THIS EVENT HAS CONCLUDED. Thank you for your participation! I've updated the leaderboard with the final results, please let me know ASAP if you believe there are any errors. Badges will be awarded soon. Keep an eye on your RA inbox in the near future for a survey to share your input on the design of future seasons.

How It Works
With the help of community suggestions, I have compiled a list of 50 types of “distractions”. These are daily challenges designed to encompass a wide variety of what is possible on RetroAchievements. Most are gaming focused, but some explore other areas such as art and creative writing. Each distraction is active for 24 hours and worth 1 point on the leaderboard.
I generate each new distraction by using random.org to first select the category, then the specific randomized parameters. I only interfere with the randomization when the outcome feels excessively challenging or is overly similar to a recent distraction. For the most part, we are all at the whim of RNG.
To participate, all you have to do is post in the thread with some sort of proof that you have completed the currently active distraction. For most distractions, linking to your Daily History page is sufficient. If you aren’t sure how to access this, copy the URL from another comment and change their username to your own. Please make a new post each day that you participate rather than editing your existing post.
What’s New in Season 3?
Each season is a fresh start, with a brand new leaderboard and a new badge to earn. Nothing carries over from previous seasons, so everyone starts on equal footing once again. Participation in past seasons is not required to join for Season 3.
You asked for it - alt accounts are now allowed! Please declare your alt account when you first post in the thread. The rules have been updated to address what is or is not allowed when using an alt. This change complicates things on my end, perhaps in unexpected ways, so I ask for your patience as I may need to adjust guidelines as we proceed.
Bonus distractions return from Season 2, but have been reworked. They no longer grant distraction points, but instead give a new currency which can be spent in the new Reward Shop on Rewind Tokens and other helpful items - more on that in the following section. Participation in these new features is entirely optional; you may choose not to engage with them if that is your preference.
I’ve shaken up the distraction list once again for Season 3. Some new distraction types have been added, and some old distractions types have been altered, rebalanced, or removed. In response to feedback, I’ve adjusted the balancing toward a greater freedom of player choice, giving more options for many of the most restrictive distractions.
Bonus Distractions and Reward Shop
9 bonus distractions will take place over the course of the season. Each is active for a 10 day period starting on Day 1, Day 11, Day 21, and so on. Completing a bonus distraction awards a Bendy Buck (BB), for a maximum of 9 BBs available across the entire season. BBs can be spent on the following rewards:
Oopsie Daisy (1 BB) - If you have proof that you completed a distraction while it was active but forgot to post in the forum thread, you may redeem an Oopsie Daisy to earn the point for that day.
Late Pass (2 BBs) - Redeeming a Late Pass allows you to complete a distraction up to 24 hours after it has ended. You may spread your proof across the two days.
Rewind Token (3 BBs) - Rewind Tokens allow you to make up any past distraction that you missed. You still need to complete the distraction within a single day unless the wording of the distraction allows prior credit.
Free Point (4 BBs) - Redeem a Free Point to earn credit for any distraction, past or present, without having to actually complete it!
To use an item, simply state what you want to use in the same post as your proof, and I will deduct the appropriate amount of BBs. There is no inventory system and no need to purchase items in advance.
Timeline
This event will run for a period of 90 days, starting on the beginning December 1st, 2022 and concluding at the end of February 28th, 2023. There are 90 points possible.
The event is based on server time (UTC). An easy way to check the current server time is to look at the timestamp when you earn an achievement or post in the forums. I suggest familiarizing yourself with how many hours you need to add or subtract from your timezone. UTC is unaffected by Daylight Savings Time, but your timezone may be, so be careful.
Each distraction runs for 24 hours starting at 00:00. I strictly judge submissions based on timestamps, meaning an achievement earned at 00:00 is considered late. I try to update the leaderboard and post the upcoming distraction within the first few hours of a new day, but may sometimes fall behind schedule. The purpose of posting each distraction so far in advance is to allow players to continue participating at the beginning of a new day without having to wait for my manual updates.
Rewards
Following the conclusion of the event, a Softcore badge will be awarded to all participants who have earned at least 30 points. If you earn at least 60 points, you can trim the border and turn it into a Hardcore badge. There is no penalty for skipping days, so I encourage you to pick and choose the distractions that align most closely with your personal interests. You are allowed to opt out of receiving a badge if you wish.
For the more competitive players out there, each participant who earns a perfect score of 90 will have an achievement named after them on the event page, with the icon representing something they created during the season. All perfect scorers are considered equal regardless of BB usage.
Rules
Because this is such a complex event, I may need to add or modify rules as unforeseen situations come up.
1) Each day starts at 00:00 and ends at 23:59 UTC (server time). Distractions must be completed while they are considered “active” in order to receive credit. Late submissions are only allowed when using items from the Reward Shop.
2) Although distractions are posted one day in advance, this does not give you free reign to start early. All relevant achievements must be earned on the appropriate day unless explicitly stated otherwise.
3) All achievements must be earned in Hardcore Mode.
4) You must post in the forum in order to receive credit. I will not retroactively award points to participants who completed the distraction but failed to post when the distraction was active without the use of an Oopsie Daisy.
5) A few distraction types require me to make subjective judgment calls. As the event host, my ruling in these cases is final.
6) Resetting and re-earning achievements to complete distractions is allowed unless explicitly stated otherwise. Reusing the same achievement(s) or proof for more than one distraction per season, however, is not allowed.
7) In the event that you require a manual unlock in order to complete a distraction, please bring this to my attention. As long as the request is submitted before the end of the day, I will honor it even if it is granted late.
8) You may not “double count” the same proof for more than one distraction, even when using items from the Reward Shop. This restriction does not apply to bonus distractions.
9) In accordance with the Code of Conduct, you may not make use of save files or passwords that are not your own or were made under other conditions of play. For the purpose of this event, this includes using saves from one account to skip progression on another.
10) When using an alt, you may not spread your proof for a single distraction across two accounts. Swapping accounts for different distractions is fine. This restriction does not apply to bonus distractions.
Frequently Asked Questions
“I have a question, what’s the best way to contact you?”
For time-sensitive questions, you can either post in the #daily-distractions channel of the official RetroAchievements Discord or send me a private message here on the site. If you post a question here in the forum, I probably won’t see it until it’s too late. I try my best to address questions promptly, but I cannot be available at all hours.
“Is Discord required to participate in this event?”
No, but I recommend it. It’s an active community for discussing the event and sharing strategies with fellow participants.
“Why aren’t I on the leaderboard?”
If I haven’t added you to the leaderboard, it’s most likely because I can’t see your post. If your post says “unverified”, this is an automated anti-spam measure that needs to be manually overridden. If this happens to you, send me a private message and I will help you out.
“My score on the leaderboard is wrong, can you fix it?”
First, I recommend double checking when I last updated the leaderboard, as the discrepancy may be because I’ve fallen behind. I do make mistakes sometimes, though, so feel free to let me know if you think there is an error, and I can double-check things on my end.
“Does _____ count for this distraction?”
This is the most common question I receive, and I’m glad to answer these sorts of questions, particularly for the more open-ended distraction types. I like to reward creative thinking, so the answer will usually be “yes”. I may not always be around to answer you in time, though.
“I have a suggestion for the event, can I share it with you?”
Yes, please do! I’m always looking for feedback on how I can make the event better. Ideas for new distraction types are always appreciated. If you prefer to remain anonymous, I will distribute an anonymous survey at the end of the season.
“Which distractions have I missed?”
I don’t have a good way currently of making this information publicly available at all times without increasing my workload, but I can provide it upon request. Just let me know and I’ll pull the data for you.
