One trick here is that sometimes hitting a whirlpool is faster than trying to avoid them. My advice is to hug the middle wall at the beginning, hope for no barrels in the way, navigate through the whirlpools at the turn (this is the hardest part really), and then hug the middle wall on the way back -- most likely you'll just hit one whirlpool that will actually help blast you past the last two. At least that's how it happened for me.
