of April will influence a future map and its challenges.

Board Notes
📌 The skeleton keys collected from Bowser and Ganon can be used to unlock Warp rooms in the Castle. Warps may travel to any other warp zone, but require a game beat to use. Free points are allowed to charge the warps.
📌 After clearing a room of monsters, you may freely backtrack through that room. You do not need to clear that node again.
📌 Related themes and series in a hub are eligible for the main hub. For example,

Updating Game Hubs
📌 When a game needs to be added to a hub, please add all relevant hub info like missing genres, themes, perspective, protagonists etc; along with adding all the necessary language hubs that are supported on the listed hash(s).
📌 All hub update submissions should list the hub numbers, separated by a comma.
📌 Do not bloat the page with unnecessary hubs. The page should not have both 'Platforming, 2D Platforming' or 6 different protagonist hubs listed.
📌 Try to use the existing hubs. If there is a strong argument for creating a new hub, please it can be put under consideration.
📌 If anything is unclear, please ask an Events or Cleanup team member for clarification.

After a harrowing battle against Dracula, the victorious heroes gathered in a jubilant celebration. Amidst the revelry, you stumble upon a hidden hangar in the catacombs of the castle. Inside you find a crimson airship with a sleek design and features suggesting that it is capable of space travel! On the command deck, you notice a distress signal hailing from General Pepper: “It’s about time you showed up. You’re the only hope for our world!” You strap in and blast off towards Corneria to save the citizens of the Lylat System.

Theme: Series
Node Challenge: Beat one of the selected games from 3 random series OR Develop a game from those series. Ports of the selected games are also eligible for credit! Venom is a Wildcard, allowing you to choose any of the selected games.
Starting Point: All players begin at Corneria. Corneria is already safe thanks to the efforts of Star Fox.
Goal: Travel to Venom while responding to distress signals in five planets along the way.

Side Quest: Star Fox needs your help! Andross sent the Star Wolf team to Corneria in response to the destruction of his base on Venom. After completing your initial goal, return to Corneria by beating six additional games of your choice from any of the featured series. Completing this mission will award the Corneria Medal of Commendation, which may help you on a future board.

Community Bonus: Beat all games from each of the series.
Rewards: Unlocks 1x Ticket Reroller and 1x Chrono Trigger for all participants. All participants will receive the Cornerian Medal of Commendation.

Board Notes
📌 If you have beaten all five of the selected games in a series, you earn free credit for that node.
📌 Ports of a game can be submitted for credit. You cannot complete multiple ports of the same game for Wildcard credit. Feel free to ask if you are unsure about a game counting.
📌 Corneria is already safe and does not need to be cleared. It does need to be cleared when returning during the side quest.
📌 Venom is a Wildcard node, meaning you can choose any of the eligible games.

Although successful in rescuing the Lylat System, the battle against Andross and his forces severely damaged the Ragnarok. After surveying the damage, Slippy Toad recommends traveling to Ivalice, a world where brilliant minds and master engineers call home. Upon arrival, you seek out engineers that can help repair your ship and upgrade its systems. During your travels, you hear rumors of a mysterious artifact in the Airship Graveyard protected by the High Seraph, Ultima…

Theme: Hacks & Homebrews
Node Challenge: Recruit at least 3 engineers to upgrade your Airship. To recruit an engineer, you must travel to a nation’s capital by beating OR developing a Homebrew game at each minor node along the way. Each node requires a homebrew from a specific set of systems.
When you reach a capital, you must beat or dev a hack in one of the assigned categories to acquire their upgrade. Each engineer requires a hack that fits a specific theme or series.
Once you’ve recruited your 3 engineers, return to the Airship Graveyard and defeat Ultima by beating any hack of your choice to obtain the Magitek Relic.
Starting Point: Players may begin at any nation of their choosing.
Goal: Travel to the Airship Graveyard after recruiting all 3 of their rolled engineers.

Side Quest: Recruit all 6 engineers by visiting each nation. You may team up with 1 other participant to complete this task. You may do this quest before or after confronting Ultima. Completing this mission will award the Ivalice Medal of Ingenuity, which may help you on a future board.

Community Bonus: 50 participants successfully clear the side quest.
Rewards: Unlocks 1x Ticket Reroller and 1x Chrono Trigger for all participants. All participants will receive the Ivalice Medal of Ingenuity.

