Well Kevin, I've been using the RAPJ64 emulator found in this forum:

http://retroachievements.org/viewtopic.php?t=4686

And the process of creating cheevs from there is identical to the one used for any other RA emulator I've used... I don't know how that would work for RetroArch though, never used that myself.

As for a "developer mode"... no, there is no such thing (good thing too, since that would probably require credentials and thus kept me from coding a few sets). Not that the lack of such could be used to cheat a legitimately coded cheev anyway, since it only starts tracking your game once you've promoted it to Core.

Well, as I mentioned, one of the games I'd like to look into is Mother 1+2 for GBA. There's a translation for Mother 1 out that is supposed to be quite a bit better than the one for unreleased 'Earthbound Zero', plus some QoL improvements. I think it would be very handy to be able to use cheat engine on the original game and see if it helped me make any sense of the port, but I would guess that even attaching CE to the emulator is a red flag. I haven't tried, myself. I'd just like a way to freely 'cheat' locally without risk of accidentally flagging either achievements or anti-cheat measures on the server side.

You mean like seeing if Action A that produced Event B in the memory of the original would produce the same Event B in the new version's memory? That probably wouldn't have a direct relation like you're hoping (since the system is different), but I SUPPOSE you could do what I did for SM74 and copy the base game's development notes from the Memory Inspector into a local text file, and then perform some actions to see if those are still the case in the new version... though that kind of assumes the original developer LEFT detailed notes.

As for using an ACTUAL cheat engine... I think the closest thing possible would be downloading a finished save or something. Or perhaps using savestates outside of Hardcore mode.

KevinCarbonara, you can't do achievement development through retroarch. You need to use the tools provided available in the retroachievements emulators. http://retroachievements.org/download.php

For n64 use: http://retroachievements.org/viewtopic.php?t=4686

There isn't a dev mode, (though that would be nice), but if you're making changes to the memory you won't be able to earn achievements.

If you have any questions ask in chat or on discord.

Is the process different on another emulator? (RAVBA, per example)

No. the toolkit is the same on each emulator.
