Got this on my second try, only to find out that a ton of people hate this one. Guess smoke RNG was VERY kind to me, and I didn't use any sort of speedrun trick, but I can see how RNG could make this extremely frustrating.

Even though I did it in so few tries, I agree stuff like this should be saved for subsets.

Literally 2 minutes reset time to try a 20 seconds course. Ohhhh, I love these sets.

I'm surprised to look back on this and see so many complaints about difficulty or questioning implementing this in the core set when this is borderlining on easy. I mean it's <20 seconds of super basic navigation besides 1 wall jump (not required), no Dboosts or good RNG required, and actual speedruns have 6 seconds to spare, without doing anything too fancy, which is so much room for error considering it's just a few small rooms. If you're new, practice with savestates then reset for HC, it's the literal first thing in the game. If anything, all of this feedback and these considerations only reinforce 40 seconds being a great cutoff.

Brian, sir, the last thing we needed was another show-off telling us a frustrating cheevo is actually really easy. And I mastered the set, exactly like I mastered the SH2 set with the beautiful, patented, cutting-edge drifting-inucing boat cheevo. Can I really say it was easy because I "eventually" got it? No.
    blood 17 Feb 2025 21:52
I agree with hotarubi. Speedrunning achievements are polemic and can be massively frustrating for people who don't like them. The dev coming here and adding to the frustration exposes the kind of tone-deaf behavior that is often seen in this community. A 6 second tolerance from an actual speedrunning strategy is NOT a lot of wiggling room. A 10% unlock rate for a community of people who go out of their way just to get achievements is also a low number.

