These are specific type only challenges... I did this with Spearow, Pidgey and Hoothoot.

Make sure you set your game mode to set. It's in the options.

I'm using retroarch – is there way to enable "set mode" there? I see no option that seems to correspond to that…

Thanks for the pointers. For those struggling like me, the actual option is called "Battle Mode"; defaults to "Shift", can be switched to "Set". TIL that is a thing 

All of these achievements for doing gym leaders with specific teams should probably be labeled as missable, unless there's a rematch function I'm not aware of.

Wanted to self impose same # of Pokemon rule (2 in this case) only restriction for these like you would see in Nuzlockes.

Zubat is not great here as it doesn't learn anything other than Leech Life and Supersonic by level 9. Hoothoot is also pretty weak at this point. I opted to use Spearow and Pidgey. Spearow did most of the work with an attack stack that is actually the same as Pidgeotto.

I win this using only one Pidgey LV 8 holding a berry and using 4 potions.

I did the achievement, with zubat level 7 and Hoothoot level 8, I used 1x seed , and 1x attack, and 1x defense it was very easy I didn't even take another flying pokemon because it's at night

I did it with a Lv9 Pidgey only. Gusted first Pidgey to death, Sand-attacked Pidgeotto a couple of times, then Gusted all the way to victory (had to use a couple Potions though). Not very hard.

A good strat is to use HootHoot here and then level it to 20 for the fight vs Whitney

A melhor forma que eu fiz foi com um pidgey e um Spearow, contra o pidgey do Falkner use o peck do Spearow e quando entrar o Pidgeotto, troque para o seu pidgey e der o máximo possível de sand-attacks, depois vá batendo com guts e peck (lembre-se de equipar uma berry em ambos)
