I tried, but I can't seem to get them to fall, and the camera is AWFUL when going in circles with the shell!

Did you try all camera modes? Sometimes Mario mode is better than the Lakitu mode and sometimes it's the other case. Also you can change the second mode in the options to a camera lock so it locks on the position you pressed the button.

A really good tip for this. Get all the coins that disappear first, to be safe. Like all the coins from enemies for example. Also, when killing the invisible frogs, you must hit them from behind. Hitting it from the front will break your shell.

I actually did it. Turns out Mario camera mode (!!!pointing downwards!!!) and holding back while jumping to slow down are your best friends here. With that and keeping the other tips shown here in mind, it's not gonna be too difficult.

Took a few attempts. My tip is hop around like a mad Mario. It will slow you down to a crawl. Keep camera in the down position so you can see better. Set camera to lock and hold with 'R' when dealing with snowmen.

Once you get the shell, just jump a lot to slow yourself. Kill only that one flower enemy to fly over to get the shell.
