OK, I give up, how is this done? I finally managed to hit the falling beetle in 6-2 from below with big mario, and it just damaged me.

1-1 2nd playthrough is the best way to get this one, so if you fail you can die and if you game over you still can retry since you stay on 2nd quest

1-1 second quest to do it. walk until you reach the place with a mushroom block and 2 beetles. hit the mushroom block when the second one is falling, and then jump under it when it's in the air

Note that hitboxes work weird in this game. Mario doesn't necessarily have to be falling on top of an enemy to defeat it, He just needs to be falling when you touch the enemy, meaning you can hit them from above assuming you line it up right.
