I found that the easiest way to get this one was to breed the gift eevee and evolve it into umbreon so it learns pursuit at 16 and can carry you from there

The Umbreon strat was very good. I managed to beat this with just a Level 23 Umbreon and 3 Gastly's which I just sacrificed in order to heal umbreon.

I had a team of Lv25 Haunters and Gastly's (3 Each) I bought a Carbos and put that on my Haunter. I then used X Attack and X Speed on the 1st Haunter in my party, whilst I was using these items my Haunter was obviously being damaged, so once I had used both the "X Items" I switched out for a Gastly and then healed up my Haunter with a Super Potion.. Now I defeated Morty's Gastly and Haunter by sacraficing one or two of my Gastly's.

Now I'd purposely let his Gengar defeat my Gastly just so I could switch back in my original Haunter (The one with all the buffed up stats) My Haunter now gets to attack first.. Choose Hypnosis! This is VERY important because if you don't sleep his Gengar he will constantly one hit kill you with his "Shadow Ball" Make sure to sleep his Gengar and then go to town on him with "Night Shade" defeat him and use the same tactic on Morty's last Haunter.. Put him to sleep with "Hypnosis" and finish him off. If Hypnosis doesn't work restart and try again until the move does land!

Another thing I want to mention.. If you want to level up your Gastly as quickly as possible... Put Gastly No1 in your party and then have a decent 2nd Pokemon who can defeat Morty's Ghost Pokemon.. I used Feraligatr due to Surf/Bite.. Basically you want to keep switching out your Gastly during the battle but it's IMPORTANT TO LOSE on purpose.. You get a crazy amount of EXP by defeating his Gastly, Haunter and Gengar.. But once it comes to his final Haunter.. Purposely use a move that doesn't have any effect.. I was using Scratch/Slash/Mean Look.. You need to do this so that Haunter defeats you and you "Black Out" then you can keep repeating this tactic to level up quickly.. Make sure to spend all your money first in the item shop though because blacking out makes you lose your money. Also once you reach Lv24 with your Gastly.. Battle elsewhere because if you Lv up to 25 and you black out, he won't evolve into a Haunter.. He needs to win the battle to evolve.

Yeah this was a tad annoying, i had 2 level 23 ghastly and 1 25 haunter, i put the first ghastly to sleep x speeding all my poke then managed to put the gengar to sleep + curse him

did this with a lvl 24 Umbreon, lvl 17 gastly, two lvl 3 gastlys and a lvl 4 gastly. My umbreon didnt know pursuit so I used tm for mud-slap. Used Umbreon in all the battles until I ran out of PP for mud-slap then had to keep reviving my lvl 17 Gastly until he could land a cruse attack and drain gengar out. wasnt pretty but it worked.

I beat Morty with 2 lvl 24 Ghastlys and a lvl 25 Haunter. Put the first Ghastly to sleep and took it out with two Night Shades. Then send his Haunter to sleep and use an X speed in preparation for his Gengar. Three Licks later and out comes his ace, which I sacrificed Ghastly 1 with Curse. Then send out Haunter, put it sleep, use Nightmare to stack damage in conjunction with Curse, and knock it out with Night Shade. Lastly for his second Haunter, use Hypnosis, Nightmare, switch to Ghastly 2 so that my Haunter doesn't gain too much EXP, and then finish him with Night Shade

Took a few tries for this strat to work, but I pulled it through

Umbreon is definitely the way to go here, it can eat Gengar's shadow balls for breakfast.

Three level 25 Haunters can clear this with no unusual tactics. As long as you alternate them correctly none of them will level up. You'll have to roll the dice on Gengar with Hypnosis though.

@The1upBlock, I caught a shiny Oddish while grinding levels for my Eevee, so twinsies. Really surprised I even noticed with the 10x speed going.

Glad I went in with Gastly freshly at level 24. Finished with 45 exp toward lv 26.

Just start with Hypnosis. If fail, reset. Then set up with X Accuracy, X Speed and maybe 3 X Defend, for Shadow Ball defense. Pray you don't get Cursed from the first Gastly. Then just Night Shade him. Proceed to Hypnosis his next mons, Night Shade. Optionally hold a Gold Berry. Optionally use Curse against Gengar after putting him to sleep, then heal after in case he wakes up.
