I have done this multiple times and haven't gotten the cheev. I tried it using savestates DURING the minigame to make it quick and easy and I also tried to save state before entering the minigame and kept retry from world map until I got it perfect.

Anyone know exactly how this has to be done in order to get the cheev cuz I've tried everything.... :(

Try with the super Mario Bros 3 USA ROM. Worked for me.
