Tested and checked the setup and the answer seems to be five. However, you also need to be at least rank 19. I'd be careful with savestates going for this, it seems to prevent this from popping when it should.

Tip for the misinformed; You need to die 3 times to make your rank start at rank 50, and then the achievement will work after popping 5 bubbles.

Any idea if this only pops with a certain checksum? I've gotten all the others except this one and have even tried following the advice here with dropping rank to 50.

Was able to get it using the J ROM (one of the supported checksums)

I changed the code so starting at rank 47, 48 or 49 is acceptable too. I also changed the description from "Pop several bubbles" to "Pop 5 bubbles".