Don't get me wrong. I love doing speedrunning cheevos. Specifically, I love cheevos that teach me, why not, in a harsh manner, how to hone my skills beyond what is normally required for a simple completion, e.g. SH 10-Star and GoW NUR+ runs. What I don't like is replaying the same short segment over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, each time with an overhead exceeding entire minutes, that relies on my controller feeding precise non-diagonal inputs when performing a wall-jump to avoid exiting a spin. I had to go to the hospital when I finally got Professional Escape because i felt so bad I was about to pass away for good from the amount of stress that cheevo put me through.
    hotarubi 17 Feb 2025 22:04
Btw, Speedrunners achieve that "6-seconds-long room for error" with precise arm-pumping, ledge-grabbing, wall-jumping while out of the camera and damage boosts. Not to be the "Ehm actually guy" but you should really watch some Zoast, Behemoth, Oats, Zeny, etc. You have no idea what you are talking about. Salutations, sir.
    Brian 17 Feb 2025 22:06
I'm being as unbiased and fair as I can be, no showing off needed whatsoever. There's nearly 7 seconds allowed for error in a 20-second achievement that isn't requiring you to do any fancy tricks, though obviously it helps to learn one or two. 34% of the cutoff's run duration is allocated room for error--how is this not generous? 2000 unlocks btw
    hotarubi 17 Feb 2025 22:13
You are making it sound as if you'd have to TRY getting a time higher than 20 seconds. As if you could just "execute buttons normally" and get the cheevo without even looking at the screen. Almost a "progression cheevo". "Like, dude, you MUST have gotten a time under 20 seconds." I am telling you. It is NOT easy. See what I did? I upper-cased the boolean operator NOT.
    Totalaerus 17 Feb 2025 22:42
Why do you want to ruin a good achievement set, Brian? Just put this in a subset. Do you hate this game or something? It's disgusting.
    Totalaerus 17 Feb 2025 22:47
I want to add, that this is completely against RA'a philosophy. This isn't an achievement in the game or for someone to brag about doing "back in the day." No one I know ever bragged about doing this. This is just you insisting we do this. Nothing happens in the game if you do this. You made this challenge up and that's why people resent it.
    hotarubi 17 Feb 2025 23:06
Woah, Totalaerus, chill my dudz. I am not against hard challenges. At all. On the contrary, the idea that only a select few individuals managed to get the mastery through sheer dedication should be the basis for any "platinum". If a set is done with proper care and you can't get the mastery, chances are you do not deserve it. What I am against is unreasonable, frame-perfect, mental-illness-inducing, outright bad challenges that are not fun to grind/learn while unsatisfactory in pulling-off. Want a concrete example? Have a look at the Liberty City Stories PSP set. They deliberately chose to make some of the odd jobs even worse by increasing the target number to reach. It was already not fun to begin with, but after the set logic? Pure torture.
    Brian 17 Feb 2025 23:42
The gatekeeping attempts & claiming I have no idea what I'm talking about is ironic on so many levels it's become funny, and not worth my time acknowledging beyond this. You could probably even find Twitch messages of mine during like 8 different SM records, and you can see for yourself I was clearly engaged with that community when I made & mastered this set in 2013. There isn't even a sliver of doubt in my mind that this achievement belongs in the core set and is very attainable for the average player--there is nothing inconsiderate about its design, balance, or presence, nor should it waste anybody's time as it's the first thing in the game where you can easily practice those 3 terrifying tutorial rooms with savestates. You can retry at any time on any new file. Professional Escape is in a similar boat and allows nearly identical room-for-error. You guys repeatedly refer to these speedrunning strats as if they're ancient forbidden tech requiring hours of practice, when in reality it's just a couple simple tricks you can learn quickly, and they only save a few seconds, which is why this achievement is possible without ANY of them. You complain about "showing off" there, but the only person who actually tried to was you in your bout of insecurity, and let me reassure you it had the opposite effect. Lastly, to say this achievement ruins the set, or even comes anywhere close, then to further claim it goes against RA's philosophy, is absurdly out of touch and couldn't be further from the truth. These complaints are in bad faith and y'all really just need to do better. Nothing quite says "gratifying achievement hunting" like wanting everything to be an uninspired participation award you don't have to earn. I will not continue interacting with this nonsense.
    Tdiggity13 18 Feb 2025 02:10
I saw all of the inbox messages about this and came back to see: A) if I had gotten the achievement myself, and B) what my own comment on this topic was (Spoiler, it was: "YIKES, this was tough!"). I have to say that, while this is certainly a challenging run, the fact that it happens at the start of the game makes it infinitely retry-able. Use that to your advantage when going for it - give it a couple shots before loading your save, then continue your game as normal if you don't get it. Can vouch for Brian's comment that complex speed run tech is not required, and you really only need like 20 seconds of sequential GREAT gaming to pull this off - and it's a great feeling when you do! I think all of these elements make it a perfectly fair inclusion in the main set.
    hotarubi 18 Feb 2025 07:27
Brian, can you explain me how guilt tripping me and insinuating I'm an insecure person helps your cause? I am indeed insecure and very anxious, but I'm also determined and love to delve deep into a subject to grasp it better. I repeat: I did the thing. Both Quick and Professional Escape. I mastered the set. But I also have a mind of my own and formed an idea regarding those cheevos. The idea being they are unfun. You co-wrote the set? What does that have to do with anything? I treated you as if you were any other human being and explained you my perspective on the matter at hand. I stand my ground: Quick and Professional Escape are some of the most frustrating cheevos I've had the displeasure of getting in Hardcore (I do not play in Softcore). As I've told you already (read above), I AGREE with you regarding what a "master" should be, not an uninspiring participatory trophy but rather an award proving you put in the time. Still, the fact remains that both Quick and Professional Escape are frustrating to learn and psychosis-inducing for the D-PAD precision required. I had to unbind D-PAD UP in RetroArch because I BROKE my 8BitDo controller when practicing Professional Escape: Samus would always exit out a spin whenever pressing D-PAD RIGHT slightly upward. There are hard cheevos you have fun learning, and then there are Quick and Professional Escape.

I got this Achievement but I totally agree with everyone that finds it frustrating and too difficult.
Should honestly be changed to either 35 seconds. That smoke is just way too frustrating to deal with
    SenhorMinuMaster 3 Mar 2025 03:17
My email suddenly started bombarding me with notifications of this achievement. I went to see it now and realized that I'm a total amateur when it comes to retro game achievements... I didn't understand half the terms they used, lol.
    ExistentialCrisis 6 Mar 2025 07:08
I did this on my second try, did not realize it was supposed to be hard.
    mnmnstrd 12 Mar 2025 14:39
Shout out to those who got this one on hardcore mode, I definitely would not have gotten this one without being able to load my state right away after missing it by half a second.
