Incredibly annoying for one reason alone, they despawn. Try to keep them centralized to one spot, if not you will have to reattempt only because of them flying off screen.

I lowered the requirement to 3 bats and you can respawn already killed bats and kill them again. I also updated this so it is possible every life - for some reason in the initial release I had it only possible once per continue which was a bad implementation. That is corrected now.

The most reliable strategy here is respawning the second bat, when fighting it don't ever attack unless it's moving otherwise you'll be charged. There's a rhythm of letting it shoot a fireball, then you attack it and the fireball at the same time too. Use the axe when you can because that usually doesn't aggro the bat, though I never did find out exactly how its AI functions.

Side note, the achievement name should be changed from "Quinque Mortui Vespertiliones" to "Tria Mortui Vespertiliones" to be theme appropriate.

I was trying to figure out why the counter would show 5 bats killed and it wouldn't trigger the achievement, retried a half dozen times but now I see it was changed while I had a game in progress! I was so confused haha

Surprisingly easy! Run to the end of the bridge like normal, grabbing the stopwatch along the way. Then work your way backwards and use your 3 shots of time stop on the bats while luring them to safe and solid ground.

Not that hard. Bring the holy water from the battle with death. Despawn or run from the first bat. Kill the second bat using 2 holy waters + whip. Important to freeze it with holy water as soon as it is in ground level. Whip it to kill it faster. Get the stopwatch, use it once and kill the third bat. Jump over the fourth bat, get going to the left, whip the last bat once and go straight to get the big heart in the last candle. Use the stopwatch to kill the last bat.
If you die, it will be a little harder without the holy water. You will be in shortage of hearts, but using the stopwatch you can kill the third and the last bats easily.

VERY annoying if you were in my situation and had to use continues at this point. Start out by taking out the Bat at the beginning, then go to the end to get the hearts to use the Stopwatch and kill the remaining two.

Sharing this strategy that doesn't rely on items from previous stages:
assuming you failed, acquire the short whip from the chandelier and make an effort to kill the first bat with it. Since your check point is infinite, fight recklessly and aggressively, with a few tries you will have a good fight.

Run and avoid the second bat, do a "back and forth" on the platform with the clock and with a little luck you can make this third bat disappear, then take the clock and kill the last two bats, this is relatively easy.

Remember that you cannot use hearts on the first bat due to its limited supply, and to kill the last bat, you must get the big heart at the end of the hallway.

The most critical moments of this strategy are: killing the first bat with a short whip, running away from the second bat and making the third bat disappear. But since you have a checkpoint on the door to this area, it takes a lot of the pain out of this challenge.

Last comment is the best way if you don't have holy water.
