Knuckles story is much more interesting and fun after the disappointing Tails chapter. Since Knuckles encounters Sonic only twice in the story, there's almost an entirely different plot here than in Tails story. Knuckles gets an exclusive boss in the form of Chaos 2, a form we briefly see in Sonic's and Tails story before Chaos turns into Chaos 4. He's pretty tough if you don't figure out the strats to easily hurt him. We also get three entire flashback sequences that further shows off the Echidna girl in action and gives more history of Angel Island.

The main draw however, is the gameplay here. Knuckles is more unique because you have to search over an area of a level to find three Emerald Shards like a scavenger hunt. This works much better in these levels than Tail's racing. Knuckles even gets to explore new areas in these levels due to his gliding and climbing mechanics. The A rank missions may seem hard, but you can get around that by finding all three shards first, then dying or resetting to bring down the time and find them.

Overall, a very enjoyable experience.
