Seems like 87 conditions already break the emulator when I try to upload the bestiary achievements (that's the amount in W2, which is the least of the 3 main groups).

I think I'll have to split them in 3 parts for each world (bonus dungeon is "to short" to need splitting). The first two should have the enemies (bestiary entry < 243) while the last one contains the bosses only (entry >= 243).

I could simply split the achievement equally but I think I might do it by separating enemies by regions if possible.

I guess I can promote the rest of the achievements to core as there's no issue with the bestiary one because you can check it at any time...

Finally this set is complete!

For reference, this is how the bestiary is stored, is pretty similar to how enemies are stored in ROM, with the exception that bosses are moved after enemies (in there you start with Wingraptor)

After I complete the extra dungeon I'm thinking on working to add leaderboards for this game.

I was thinking one for fastest completion (speedrun) and another one for a low level (most likely by adding the experience of each character and not the sum of levels so it can vary more).

Any other idea for a leaderboard is welcomed (I would likely reject maxed leaderboards, like most experience or max gold though). Maybe how fast you can reach world 2 & 3 could be one?!

Fastest to a full Blue set?
Fastest to max pianos? Probably redundant with world 2/3.
Fastest to kill Omega and/or Shinryu? Edit: whoops, Advance version. The "Neo" versions then.

Mmm when you say the fastest, you mean like a speedrun to fulfill the conditions (as in time from start until you reach the goal)? Because those goals can only be completed until you reach world 3, so it's kinda fixed when you fulfill them.

Out of all the magic types, Blue Magic & maybe Summon sound like the most interesting ones; but if I manage to get one leaderboard up, I could manage to get them all (even Dark Arts, which would be the longest one due to the nature of needing to complete the extra dungeon before even getting the job).

There's nothing (AFAIK) that tracks turns on the game, so I'd assume that's not what you meant by fastest to kill X boss. Also, the variable that keeps the in-game timer freezes until you end the battle. If the tools were more sophisticated, you could do a subtraction and figure out how long it took you, but that's currently impossible.

why not add some achievements based on the fiesta instead of going full ham with speedrunning?

here's some possibly soul torturing ones:

"Beat the game with 2 berserkers in your end game party"

"Beat liquid flame with 4 monks in your party"

"Escape karnak castle with 4 white mages"

"Defeat Omniscient with melee attacks only"

"Defeat the gil turtle" <--- the only true achievement of this game.
or alternatively...
"Get to the end of the money trail in Gil Turtle's Lair"

"Deal 9999 damage in a single hit"

"Block 10 incoming attacks in a row"

"Trigger all of the Childhood Cutscenes"

"Beat the game with only wind jobs"
"Beat the game with only water jobs"
"Beat the game with only fire jobs"
"Beat the game with only earth jobs"

"KILL necrophobe" (yes it is possible, though I also don't recommend it as an achievement)

FF5 has a lot of options of what to do rather than just "speedrun"

Mmm, the problem with the "use this settings to kill this boss" is that it limits the gameplay a lot as it forces you to go with that setup & you would likely have to grind. (Well mastering a job requires grinding, but those achievements are kind of mandatory to have...)

The problem with the Gil Turtle is that this is the US version and you can use the quick-save feature to skip all encounters and reach the end of the cave (I even abused that to get some cash in my current game).

If you want to get the "Kill all bosses in world 2" achievement (), you must fight Gil Turtle; so fighting every enemy/boss has their achievement that way (hence why I didn't do it like the SNES where most boss battles had their own achievement).

Dealing 9999 in a single blow has no merit, even with a true level 1 character you can do that with the Finisher ability. (I say true lv 1 because you could level up inside the battle via song or mix and reach higher levels and deal more damage that way...)

You make it sound like killing necrophobe was hard, but it isn't at all. If you didn't got the Excalipoor you must kill him as Gilgamesh won't appear. If you fulfilled that condition is still easy, all you have to do is keep track of his HP and deal the last +10,000 damage in a single turn (e.g. using X-Fight or Dual Cast/Quick) or just use Lv 5 Doom...

