I will say, in my experience, I've had very few cases where bugs stopped me from badging a game. Bug I do find myself being more strategic when picking games to go for (looking for miss-ables that are marked, large achievements broken into smaller bits, etc...). Sadly just part of the landscape on RA.
Lastly, I don't have a lot of experience with the Bizhawk Retro Achievements add-on, but I'd maybe recommend using RetroArch (getting it setup is a pain, but it's amazing once it's up and running) or the RA emulator version specific to the console you're playing on to avoid issues with stuff not unlocking as they should. Not 100% sure issues can be 100% directly correlated to that, but something to try.
Good luck hunting!
I might be a bit more cautious about picking RPGs in the future, but I figured if I couldn't do Tactics, I didn't deserve to do any others! If the appeal goes through, I'll be much more open though.
I'd like to try RetroArch again, but I just wanted something more familiar that worked well with a mouse and keyboard. As you say, configuration was a massive pain - in particular, if there's a way to permanently change all button icons to SNES/PSX style instead of XBOX style, AND configure it so that SNES A/Circle is Accept and SNES B/Cross is Cancel, I would 100% use RetroArch. I just remember it being super inconsistent and not saving those settings across games. In the past I would use it for practicing speedruns and 1CCs for Sega Saturn games, where it is the best way to emulate with low latency. RetroArch would also implicitly map several button combinations on my controllers to do random emulator functions by default - last trip, I brought my Steam Deck on an airplane, did a Super Metroid run, and literally at the end of Tourian I accidentally pressed some button combination to reset the game. There is so much configuration overhead with RetroArch that it is just not good for someone like me. I'll work up the motivation to try it again, one day.
Thanks again for your help!
1. Move-Find Item, despite its description, isn’t random chance on any tile. There are 4 specific tiles per map you need to step on with the ability equipped. GameFAQs has a definitely usable ASCII map, but I prefer a visual one myself. I found this (https://www.cavesofnarshe.com/fft/walkthrough.php) to help more, just click a chapter, find the map you’re on.
2. The GameFAQs guide in the comments has some OTB (One Time Battle) maps. This achievement doesn’t count items on these maps, it’s just for the 18 you can revisit on the map.
3. There are 4 tiles per map, but every tile will only ever give up one item. Once you successfully find an item on that tile, it will never regenerate another. This means you can’t truly check off every single box on Zombietraine’s very useful checklist. Just be wary this achievement does know this. There’s 18 maps, 8 potential items each, only 4 you can pull. 18*4=the 72 you need.
4. That said, make sure you save before entering a map if there’s a rare item you want. Again, you accidentally find the common item on the tile, and that tile’s rare item is lost forever on that save. So make sure you save and load if you don’t pull the correct one. There’s an achievement in the set that requires you find the Vanish Mantle on Germinas Peak, which is a rare item, for example. That’s 100% missable.
5. Is there a way to help find rare items? Yes! The GameFAQs guide informs that units with lower Brave have better chance of finding the rare item. It seems to be (100-Brave#) for your percentage of picking up the rare, so use lower Brave units. The Mediator also has the Threaten skill which can lower any unit’s Brave by 20 to help. Just don’t lower it to 0, because they turn into a chicken and you lose control of them.
Hope all of this helps!
