To get it: At the start of pirate panic, avoid all bananas, Go to the 1up room near the start, and exit without touching anthing, then go and grap the banana bunch near the 4 barrels with the crocodile, then to back to the room, touch the k rool message and get the 1up, then exit and collect the same banana bunch again, coming back to the room afterwards where a bonus coin will spawn, giving you 75 coins.

It just gets you the coins. Convenient if you want to complete the Lost World before defeating K. Rool.

Interesting Easter Egg. I saw this on the achievements list and was thinking if you need to play the level 38 times but there was no tracking so thought that can't be it.

Is there any reference to this in the game or the manual?

I doubt there was any reference to this in the manual or in game. This is like a next level cheat code. It goes beyond entering specific inputs on the start menu. And if you wanted cheat codes back in the 90s you had to pay for guides or game genies.