July - Wings of Time

To celebrate the upcoming launch of GameCube games on RA, you may swap ANY of your Board 6 rolls to GameCube (one time only). This is in addition to the swaps allowed via the medals. Get excited!

With the help of the engineers and scientists, your airship is fully repaired and ready for the next leg of the journey! In addition to the repairs, the engineers also discovered that the Magitek relic found at the Airship Graveyard can make the airship capable of time travel! After saying goodbye to the crew, you blast off into space and open a rift in time.
While exploring the timeline far into the future, you come across a small island suspended above a void inhabited by a single person. After docking your ship, you approach the man who explains that a primal entity known as Lavos is threatening to destroy the timeline and must be stopped. Before you can face Lavos, the timeline must be restored!

Theme: Console Generations
Node Challenge: Restore a random console from each of the console generations by beating OR developing a game from that system. Once you’ve restored a game from each generation, return to the End of Time and defeat Lavos to restore the timeline.
Starting Point: Any generation
Goal: Defeat Lavos after restoring each of the console generations from 2nd to 7th.

Side Quest: Each generation has a number of different systems that are eligible for each node. In order to fully restore the timeline, restore as many unique consoles as you can from each generation. Chrono Triggers will not contribute to this side quest, but may be used to clear the main quest
Rewards: Participants that clear out the most rooms by the end of August will influence a future map and its challenges. Note: This is the same reward as the Board 3 side quest. Participants that did a full clear in March will not receive additional rewards.

Console Generations

September - Ticket to RetroAchievements

After defeating Lavos, you approach the hooded man in the End of Time and he points towards a portal you hadn’t noticed earlier. As you step into the portal, the man removes his hat and cloak and exclaims “Welcome to the World of RetroAchievements!” Scott explains that he created this land over 10 years ago to give special players such as you a place to train and share their love of games with others. He challenges you to collect badges to prove your prowess and to challenge one of the RA Legends.

Since we are at the start of the final group of boards, everyone begins with 1x Ticket Reroller and 1x Mastery Token. Mastery tokens are used to complete any node requirement by mastering a set of your choice (non-free points/low effort). These are only usable on the final 3 boards.

Theme: RA Developers
Node Challenge: Earn badges by beating a game developed by a gym leader OR developing a game on their wishlist. Once you’ve earned 4 badges, defeat a RA Legend to become a RA Master.
Starting Point: Random Gym
Goal: Earn at least 4 badges, including your starting and destination badge, and defeat your assigned RA Legend.
Side Quest: Earn all 8 badges and defeat Scott in Mt. Silver to earn Scott’s Cap.

Community Goal: Earn each badge 25 times.
Rewards: Unlocks 1x Ticket Reroller and 1x Mastery Token for all participants. All participants acquire Scott’s Cap.

📌 Only 1 of the 3 developers in the gym needs to be defeated. You may choose any game that the developer has worked on (even if only 1 achievement).

October - Challenge League Legends

Following your battle with Scott, he adjusts his hat with a smirk. “You’re exactly the type of person we need.” He opens a portal leading to Retro City, home of the Challenge League, a group of individuals dedicated to taking on new challenges for games long forgotten. Prove you’re worthy of joining the league by taking on new challenges created by the League legends of boards past!

Theme: Community Created Challenges
Node Challenge: Complete a node on the board by clearing the challenge described. If the challenge requests a specific achievement you already have, it is a free node.
Goal: Complete 2 lines on your randomly assigned board to clear the board. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.
Side Quest: Complete 4 rows to earn a Proof of Legend.

Community Goal: Complete all 200 tasks created by the Challenge League Legends.
Rewards: Unlocks 1x Ticket Reroller and 1x Mastery Token for all participants. All participants acquire Proof of Legend.

Board Notes
📌 Each node in your roll includes a Node Number (1 through 16) which correspond to the nodes on the board.
📌 The task identifier (A0 through T8) can be used to identify the task on the community board.
📌 Lines may be earned by clearing all the tasks in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line.
📌 Once you clear a node, you can use that node again when working on a different line.
📌 Try to discover as many tasks as you can as a community! The events team will help out once most of the rolls have been handed out.
📌 Any participant can contribute to the community board. You do not need to have a task on your board to complete it.
📌 Mastery tokens can be used to clear an individual task, but they cannot be used to clear the community board.
