I feel like an Idiot, I was trying to do that one precise jump at the top of the mountain, when all you need to do is grab the wing cap and triple jump somwhere high

The star isn't the one for collecting the coins. It's just for the box star.

I spent hours long jumping off the mountain, only to realize the wing cap ISN'T a cannon, lmao. Bust the wing cap box past the bridge, near the circle of coins 1-up, then run up the mountain until you get to the bob-omb with the cannon.

It's actually possible to reach the island from the mountain top with a well-placed longjump

There's a koopa near the beginning of the stage right past the Wing Cap box. You can grab the Wing Cap, then ride the koopa shell up the mountain.
