FYI, when the Zolom tail whips a character, it does it to the character who has dealt the most damage to him, if you're trying to learn Beta.

A trick to kind of cheesing it: It can be poisoned with Bio magic. It will still whip you away while you wait for the DoT to work, but the Bio doesn't trigger him using Beta.

I got the achievement but the Midgar Zolom didn't use Beta, sad.

Easy fight. Just takes a few tries, cause of ATB being stupid sometimes.Elemental materia on armor linked with fire. Use tranquilizers on your party, all in back row, have everyone but your enemy skill user cast attack spells. When he uses beta, quickly heal and cast beta twice for the kill. Level 16.

The easiest way to get the achievement is to use Barret's "Mindblow" to drain out all of his MPs. Without them he will not be able to use "Beta", and it will be an easy win!

What about getting it later? Anyway, I don't think at this stage of the game you can survive that attack. And I'm not sure that you can learn it if dying.

I think you can learn it if you die. A good way to mitigate the damage of Beta would be with a fire-elemental material combo. But its also MUCH easier to get the skill later on in the game when you'd have more health to just tank the attack

I found it easy enough to beat him at level 15 by keeping everyone in the back row defending, and then use Bio. With poison only damage, I found he did not whip me away or use Beta.

Got the achievement, reloaded a previous save and then crossed the marsh, so I can get Beta later on.

If you want to cross the marsh and you cant be bothered getting a chocobo, run across the marsh as straight as possible. When the zolom gets close, save the game and reset. When you load the game, the zolom will load to the other side of the marsh, and you can runs straight to the cave.

Could be worse, I followed basically what Tsane666 said; put Cloud (17) Tifa (16) and Barrett (16) in the back row, Cloud repeatedly used Bio (he got tail whipped out but it was fine), had Barrett use Mind Blow to prevent Beta, kept hitting it with spells (Tifa using Ice) and Barrett using the Mantra Enemy Skill, took 3 times to kill it. Saved just beforehand and reloaded so I can learn Beta later

Weird suggestion. Beat it for the cheevo. Reload your last save and duck it until you wanna learn Beta later?

Its been a decade, but the reason you want to learn beta here, is that there is a switch in a tunnel a few areas up, that spawn high level enemies. Beta kills them in one shot and it power levels you early. If you are exploiting this, its why you want to learn beta.

Also, I'm not sure why yall are restarting saves. That thing respawns. When I was a kid I had to get beta twice because I walked back into the fog thinking I killed the boss and it attacked me again. I'll verify over the next day or so.

Its easy. Barret with his limit 1 skill 2 skill make the snake killable because he can not cast beta. He respawns after death. To get beta, put everyone in back row. Fight him to phase 2. He kicks the person with highest damage out of fight (which means no game over. That person is on world map) he will cast beta one attack after kicking the person out of party. HEAL! I was lvl 17, and cast beta back after learning it, but if you die you get it too. If you hate the grind to 17 here be aware there are achivements for you skill materia to be working on ;-)
