Scott's Introduction
Apr 17, 2013 6:11 PM
Hey I'm Scott, I started the RetroAchievements project back in September 2012. The idea came to me after spending far too much time drooling over the stats and graphs on TrueAchievements.com, a fantastic Xbox 360 achievement aggregator-slash-fansite. Given that emulators are free (generally?) and ROMs are non-costing (provided you have the original games in the attic, which I'm sure we all do), it seemed like a natural progression.
Here's a little self FAQ.
I got my Mega Drive as a Christmas present roughly 20 years ago, and fell in love with Sonic 1, challenging myself to complete it from start to finish without dying, as fast as I could, collecting all the emeralds. I don't think I ever managed it! I vaguely remember getting a GameBoy the year before that, with Nigel Mansell's World Championship, Tetris and Super Mario Land. I remember a few years later getting a Game Genie for both Mega Drive and GameBoy and being fascinated that I could change the code to make something else happen, and starting messing around with BASIC on my Dad's Commodore 64. Fast-forward to 7 years ago I took a degree in Computer Games Programming and followed a dream of becoming a games programmer!
These days I am a games programmer by profession, and RetroAchievements is a project I run in my spare time. I don't offer guaranteed support but I will help any way I can if you have a problem. If you have any comment, query, suggestion or just want to rant, feel free to send me a message either here on the forums, on the wiki, via email (Scott at retro achievements dot org) or just yell at your monitor, I'm sure I'll hear if you yell loud enough :P

Hey Scott, I only became aware of the site a few days ago but am loving what you've done so far. It's so refreshing to play these games all over again with new achievements. I get so much joy out of it and have fast become bored of chasing achievements on current gen consoles.
The Mega Drive is one of my favourite consoles of all time, I still remember being blown away by the free Altered Beast bundled with the first one I owned, and that was just Altered Beast, a titled that was absolutely torn to shreds by reviewers back then! I soon moved on to Revenge Of Shinobi, Strider, Castle Of Illusion, Sonic etc... Obviously the Streets Of Rage series is another favourite! Two Crude Dudes, DeCapAttack...
Would be great to get Master System and Mega CD support in time.

I can't believe how few of those I've played! Everyone talks fondly of Shinobi but I've never really gotten into it :S I've heard of Decap Attack and Strider, but never played either of them :(
I never saw the attraction of Altered Beast, but I first played it right at the end of the console's lifespan, and it had already aged considerably! I thought the magazines loved it? Especially just as it came out, im sure I remember it being described as a "system seller" when it was released, for its "perfect" arcade conversion. I guess there wasn't much else you could compare it to back then? :P

Thank you so much for your work on this project. I have been hoping someone would attempt to tackle an achievement system for a classic console. It has been a fun way to re-acquaint myself with these games and I keep checking back on the site to see what else has been added to the list.

Super Punch Out on the SNES is awesome! I love the series, just recently been getting into the wii version at last! Would love to play through Super Mario World and Mario Kart with achievements. A Link To The Past also!
With RAGens having Mega CD support I'd love to see Final Fight CD up on here soon!

Nice :) Mario Kart with achievements sounds good :) hopefully we're not far off the first release of RASnes9x! One of the milestones of gamer achievement is definitely completing Super Mario World to 100% completion, same with collecting all the energy capsules/missiles in Super Metroid :P
