I think you have to do hide and seek twice. The second being after you change back to human form. I accidentally used the code the second time around without doing the mini-game. The kid then gave me the notebook automatically. Whoops.

Played hide and seek, saved. Loaded next day, played hide and seek again and got the notebook. It did not trigger.

If you have same problem. Load game, pop baloon as deku and before talking to bomber learder turn to link and start playing. Catch last bombers as link and it will trigger.
