I had set mode on, i only had 5 pokemon in my team, i was using charmander at lv12 with ember, and thanks to geoudu that mostly used curly defense and onix using screen and bide (plus my metapod who i used him to receive one of the bide attacks), i managed to unlock it.

The level limits are way too low early on... and not because it makes the fight hard, but because you have to go out of your way to stay under 14, not to mention the few next of those achievements... Also the achievement just didn't work, apparently you need a party of 6? Why isn't that mentioned? Wasting my time with these dumb arbitrary requirements

Pretty simple to accomplish this achievement. Simply go to options and put it in set mode. Make sure no Pokémon is over the level cap (simply have a full party of pokemon 2 levels under the cap). And make sure all cheats are disabled. Then go into the gym. Choosing bulbasaur makes the first two gyms easy.

Playing Red. Went into the forest with a lvl 13 charmander, lvl 9 nidoran male & pidgey, lvl 8 metapod, lvl 3 weedle & lvl 4 rattata, last two just to have after discovering I need a party of 6, should probably specify that on the first of these achievements at least. Made it through all the trainer battles starting with pod and swapping to pidgey for easy xp share. The antidote pickup came in handy. Also bumped into a pikachu I used my weedle and rattata to wear down & catch. Pidgey made it to lvl 11. Proceeded to beat Brock with this team and got my cheevo. Sand attack + leer combo was a huge play. Looking forward to the rest of this set

The best strategy to defeat Brock is to capture a caterpie and evolve it into an Butterfree and just use the Confusion ability.

Playing Blue, this did not pop. First time I played, Bulba leveled to 15 during the fight. I'm in agreement with other comments that this level cap is too low, because one major way of playing (esp Gen1) is to have one powerhouse.

I still went out of my way for over an hour to level my other team members to handle the fight, with Bulba at 14. I completed the battle with Bulba still level 14. I had to use him but switched other pokemon to reduce exp gain.

I did not get the chevo with him at 14. The comment saying it works with leveling 15 may be a difference of Blue vs Red. Again, I'm on blue.

Not sure how, but with Bulbasaur as the only pokemon on my team at level 14 on start, I leveled up twice during the Brock fight and evolved right after, still got the achievement. (Playing on Red)

the cap is absolutely fine, i had to grind to 13 to beat Gary, got to 14 in the forest, then started the fight vs Brock, finished at level 15, and it popped

Do you need a full team of 6 to get this or can I just have 1? Also if you need 6 are doubles ok (ie: 1 starter and 5 weedles)?

Nowhere does it mention party size requirements, any amount is fine as long as you're on set mode and under the level limit when you start the battle

Merri, the rule is not in your team.
Sometimes these are programmed that you can even have it in your team, but not take a turn.

For if your pokemon levels, these chevos usually do the level check before you start the fight, in case that happens. Your team must just be under the level cap when entering.

RetroArch w/mGBA, Pokemon Blue.

Had a full team of 6, saved prior to entering the gym. Most of my team was level 12.

Completed first try with just Butterfree. I swept Brock's Geodude and Onyx just by using Confusion and luckily Brock's Onyx used Screech 4 times in a row, by the 4th Screech my Butterfree defeated it.

I also skipped the first trainer inside the gym, and I got both this achievement and the other non-Set Mode achievement.

I won with a level 10 Squirtle but the achievement didn't pop. Also beat Misty with a level 19 Pikachu and same problem.