Beating the game with X jobs sounds mildly ok. Problem is you can only track the last part and not the whole run, so you can cheat by getting other abilities and equipping them. You may simply track the ABP for each Job, but doing it for all characters is just too many conditions for the emulator to handle.

I could had added more achievements for exclusive steals but felt that going for a rare steal item relies too much on luck, specially if the enemy also has a common one (like Gogo). That's why I only went with Gilgamesh's Genji equipment. (The last 2 are still doable if you can equip the Thief Knife and not depend on the Thief job)

The only ones I could agree to have (as I said when I resumed adding achievements) are some of the cutscenes. I tried to focus the achievements to be on the completion part and focus more on the extra content, so is very possible to miss many achievements due to 1 or 2 conditions not met. By having more easy ones, people can be happy that they got some achievements, only problem is that I would need to balance all the achievements to keep the difficulty of them balanced... (I could get rid of the since is already covered in parts already, though I wanted that one for obvious reasons - 100% treasure collected in a single run)

I though of another leaderboard to add (albeit it's on the max-able side), either beat the game with the least amount of times escaped or least times saved. Unfortunately I'm positive you could play in "not hardcore" and use save states and use the quick-save to switch to "hardcore" in the end, so maybe is not a good idea after all...

There's nothing (AFAIK) that tracks turns on the game, so I'd assume that's not what you meant by fastest to kill X boss.

I vaguely had system clock in mind, though I'm not sure how exploitable it is (e.g. like FF IV's is). No one's doing X hard boss in a single segment, so all the things associated with multi-segment speedrunning would implicitly be fine.

Also, the variable that keeps the in-game timer freezes until you end the battle.

Just as long as it's consistent and not unduly exploitable via unpleasant mechanics, it probably doesn't matter. The leaderboard would claim in-game time with all the caveats thereof. I guess it'd help if players were made aware of this condition and any others that affect timing.

Pie in the sky, of course, but it would have been nice had Nintendo included a RTC on the console or Square had on the cartridges.

There are only 2 battles where you can lose and still proceed with the story: when you reach Galuf's world and fight the Abductor and when Galuf fights solo against Exdeath. On those cases, when you end the battle, it won't matter how long it took you to lose, the timer will remain the same as when you entered the battle.

As for battle rounds, while you could keep track of everyone's ATB, there is a glitch (although I don't remember if it remained in the GBA or not) where you can inflict HP Leak on the first attack when you use Quick and don't use the second one. Due to a bug, the leak will remain affecting the enemy (or you) and won't run out as your turn is halted. You can also use this on your advantage with regen too.

As for a real timer, I don't really know if any old game have one. I mean, some games have counters that advance every cycle (frame) but usually are of the size of 1 Byte, so they are not useful to make a clock out of it (it may be feasible with some work to make one out of it, but how many players would finish the run on a single play...)

Whelkman
Posted: 06 Jan, 2016 19:31
Realistically, accurate timing would be up to the Retro Achievements API. It'd have to keep track of cumulative sessions played since a declared reset. Not console reset but API level reset. Obviously something would have to be done to prevent the case of a player starting a new game and then loading an old save. Probably a SRAM wipe plus checksumming at regular intervals.

Made a change to the Low Level Game challenge . Now you are required a sub 20 level (for each character) in order to be able to trigger it (before it was a single digit, sub 10). It should still be challenging, but not that bad as it was, speedruns usually have their levels around 14-16...

Not sure why/how mastering jobs achievements trigger and tried everything I could think of: Deleting cloning achievements, remove save files, etc.

Achievements like check in which screen you are, which is when you are playing, then alts for each character's job level (Both check for the exact number, so there is no chance for errors like addresses getting set to FF and triggering the achievement).

I can only think that either the alts are doing something funky or that addresses get carried when you had played a game before, otherwise more people would be having the same issue of triggering such achievements...

Judging by your log, it would seem you tried playing the Europe version, but only the US version has achievements (which also by the look, seems you were able to finally load them).
