I recommend setting a save before entering Cosmo Canyon for the first time (when the Buggy breaks down) and bring Barret to the party, once the party splits, go to the room behind the weapon shop and talk to him, select "Go on" and then, "Yeah, whatever...", then get out the room and go back in. The dialogue will reset and you can get as many affection points as you need with Barret. Each time you answer "Go on" his affection points go up by +3, so repeat this over and over to secure the date with Barret.

Done it in "28 lvl" run, 30 times repeating of dialogue is more then enough.
And BTW you can avoid crushing buggy just stop it before canion and walk there. It's mandatory for Fort Condor fights cheevo
