    is this missable? I've lost the first encounter with him but now I've finished the game and it didn't unlock all the other times I've defeated him

    Yeah it's missable.. make sure you save after beating the Science Gym Leader cause Ronald will be waiting to challenge you in the lobby. Had to face Science guy twice since I didnt save.

    I say this because Ronald is not only cheap with switching out Pokmon seconds before you beat them but also the game likes to give you none of you vital cards necessary for victory. Be ready face good ol' Ronny boy over n over if you demand victory.

    Yes, there should be a missable mark on this. Also, please be aware that this will occur whenever you defeat your 2nd Gym Leader (which might be the Science one, but probably not). Once you defeat the 2nd leader, just save to diary before you leave the room you fought the leader in.

    I locked him down with Jigglypuff. He never switched out and I stuck him there till I was able to get Raichu and destroyed his whole team. This was with Water Medal as my second.

    A good start I found is to stall with lickitung (or Jigglypuff if you don't have enough copies) while you build a couple mons that can wipe his team

    I tend to beat eiher the Rock or Water trainers (depends on the starter deck I choose) a bunch for staple cards before going for medals, in part to make this fight easier. He can absolutely roll over you if he gets lucky with Charmeleon (doubly so if you are still using the fire weak Grass starter deck) but if you avoid being weak to fire, this fight isn't so bad. Still, I do recommend getting a few Bill or Prof Oak cards beforehand since a bad starting hand can easily screw you over.

    Oh yeah, saving in the room after getting your second medal obviously helps too. I haven't had to make use of it yet, but having a save takes off the edge considerably.
