You can equip the Iron GWhip on Bart and still get this. I didn't know that didn't count as an upgrade. Hopefully this makes those trying this less insane.

A few things that helped me with this one: gear 'ether machine' power is determined by the character's ether stat, not the gear stats (unlike physical attacks). If Fei's ether stat is high, guided shot does decent damage (mine was ether 20, but high teens is probably enough). Grind and save when Fei gets a +1 to ether at lvl up. Bart can unlock beat serpent (stronger than chain whip) by learning twin sonic outside his gear. Booster essential. Wild Smile only needs to be cast once and lasts for the duration of the battle, cutting enemy accuracy 50% (but Calamity's missile attack will always hit).

Thanks for the pro tips alundra82. I had geared up and learned the new deathblow with Bart, but did not know for sure whether Wild Smile lasted for the whole battle. Ether is definitely the way to farm / reset if your level-up does not give an Ether point. I think at level 18 or 19 Bart will also get an Ether-based attack which could be useful, but his weapon upgrade + deathblows worked well enough for me (note however that using Ether attacks does NOT deplete fuel unlike regular attack / deathblow, which makes the Booster much more attractive).

Yes - the gear shop tune up option just restores gear HP and shouldn't lock you out of the achievement. I'm sure I used it after grinding in the stalactite cave, and I don't remember it causing a problem for me.

I should clarify that because the gear shop has a number of options. You can't upgrade any of the following things (the dev listed these on p3 of the forum): "Gear engines, frames, armor, accessories and in some cases weapons are what the achievement looks for" (but as mentioned above, Iron GWhip on Bart is ok). Refuelling the gear was fine for me.

I need to issue out a warning for those playing the undub patch: For some reason when I tried fighting Calamity he had unlimited HP. I would count the damage off and he wouldn't die. The second I tried a non-patched rom with English voice acting I had no problem getting the achievement.

As for the actual achievement: Just copy what alundra82 said, I can't imagine doing this without at least 20 ether and spamming guided shot. Bart should be your backup who goes to town with level 1 combos while using rosesols on Weltall (you'll need one toward the end). Booster is mandatory for both characters.

If you initiate the fight with wild smile then it ultimately comes down to rng. I was over leveled for this fight but I don't think it made a huge difference.
